["Why try to change people? The world doesnt have to be exactly like you. It's completely arrogant and ignorant to try to "change" people and "help" people when they dont want it or need it."]
Because, unlike you, we believe you are going to hell and, unlike you, we are actually concerned for others. This is neither arrogant or ignorant.
[The Bible being historically is a bit of evidence, especially as there is no substancial evidence to the contrary of our beliefs]

I, as an atheist, DO care about people. That's why I don't threaten them with hell. If you want to help people, then SHUT UP and help them.
The bible is evidence for the events described in it in the same way Gone With the Wind is evidence that there was an American Civil War. It's ignorant to use historical fiction to defend history.
ignorant yes, maybe not arrogant. For example, a man with schizophrenia may believe that earth will be attacked by giant green spiders. If he tried to help others avoid this percieved threat, then technically, it would not be arrogance, assuming he didn't think that those who he tries to help are inferior to him.
"Because, unlike you, we believe you are going to hell"
This is true. You believe I am going to hell and I do not believe anyone is going to hell.
"and, unlike you, we are actually concerned for others. This is neither arrogant or ignorant."
Not true, at all. This is absolutely ignorant. You base this on nothing more substantial than the bible, ancient fairy tales written (mostly stolen really) by ignorant, brutal, desert tribesmen. Few things could be more ignorant than that. Then it is arrogant to suppose that your ancient fairy tales are backed up by facts and my convictions are not.
mad dog: "If he tried to help others avoid this percieved threat, then technically, it would not be arrogance, assuming he didn't think that those who he tries to help are inferior to him."
I agree. *If* he didn't think the people he was attempting to save were inferior to him. However, as the fundies show often, they do think atheists and nearly everyone else are inferior to them. Just look at the Rapture Ready nuts or the half-wits at Free Conservatives.
Exactly how woefully and wilfully ignorant do you need to be to ignore the "evidence to the contrary of your beliefs"?
Take it away Bob! {first 4 lines slightly edited}
How many lies must a man water down
Before you call him a Christian?
Yes, 'n' how much science must a little fundy fail
Before their head's in the sand?
Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
How many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head,
Pretending he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
Let's reflect on some of the wonderful ways Fundies have shown their 'concern for others' this month, shall we?
"In my city, I plan on putting some tire tracks across some illegals chest."
"And as for the little beaners she lets across the boarder, let them all come at once. Larger target, easier to hit them when they stand in a group like that. They'll learn quickly enough just how well armed the average American citizen is."
"An excellent idea but it is just a start. I would like to see most of the money being wasted on New Orleans used to build something like the Great Wall of China the entire length of both borders."
"My 15 year niece said three gay boys got beat up at her school. She feels so bad. They now want to start a Gay-Straight alliance. I said NO. These groups are not solving anything. They are just making everyone believe that being gay is OK."
"Poisoning a patient with drugs/ medications is outrageous and should be BANNED in the states!!"
"Has anyone seen "Rosie's Family Cruise"? I saw a brief part of it, and not only is it a crappy documentary, but it also enrages me to know that there are so many good couples and families out there who either can't adopt, or don't want to go through the arduous process associated with it, but meanwhile, these sick, perverse same-sex "couples" are allowed to adopt children?"
"Like the bible says.. Thou shall love thy neighbor but hate thy enemy."
"Bush could have said: "I don't like this dirty raghead and i'm going to bomb the hell out of Sadamm's country", I still would have voted for him."
And, of course, the grand-daddy of them all:
"Quite frankly, I think that some of the people that dress that way are asking for trouble.
Take my aunt for example. Now this happened before I was born, but it's something that's been imprinted on my mind. She was 19 years old and dressed provocatively (sp?). When they caught the man (and persecuted) that raped her, his excuse was that she showed a lot of skin and turned him on to the point where he lost control.
To this day, he upholds what he said all those years ago. I know this because he's a family friend. He came to Christ while he was in prison and my family eventually forgave him. Though it took my aunt a lot longer.
And you know what? He's actually a pretty cool guy."
Please . . . stop showing your 'concern' before you kill us all.
If you aren't christian, you are going to hell. If you aren't Muslim you are going to hell. If you aren't a member of religion x, y or z you are going to hell. If you are a Hindu you are going to hell no matter who is right. But the Hindu version of Hell is more like the purgatory. You pay for your sins and are admitted into heaven until you are reincarnated.
Talisman -- The Bible tells Xians that atheists are inferior to believers. A couple of examples:
Psalms 14:1 KJV says "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good."
Psalms 53:1 KJV says "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.' Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good."
NotMe;
That's likely my favorite paradox. Nearly every major religion in the world condemns non-believers and pagans to a bad place of some sort, so if there is only one true god (whichever it may be), then the majority of Earth's population is going to hell. Not an attractive deal.
Yanno, I kinda wish there was an afterlife, just so people like this can get to the pearly gates and be asked "And how many people did you convert to Christianity?"
"Five hundred and ninety seven, Saint Peter!"
"Oh, I'm not Saint Peter, I'm the prime priest of oskoglinton - you've damned those 597 people to hell, where they'll be allowed to punish you for all eternity for what you've done to them."
*sigh* Pity that's not gonna happen ;)
Ali, you idiot! What's gonna happen if I send a bunch of psychiatrists after the religious people?
Subjectively, same thing! Objectively, however, I would be right to do it.
First part's right at least. You DO believe they will go to hell for not being fundies. Hell, I'm Catholic, you probably believe I'm going to hell too.
Second part, however, isn't. After all, this site exists for a reason. I know atheists who are more concerned with the well-being of others than a lot of Christians are. More importantly though, they don't have the fear of hell to guide them, so you could say their good deeds are less selfish.
Actually, i see nothing wrong in trying to help people, or in thinking that people are wrong. But christians don't actually want to help people, they want to help an imaginary part of a person from imaginary dangers, by adopting behaviours that range from useless, through irrational, to despicable.
Confused?
