modern scientists need to be reeled in and monitered, no more giving them a free pass or assuming they know what they are talking about, they don't unless they are true christians who apply God's ways to the field.

"Modern Fundies need to be reeled in and monitored, no more giving them a free pass or assuming they know what they are talking about, they don't unless they are sane people who apply reason and logic to the world. "
Fixed.
That's the same thing Stalin did, in the Soviet Union, and they are STILL trying to recover. (Of course Stalin wasn't trying to make sure they were Christians), but he had the same motivation: To rein in scientists, and punish all those who didn't toe the "party line".
Isn't it amazing how much fundamentalism resembles other forms of dictatorships? NAZIism, Stalinist Russia, Maoism. In each, if you are unwilling to support the predominate party, you are shunned, or worse.
So, in addition to taking away their First Amendment right to freedom of the press (a rights violation that cuts both ways), you feel that an educated person who has dedicated his/her life to a subject knows less about it than you do. I find this laughable--someone who doesn't even know enough to use proper grammar and punctuation on a forum is the LAST person I would expect to know anything about ANY of the sciences.
Go ahead. Do it. Monitor science. Shun scientists who are no "true christians" (who decides who is a true christian and whos not, anyway?). Transform science to "applying God's ways".
After a very short time, the rednecks and teabaggers won't need to get upset anymore about all the foreign aid given by the USA. Because then the USA will need to receive foreign aid...
This is their ultimate goal, to lock real knowledge away. Even the movie Expelled had this over-riding concept that Christian beliefs have to be incorporated into science WIETHER THEY FIT OR NOT.
Guess who they think should be in charge of the "reeled in and monitered" agency? Can you imagine Fundie rule over science? Dark-Ages Two
"modern scientists need to be reeled in and monitered, no more giving them a free pass or assuming they know what they are talking about "
Yeah. That would be awesome. Imagine if we got other people to read what scientists wrote and decide whether or not it was true. You know, other people who had, themselves, been proven to know what they're talking about by this system. In other words, we should get scientists to be reviewed by their peers before we accept what they say. That would be a wonderful idea.
'Course, if you fucksticks weren't still living in the 16th century, you might be aware that we've been doing exactly that since the 18th.
"they don't unless they are true christians who apply God's ways to the field. "
Um, no. That's just stupid.
Please sir! Please sir! I know! Me! Me! Ask me, sir! I know how to apply God's way to the field, particularly in regard to the question, 'What constant determines the relationship between the distance to a galaxy and its velocity of recession due to the expansion of the Universe?'
The answer, sir, is that God is the constant. And it is arrived at sir by multiplying God's penchant for genocide by His propensity to punish people for collecting sticks on Sundays that are really Saturdays. So therefore, if you add the number of feet on an insect to pi, or, in other words 4 + 3, you get 7, which equals the number of days in a week, days that are mostly named after cool Gods like Thor, therefore, God's allowance of slavery equals rather precisely the distance from Texas to the Moon. Furthermore, the fact that there is no such thing as evolution, is proof positive that God is bigger than Pluto.
As you can see sir, I want to be a proper God fearing scientist when I grow up.
"Modern scientists need to be reeled in and monitored - no more giving them a free pass or assuming they know what they are talking about. They don't, unless they are true Christians who apply God's ways to the field"
Pope Urban VIII
Roman Inquisition v. Galileo, 1633
So scientists should only be allowed to work if they arrive at a conclusion which is both preconceived and incorrect?
Fuck off somewhere nice and quiet, and grow up.
This idiot (and the other idiots in the thread it comes from) are all complaining about how scientific conclusions change over time. Excuse me, you ignorant jerks, what do you do when you get new evidence? Oh, I forgot -- the truth is truth, unchanging, and evidence doesn't matter a damn.
@LDM
Hear hear! Same here C-section saved me, AND my mom. Can't say the same for my great-aunt Shirley. She died during childbirth because her doctor was a fuckwad who wouldn't believe that anything was wrong. They didn't even have ambulances back then, she had to hitch a ride on the milkman's truck to get to the hospital.
Tell me, archaeologist, do you want us to go back to that stage of life? The stage where way more people die than is necessary because there aren't any of these modern technological advances that can save them? The stage where even more doctors than usual don't have a clue what they're talking about?
Really? You want that? Then you have to answer to my great-aunt Shirley, and every other person who has died simply because they had the misfortune of not being born in the late 20th century. She didn't even get to meet her son, let alone her first nephew. She was 18. She was a frigging child. And she died because science just wasn't far along enough to a) provide her with contraception, b) advise her that having a child at age 18 might not be wise, and c) diagnose her ailment soon enough. If you want science to come to a screeching halt so we can save even less lives than we already would have, then fuck you because what you're basically saying is that people like Aunt Shirley deserve to die, because you and your god said so.
What is with these morons and their attempts to 'reel in' (or, as RushBo suggests, "control") other people's freedom of speech.
They're just calling down fire on themselves. Their masters will turn on them eventually as well.
> modern scientists need to be reeled in and monitered
Do you even listen to what you're saying?
Scientist: "Hey, I think we invented something!"
Boss: "No, that's impossible. Go invent something for real."
...why, yes, that is completely stupid, and why, yes, that's basically what you're proposing.
In the middle east, during the 6th century and such, it was THE place for science (alegabra came from there). After Islam, Science there is just now moving into the 7th century.
This is interesting psychologically if you look at the whole thread. The people there obviously can't cope with the uncertainty that comes from theories changing in the light of new evidence. They don't seem to understand the beauty of that cumulative and changing progression toward truth. For them truth is just "fixed" and eternal, something written in an old book and not to be questioned.
"It needs to be remembered that 1 fossil a species does not make. there are many, many other options available for the existence of a fossil. disease, deformation, genetic reactions and so much more are just a few factors that come into play. every fossil discovered is not a new speciees of animal or human. "
From the man who posted the original quote..this man doesnt know CRAP about fossils.
The average life expectancy in the Stone age was about 30 years.
By the Bronze age it had risen to the glorious heights of 35 years.
But by the first few centuries AD it stayed unchanged at about 35 years.
In the last century and a half it has risen to over 80 years in the west.
20,000 years of grovelling to spirits in the sky did diddly-squat compared to less than 200 years of modern science.
God's way sucks. Science saves lives.
*sigh*
most of the time, posts like this just make me think that this attitude will result in the USA falling into undeveloped-world-status even quicker, and i can't REALLY be bothered to care if that's what they want.
Except that the Dakotas are where the USA stores its nucular bombs, so that's a dangerous piece of land to be possessed by Medieval-minded morons
Okay you don't want science in your life? Fine, no electricity for you. Oh and your precious guns, that's science too so hand them over. And no trying to start firs either, since an exothermic reaction is totally science. If you want to stay warm you just have to sit on your ass and pray to God like the Bible tells you to.
In other words so we don't learn anything and the scientific field becomes a complete farce which is useless and will end up dumbing the earth back into its medieval era where people lived in filth and disease and had to struggle without rest to merely stay alive.
Edit to add that this guy must be one of the dumbest fuckers alive, the rest of his ranting reads like a fucking 8 year old that's tired of having his toys taken away for being an asshole
I second LDM and NoriMori's sentiments. My own mother would be dead at least two times over if not for science as it's currently done (read: minus the supernatural).
Anyway, what makes you think that scientists DON'T know what they're talking about? You fundies only want to rein them in because they're taking away the attention and authority that people used to give to religion back before there was an alternative that worked.
Yes, Science is always changing its opinions. Some scientific opinions are based on guesswork based upon insufficient data. Some scientific opinions are based on faulty reasoning. Scientists are only human, and make mistakes like the rest of us.
The key factor in Science is its self-correcting character. Mistakes will go on being made, there may be some wrong roads taken, and some futile detours, but Science will draw ever closer to the Truth.
The accumulation of information, both empirical and deductive, must necessarily cause changes of opinions. Otherwise, learning stops and we stand pat forever.
I note that religious fundamentalism does NOT have a self-correcting character. The reason is simply that it fails to admit data or reasoning that conflict with current opinion. Hence, it is an intellectual dead end.
Guess what, "archaeologist"? They have tried to apply "God's ways" to the field.
Guess what happened? They had to quit because it just didn't work.
How do those people take this kind of thing when someone tells them that the facts don't match up with their ideology?
Here is a list of what young-earthers have called me in response to my data: 'an apostate,'(Humphreys) 'a heretic'(Jim Bell although he later apologised like the gentleman he is) 'a compromiser'(Henry Morris) "absurd", "naive", "compromising", "abysmally ignorant", "sloppy", "reckless disregard", "extremely inaccurate", "misleading", "tomfoolery" and "intentionally deceitful"(John Woodmorappe) 'like your father, Satan' (Carl R. Froede--I am proud to have this one because Jesus was once said to have been of satan also.) 'your loyality and commitment to Jesus Christ is shaky or just not truly genuine' (John Baumgardner 12-24-99 [Merry Christmas]) "I have secretly entertained suspicions of a Trojan horse roaming behind the lines..." Royal Truman 12-28-99
Thing is, that's how creationist institutions operate when they hire . Even when they say that they won't.
"modern scientists need to be reeled in and monitered,..."
AND THEN EXTERMINATED!!! EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! WE ARE THE SUPERIOR BEINGS!!!11!1!!1
I know, the comparison just had to appear somehow.
I wonder if all the scientists in countries that are not predominantly christian are aware that they have to conform to denominational rules laid down by radical right wing American christians?
Are the Chinese aware of this?
Do those christians in Dakota even know China or the rest of the world outside of the fly-over states of the USA exists?
"Oh, Peking man no exist because of Chlistian Cleation stoly, ok, plaise God."
Here's a gem from ol' arch:"computers isolate people and make them easier to brainwash" he/she/it types...on a computer.
Later he/she/it lumps together theories with assumptions and opinions. YAAAAARGBLR! THEORIES ARE BACKED UP WITH A SHITTON OF EVIDENCE! EVOLUTION IS A THEORY THE SAME WAY AS THE THEORY OF GRAVITY, OR GERM THEORY! FUCK YOU, SIR, MADAM, OR THING!
"...it does not take a science degree to toss a ball in the air and see gravity at work or to replicate galileo's ball experiment and see that they fall at the same rate." Like you wouldn't have gone after Galileo for daring to claim the Earth revolves around the sun, you shift-key-less punk. By the way, the man was a fucking scientist.
Oh, look, "n*z*" (yes, they censor the word "nazi") evil comes from "rejecting God".
@Reverend Jeremiah: It's not even a circle-jerk. It's archaeologist masturbating. Most of the posts in the thread are from archaeologist.
Scientists aren't getting a free pass at all. The peer-review process prevents that. Whereas your "True Christian" process gives a free pass to so-called scientists who tell you what you want to hear instead of what the evidence supports. For real scientists, such deferential treatment is unacceptable, because they use the knowledge they obtain in the real world to improve the human condition. When you're using the information you've obtained to improve the world, you want it to be as accurate as possible. "The Bible says it, therefore it's true" is no way to accomplish that.
modern scientists need to be reeled in and monitered, no more giving them a free pass or assuming they know what they are talking about
Oh, is that how you really think science really works? That everyone just agrees on something because some scientist said so? No, and it's unbelievably ignorant to suggest that anything of the sort happens. There's a reason why you have to devote years of study and experimentation and then take that tireless work to peer review where a decade or more worth of work can be dashed to bits in an instant and that's because in science having an independently verified, highly tested, and applicable theory is the holy grail. It's preachers who get a free pas for whatever bullshit they want to spew from their mouth, not hardworking scientists. It's a shame that you chose the handle "archaeologist" when you have such an extreme disrespect for and ignorance of the scientific process.
modern scientists need to be reeled in
= they are fish?
and monitered,
= turned into lizards
no more giving them a free pass
~~~ Passes for what? Are they in the military?
or assuming they know what they are talking about,
~~~ Should we assume archaeologist knows what he/she is talking about? I think not!
they don't unless they are true christians who apply God's ways to the field
~~~And the proof of God is? And the proof that archaeologist knows God's wayas better than anyone else?
Doesn't America have homes for the bewildered and mentally benighted?
When Christians get their way:
Shit! Why is there no electricity? Is there a scientist in the audience? No? Well good! Let's pray until the lights go back on.
Note: That day, everyone starved and the lights never came back on. Noone knew how to fix the power or water plant and soon, the black plague broke out again and the Christians started massacring cats. A couple of centuries later, intelligent cockroaches start analyzing the remains of our societies and conclude that we were idiots and totally had it coming.
Modern scientists use things like "logic" and "reasoning", two concepts that most fundies don't understand. So if not using your brain is what it means to be a "true Christian" they don't need to be in any kind of scientific field.
Also, scientists use something called "empirical evidence" to back up what they say. Fundies use fallacy. They are not the same thing.
Think twice before typing in a computer, IDIOT!!!
Not gonna happen, he can't think the first time!!
"Modern religious leaders need to be reeled in and monitered, no more giving them a free pass or assuming they know what they are talking about, they don't unless they are peaceful supporters of freedom who apply democratic ways to their sermons."
Or - even better - lynched.
By the bollocks.
With piano wire.
Righto, everybody - if you'll excuse me, I'm about to make a visit to a hardware shop, and then I'm going to see some people at Canterbury Cathedral. I might even stop off at Finsbury Park Mosque along the way ...
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
