Either case there is no excuse for it. 'Marriage' should be defined as between a man & woman. 'Civil Union' should be used for others. The rights would beequal, the distinction seperate.

Because "separate but equal" worked out so well last time...
Tell me. If the rights are, in fact, totally equal, then why have separate distinctions for them? It's like...
"Civil Unions would be just like marriages."
"Then why not call them marriages?"
"Oh no! We can't do that! They're not the same!"
The only opinion I have on this subject is that a gay marriage should be between a husband and a husband and a lesbian one between a wife and a wife. Less confusing for everyone else that way.
Other than that, call it whatever the Hell you want. But yes, Arturis, "seperate but equal is inherently unequal." Don't you know your history?
Well, as long as the marriage is performed in a church I assume they have the right to refuse to do it. Hell, the only reason I support gay marriage is because it pisses Christians off. Otherwise, I really couldn't care less what people do.
While we're at it, why not settle on "science" for stuff that is factually accurate and proven, and "religion" for stories about magic sky men making people out of mud, etc. Then teach "science" in science class and "religion" in religious ed. Separate, but equal see?
Alright, I got to say, as far as fundies go, this one is actually rather foreward thinking. In that he (or she) is actually willing to give equal rights to persons like myself so long as it isn't called the same thing.
Not perfect by any view, but better then most.
But all the laws are written to favor "marriage" by that name. So let the gays be married and the others be called "old-school-marriage", then YOU can get to be unequal under the law for a while, and see how you like it. OK?
It is easier and cheaper to simply call it marriage. Try and imagine the bureaucratic clusterfuck that would ensue as the secular world,- the only world where the definition actually matters-, attempts to accomodate two different terms for the same damn thing.
Marriage is defined, in most European countries, as a legal contract between two consenting adults.
If you want a separate term, why don't YOU be the Civil Union, and the rest of us be marriage?
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
