An ancient Buddha statue, which was found in Pakistan's Takht Bahi area in Mardan district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa while digging the foundation of a house, was vandalised by local construction workers on Saturday as they considered the relic to be "unIslamic".

Workers who were digging the foundation of a house discovered the ancient relic said to be from the Gandhara civilisation. Calling the idol “unIslamic”, the men smashed the statue into pieces.

A video of the incident that has gone viral on social media shows the construction workers destroying the idol using a sledgehammer and expressing their resentment towards it.

Abdul Samad, director, Archaeology and Museums in KPK said, “We have located the area and we will have those involved arrested soon.”

Pakistani media has reported that four people involved in vandalising the statue have been arrested.

Buddhism is more philosophy than religion. So, what precludes Buddhist Islam? (Serious question, by the way.)

I've heard of plenty of supernatural miracle stuff associated with Buddhism. It seems like any other religion to me.

Pretty sure that Buddhism is not a religion because it does not worship any deities. Buddha is in fact not a god (as I was taught back in religious studies when I was young), but rather the “enlightened one” who founded the philosophy.

That being said, f*ck those workers. They’re no better than ISIS, who were using dynamite on priceless ancient ruins.

I’m sure they exist but a person would have to be pretty far out fringe in their beliefs to make it work. Basic Buddhism supports reincarnation, Islam is like Christianity in being a one shot and done religion. You would have to be nearly atheistic to wed those two and at that point your probably giving up both. Also, Islam is very insistent about not letting in outside beliefs/rituals. Mixing Islam with another religion would be a big violation of basic principle.

On the practical side where the two overlap the population tends to be divided along religion-racial groupings with oppression and violence being standard. Publicly trying to mix the two might get you beaten/killed from either side.

Buddhism is counted as a religion by most people. This really gets into hair splitting. The common branches of Buddhism believe in the existence of gods and most include respect and veneration of those gods as part of their practices. They are just not focused on worship of those gods. Only a few modern movements are really atheistic.

I hope they have ro repair the damages or better make tgem pay for the damaged

I knew the Khyber Pass region was really backward but I would have thought this dreck would be only done by Daesh and the Talibans.

Speaking of which, they should join the Talibans.

And I wouldn’t let them nearer from this statue one more time.
