If the student was black and had reacted like this I suspect you wouldn't be crowing about black tears, and rightfully so. You may stereotype white tourists like Otto Warmbier as over-entitled toffs who think they can get away with everything, but that's where prejudice lies.
Otto may have been foolish, naive, utterly moronic and cocky, but the extreme response to his actions should be your prime focus, and your ire, as this is what's truly disgusting about it.

I actually feel terrible for this young man. He's a pure and simple hostage. The North Koreans trumped up a charge probably as soon as they saw his passport in order to ransom him. Nothing about it is just.
However, my point was that the OP was not being racist. UVA is a very elite and very white place. This kid's privledges probably blinded him to the risks of travel to a country technically at war with the US and its allies. The OP is pointing it out in a bit harsher term than what I would have used.
In any other part of the world, including outside of the West, Otto would have been fined, deported, or maybe jailed for a short period.
But in the psychotic prison-state of North Korea, he gets sentenced to many years of hard labour. He didn't hurt anyone. He didn't sabotage anything. He did one minor act that the racist militarists of the NK hierarchy used as an excuse to be shitty to one individual, flexing their muscles in a vulgar and petty display of power, in a pathetic attempt to appear strong.
I'm not fond of privileged white dudebros, but I hate domineering statist tyrants even more, as well as the stupid fucking shitwits who think they're sticking it to "the man" by cheering on such abuses.
Idiots like "Decolonise the World" fail to realise that shitty regimes like North Korea consider folks like them to be at best useful idiots, and at worst would shove them into the labour camps to be worked to death alongside guys like Otto.
