The Vatican had deeper ties into Hitler's Third Reich than the Vatican will ever admit.
Auschwitz, and other concentration camps, were Catholic Inquisitions.

Buzzing-nuts is correct about the nazis and the Catholic church, they had a great cooperation with the Vatican, both prior to, during and after WWII.
Heck the current pope-a-dope is a former Hitler Jugend.
The rest... ROFLMAO!
What kind of doublethink is necessary for you to believe this shit? Yes, the pope supported Hitler in the beginning, but once people found out in 1943 that the Jews were actually being slaughtered in the camps, instead of just being sent there "to work," everyone, pope included, rescinded their support.
@ Headache: Nearly every child/teenager who lived in Germany then was member of this. - It was kinda mandatory, you know? ... I might not agree with the pope, but one really can't blame him for that...
Even if Buzzardnuts & his fundy ilk got what they wanted, and had the kind of world they wanted - consisting of forced converts (or non-fundies eliminated), they'd still squabble, fight, and even kill each other over scriptural differences. And if those who went against his thinking were eliminated, they'd fight over some other kind of dogmatic trivialities.
... and eventually Buzzardnuts would have the truly perfect world he'd want. Alone. The last human being alive. And even then he'd disagree with himself over why the Rapture hasn't happened yet, thus hating himself. Therefore reaching for a gun, putting it to his head and pulling the trigger.
And then the world would be a perfect place. No longer infected by the fundie disease.
Hating and killing those not exactly like them. It's in the DNA of fundies. Just like the Nazis. Otherwise they'd be the complete opposite of what they are right now: meek, humble, keeping their beliefs to themselves, loving their fellow humans. Being Tolerant of others different to them, and respecting them & their different lifestyles and beliefs/lack of such. The true Christian qualities.
This fundie is a fair way off in describing them as 'Inquisitions', but surprisingly not too far off. The Catholic church in Germany signed the 'Concordat', basically a declaration of support to the Nazi reigime. It is also widely known that the Church repeatedly refused to denounce Nazi crimes before and during World War II. They obviously never got so far as getting out their own fiery pokers, but they could have done a hell of a lot more.
Having said that, a lot of individual religious leaders did speak up against the brutality of the Nazi reigime, but it was never a united resistance, and most were imprisoned or killed.
Both sides need to be taken into account.
I disagree with this point, it is however important to remember that the Vatican and Catholic Church in general took a platform of inaction during the holocaust and many Catholic bishops endorsed the Nazi regime. Hitler himself was a Catholic, he has stated that explicitly in his writings. Not to malign Catholics today, but the actions of the Holy Mother Church during the war can only be described as horrific.
Confused?
