To state it bluntly, Senator Portman, Christianity, the Word of God, and the proper view of homosexuality has nothing to do with you or your changing perspective. It has everything to do with the unchanging Word of God. Your attempt to cloak your opinion by distorting the Word of God is not only offensive but blasphemous. I encourage you to open your Bible and read what it says about false teachers and those who add to or take away from the Word of God.
I understand that your son is a homosexual. As a Christian you are called to love him but you cannot condone his sin and encourage others to do the same. Principles are higher than our individual circumstances. Principles do not change because the circumstances in our lives change.
He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it. (Matthew 10:37-39)
Condoning the sin of homosexuality will not help your son to lead a “happy, meaningful” life. He cannot lead such a life in direct opposition to the Word of the Lord. You have taken the easy path and it will only lead to sin and death, error, and worse.

In other words, fundie cultists refuse to acknowledge that what they think is the word of God is actually the manic babble of a load of old beardy middle eastern wannabe tent commanders who, lacking any form of decent character and attractive charisma, let alone, probably, physical appeal, resorted to the usual underhand tactics of grizzled numbskulls throughout mankind's existence in order to get virgins for sexual gratification purposes.
Of course, this is assuming that your view of God is correct and not anyone else's, like those who actually believe in a kind, compassionate, and loving God.

Many "happy and meaningful" lives have been led without the "Word of God."
Sin is only possible if there is a deity to be offended. Death comes to us all. Every one commits errors. By worse I assume you mean hell, which, even if it was real, could be entirely discounted if your idea of a God wasn't a huge a$$hole.

People's personal principles DO change when circumstances in their lives change. One such circumstance might be being given information one didn't previously have. In this case, Senator Portman's view of homosexuals as evil and immoral has probably changed because he saw that his son was homosexual and yet good and moral. I mean, born-again Christians change their principles when they have their revelatory experiences, right? How is that not changing your principles based on changing circumstances in one's life?

While I think it is a bit hypocritical of Senator Portman to change his views on gay marriage now, at least he has the balls to stand up for what is right, even if it is an attempt to score political points. But I can also see the Repubs fighting to nominate someone else when he comes up for reelection.
