Not sure about other states, but in Texas they're most certainly not forbidden. They just can't be mandatory or distract for teaching. You know, that thing that schools are there for.

When I see 100+ students praying as a group by the flagpole in the morning or in an FCA meeting, it's hard to think that prayer is "expressly forbidden."

I would love to see this guy's reaction to a Muslim student pulling out a prayer rug during class. Just a guess that he'd have a bit of a problem with that.

Conservapedia claims to love the U.S. (to the point of having the flag in the logo), but apparently hates the document it was founded on. The very first amendment of said document forbids the religious stuff mentioned. The rest of the stuff is pure lying for Jesus, such as the part about homosexual indoctrination. Seriously? Last time I checked the state I'm from, Illinois, is one of the liberal states you speak of, and there was no such thing. Your head is so far up your ass(fly) that your obsession with fundie homeschooling left you completely ignorant of how public schools work.

So what? Kids don't go to school to pray or learn religion, and they especially don't go to school to say your prayers or learn your religion. They go there to learn to read, do math and acquire other life skills. If our kids' schools are under-performing, they sure won't be helped by taking away time from reading and math to practice somebody else's religion.

The fact is, people who want school prayer don't want their own kids to pray. They can do that at home, as they well know. They want to use public schools to proselytize for their religion and make other peoples' kids pray.

The first target of the ignorant is education. Face it, you don't hate public schools because they're atheist and don't allow pray. My high school had a Christian Alliance Club, but no Atheist Club, and I probably would have been expelled for forming one. After all, secular =/= atheist, even though atheists are secular.

No, the real reason is because they teach kids the truth. And education is the best weapon against your ignorant religious and political ideology. Conservatism has no basis in reality.

Hey, current high schooler right here.

I have plenty of discussions about religion (specifically Catholicism) with a fellow student of mine. The school is absolutely fine with that. One of my teachers has openly talked about her beliefs in the classroom. She's still employed at the school, much to my joy because she's possibly one of the best teachers at the school.

I've combed through the student handbook and there are no rules against spoken prayer. I'm certain it would be allowed if at an appropriate time and not in a distracting manner.

Hell, after one of the most beloved teachers at the school passed away (rest in peace Phil!), some students were taken up voluntarily to the local church for some comfort and time for reflection and prayer.

You're right about the Ten Commandments, but when we had World Religions class (cancelled due to other commitments by the teacher who held it), I bet it was covered.

In elementary school, I heard nothing about homosexuality from the teachers. I found that stuff out on my own, or from my homophobic mother. Sure, this probably has changed, but is nothing beyond the "some people have two mommies or two daddies. Nothing wrong with that" sort of thing. No teaching kindergarteners about fisting or whatever lies you're spreading now. :P As for middle school sex-ed, pretty much routine things about various birth control methods and how the reproductive system works. Plus, you can opt-out of that easily.

All this in the liberal commonwealth of Massachusetts.

And I'm sorry, but that last sentence makes you sound like a parody.

When I went to elementary school back in the 70s our teachers led a morning prayer every day before the Indoctrination of Allegiance. Then in high school every year they let the Gideons come in and hand out Bibles at a mandatory assembly.
Guess what, bitch, I'm atheist.
Oh, and in this small podunk town, I'd guess at LEAST 75 percent of my Bible-believin' friends who stayed behind got married due to unplanned pregnancies. (Did I mention that sex ed was conspicuously absent in the school curriculum?) Fortunately I had older siblings who gave me the talk about contraceptives, and I knew I wanted -- needed desperately -- to get the fuck out of that hellhole ASAP. Chalk another one up to education.

Well yes it is secular, because of that pesky little thing called the First Amendment creating a separation between church and state. If you want the kids to learn about the "truthiness" of the bible, enroll them at a private school that receives no federal funding and you pay out of your own pocket.

Education isn't cheap, and we could focus more on education instead of attacking random countries who "hate us for our freedoms" and having a stupid system like No Child Left Behind (a deceptively named law if there ever was one), we could see about finding ways to improve it for all students and eliminate the achievement gap for real.

I went to a public school, you could pray but only if you weren't being disruptive and not forcing anyone to join you but the school couldn't join in. Everyday I walked in before first bell, some group was out in front of the flagpole praying, with a staff member or two sometimes but after first bell they just taught like they where supposed to.

@louislois: Conservapedia's hatred for landfills stems from two pieces of conservative doctrine:

(1)ANYTHING government does automatically fails, no matter what is is; but corporations and private industry are A-OK! Also, government oversight of private industry is an intolerable burden, even if--especially if--the company is behaving in a corrupt and criminal manner; you should let your purchasing dollars do the talking and refuse to do business with them instead, or simply leave for a place that's better--even if it isn't practical or feasible for you to to do so. (NOTA BENE: This applies mostly to large corporations and corporate monopolies, not small businesses and mom n' pop-style affairs, since it's natural for large companies to kill and eat the smaller ones--it's just nature, folks!)

(2)Disposing of garbage in a relatively environmentally sound manner, i.e., not burning it in great piles in our yards or dumping it all in the nearest river or lake, smacks of environmentalism, which is teh bad because only liberals give a damn about fresh water, clean air or responsible stewardship of animals, plants or mineral resources. Also, because garbage collection is often a function of local government that's paid for by your tax dollars, see (1). Remember, ALL taxation is theft!

Their hatred of public schools comes from a healthy dose of (1) combined with both a dose of seething hatred for anything remotely secular and an overwhelming desire to tear it down in favor of a completely private educational system with no outside oversight or accountability to anyone. In such a system, the children of parents who can afford to send their children to a private school would receive a massive load of indoctrination in conservative Christian politics and political values as well as (or even in preference to) a normal education. The children of parents who can't would be forced to homeschool their children, which would help keep at least one parent (wink wink, nudge nudge) out of the workforce at least part of the time, or they would be forced to forgo education altogether--which is also acceptable, since a poorly educated, poverty-riddled population is much easier for political and religious demagogues to control.

Canadian health care system: As we all know, our health care system is the worst in the world, since it's paid for by our tax dollars instead of by the poor sap who just lost his finger. That's why we Canadians are changing things so that Americans can no longer cross the border and make use of the heavily discounted service that we provide. It's strictly for the Americans' benifit, so that they don't have to make do with our inferior system.

The fact that public schools don't not engage in religious teaching does not make them "atheistic" in nature, it makes them secular. There is a difference between the two, it's like saying that McDonald's is is implicitly atheistic in nature because they don't give sermons with their happy meals.

No, they are not. Further ore I challenge you to cite a single american law that expressly forbids a student from praying, wearing a ten commandments t-shirt, etc. What is forbidden is teacher led, mandatory, and sectarian religious expressions. Students are free to pray or witness to other student as much as they want, provided they do not disrupt the class or harass other students.

No, they are secular, not atheistic, in accordance with your Constitution, stupid. Are you dissing the Constitution, you anti-American prick? Schools can't endorse one religion over other religions. If there were to be spoken prayers, there would have to be prayers to all gods and spirits. If there were "sharing faith", there would be wiccans, Buddhists, Native Americans and Aesirs sharing their faiths along with the Abrahamic ones (Christianity, Islam, Judaism). Do you understand now, why religion should be kept out of schools?

Morality, as in teaching the kids to follow the laws and the golden rule, is not disfavored, surely. One specific set of religion-based morality is disfavored though, again because then all kinds of moralities would have to be taught, including Satanism.

Saying that homosexuality is a natural variation, or refraining from vilifying gay people, is not indoctrination, stupid, it's simply common sense.

Make up your mind, OK! Are they liberal or socialist? They are NOT synonyms, but ideologies on different wings of the political spectrum. Liberalism is Every man for himself, Socialism is Together we are strong.

The Canadian healthcare system seems to work, in contrast to the American joke of a system. Obamacare only removes a few of the really, really bad aspects of it, but it's still crap. Sadly, the Swedish right-wingers are aiming to copy the American system as much as they can. We had a functioning system before they took office (it had quite a lot of flaws too, but it worked), but after our government has lowered the taxes for the richest, there is less money for unimportant stuff like schools, hospitals, retirement homes, roads, and the government feels that we can afford those things ourselves, with all the extra money we don't have to pay in taxes now...

The underfunding of public schools is well documented as the reason for all falling results.
The underfunding of public schools is a continious yearly hit and is entirely a Republican/Conservative policy.

You've got fields of tanks, enough for any modern land war sitting in wait. Time to quit building tanks? No, say the very conservative Republican. But we've got to cut the budget so we'll take money from the schools, welfare programs, medicare and social security.

Still not enough for the overkill military budget? Well, then lets take money away from roadworks, bridge maintenance, sanitation services, not in my neighborhood but elsewhere for sure, says the conservative.

Still not enough to keep the war-machine over-productive? Tax the poor and middle class heavier, gut education, the safety net, unemployment insurance, veterans benefits (they served their purpose) return to the gilded age where the rich and church were kings and the rest were property, good conservative values.

Conservapedia, the voice of dictatorship, still pissed Reagan wasn't made King and Christianity made mandatory, Southern bigotry became established dogma and everyone knuckled under or died.
