At least Scarlett Johansson will be appearing - as Major Motoko Kusanagi - in a live-action version of "Ghost in the Shell": and with Masamune Shirow's full blessing (along with his for this Western adaptation of his groundbreaking cyberpunk manga/anime scenario; he's one of the writers of this new film version, natch).
When you're reduced to 're-imaginings' of previous films ("Total Recall", "Fant4stic" etc), and Stan Lee went to 'BONES' in Japan for making his "Heroman" scenario, then I suspect that's all you have left, Hollywood.
If you're now reduced to making films with women main stars - not a bad thing in itself; the whole 'Re-imagining' thing is though - then do what messrs. Lee, Cameron (who owns the live-action rights to "Battle Angel Alita") & Sanders ("GitS") have, and look to Japan. And thus go all the way.
"Mai-HiME"/"My-Otome". "Panty & Stocking (with Garterbelt)". "Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha". "Najica Blitz Tactics". And - as Tom Cruise Control is making a live-action version of "Yukikaze"* - you can start with a live-action adaptation of "Gunsmith Cats", with Halle Berry as Rally Vincent.
You might as well. Because if you're reduced to - since Harold Ramis' death, thus any hope of a "GBIII" dying along with him - a "Ghostbusters" 'reboot' with an all-female main cast, then I suspect you're already running out of ideas, Hollywood.
