While browsing a different section of the forums, I came across this quote:
"We Christians serve a risen God and we're saved so we have something worth living for. We should have joy in our hearts and not want to cut ourselves and be selfish."
Aparently this is from the Teens-4-Christ board.
What do other people think of this?
I think self-harm to be a very selfish act indeed, and I believe it to be a form of suicide.
I often wonder how these people who cut can deal with themselves.
I've also looked around, and seem to have discovered many of these "cutters" to be atheists. Does that not say it all?

As someone who used to self-harm, can I just say one thing?
YOU KNOW FUCK ALL ABOUT IT!!

Bullshit.
My understanding is that the practice is not restricted by religious boundaries and is not limited to atheists.
It has a great deal more to do with lack of self-esteem, and it seems to me that being told that you're a worthless piece of crap unless you do exactly what Jesus tells you to do might have a lot to do with that lack of self worth.
Citation please.
Just because "many" cutters may be atheists, that doesn't mean that most cutters are atheists or that atheists are over-represented as cutters when compared to the general or Christian populations.
Cutting is in no way selfish. It can be a desperate attempt to distract one''s self from emotional pain. It can be a desperate attempt to feel SOMETHING. It's desperate and sad, but it is not selfish.
you make me sick. One day, you or someone you love might feel the profound emotional pain that these "cutters" (as you so sensitively call them) feel. I sincerely hope you can deal with it. You insensitive, immoral cow.
I doubt one could win this argument.
The second some young teen girl realizes she has been raised to be a baby mill by her fucked up fundy parents, she is very likely to slash her wrists. If she suceeds in killing herself, some retard like this comes around and says she was not a TRUE christian.
What fraction of the population engages in self-mutilation behaviour? Let's say about 4%
That give us an estimated 12 million self-mutilators in America alone. Let's say about 3% of the population are atheists. If there is no relationship between religiosity and self-mutilation, we expect there to be around 360 000 self-mutilating atheists in America.
So yes, I expect "many" cutters are atheists, but this is no more informative than observing that "many" cutters are named Lisa or "many" cutters own ferrets.
And concerning cutting, it´s a PSYCHOLOGICAL CONDITION, has nothing to do with suicide and please, do some research instead of putting it at the same level of suicide. And by the way, many people suspected of stigmata were, in reality, cutters. You see. You fail.
What. Utter. Drivel.
I think self-harm to be a very selfish act indeed, and I believe it to be a form of suicide. Suicide is when you kill yourself. People survive self-harming.
I often wonder how these people who cut can deal with themselves. They don't.
Self-harming is an incredibly traumatizing experience. It's also addictive, as it's an outlet for contained feelings, and progressive, meaning it gets worse the longer you do it. Finally, it's stigmatized and routinely made fun of on the Internet, and seeking professional help is taboo as psychiatry is considered the devil in today's society and anyone who makes an appointment with a psychiatrist and/or suffers from mental illness is considered 'insane'.
Trust me, you don't want to start going down that road. Anything is better than deliberately hurting yourself. Even, shock and horror , going to an evil atheistic psychiatrist who thinks self-harming is not caused by demonic possession or sin [we'll take a five minute break for you to calm down after that last shocking newsflash]!
I've also looked around, and seem to have discovered many of these "cutters" to be atheists. Right. Atheists are so self-destructive, unlike all the mythological doctrines of peaceful paddling, whipping with belts, skull-cutting with knives (Islam), and other barbaric practices in the name of whatever god you're unfortunate to believe in.
Self-mutilation in one form or another has been recorded throughout history. To say that it is "mostly atheists" is nothing more than a lie, especially given that you worship a guy who let the Romans nail him up!
I will say this however--there is a big difference between those people who self-injure for attention and those who self-injure because they are genuinely mentally ill. I say this because I have known both types of people.
"As someone who used to self-harm, can I just say one thing?
YOU KNOW FUCK ALL ABOUT IT!!"
Thirded.
Self-harm (for me at least) wasn't about attention (gods do I hate being told that, but I know its true for some people) or suicide, it was a release for all the other shit going on in my life, it was how I dealt with myself.
Funnily enough, the poster's use of the word "many" rather than "most" implicitly suggests that even her biased perception is that most 'cutters' aren't atheists.
There is often severe abuse in the childhoods of self-harmers, and having being abused is often a good way to realize that if there is a God rather than love you he at best doesnt give a shit and may actually have it in for you.

You're lying.
Cutters usually have real psychological problems. I am a cutter, this is because I have real psychological problems (which I am receiving treatment for).

All those in the very Catholic country of the Philippines, who have themselves nailed to crosses every Easter. Voluntarily , and of their own free will. Oh yeah. How extremely Atheistic of them. [/Mega-sarcasm]
"Does that not say it all?"
That you're an ignorant cunt, sure.
