[Thread title: The Crusades: Where were all the Christians?]
BUT, I guess where my problem is, is with people lumping all of us Christians together as in "through out the years, Christians have been more guilty of mass murder then any other religion, just look at the crusades" blah blah blah.
When in fact it was the catholics!

And the Catholics are, CHRISTIANS!!!!!. And well, you forgot the witch hunt and the quaker persecution, or the Indian genocide, in USA at least, exclusively work of your ancestors.
True Scotsman, party of zero, your table is ready.
Also, now that you've claimed that Catholics aren't Christians, I trust that you will not also claim that the positive contributions to civilization made by Catholics are attributable to Christianity.
Catholics are Christians. But fine, if you don't like the Crusades, then what about Salem? Or all of the people who were killed in all of the idiotic in-fighting between Protestants and Catholics? Or all of the people that the Klan murdered? Or who knows how many people who have been killed by "good" Christians because they were gay, or worshipped some other god(s), and on and on and on. You can't squirm out of it by saying it's all the fault of the Catholics.
May I assume you're from the US? Yes? Good...
If, as you say, Catholics are not Christians, then the majority of people in the US are NON-Christians...
Note to all who argue that Catholics are not Christians but ALSO argue that the majority of the US is Christian... It's one or the other, you can't have both!
The crusades - wern't christian
Nazis - not christian
Terrorism in Ireland - no christians there
People who bomb abortion clinics - not christians
People who call themselves christian but do something wrong anyways - not christian
People who put peanut butter and jelly on the same slice of bread - not christians
This is why I'm beginning to like catholics more and more, at least they admit that there is such a thing as a catholic. Apparantly, however, there has never been, or never will be, a christian.
The old "nobody's a real Christian except us Baptists" myth. See Trail of Blood . Nobody but a handful of American fundie "Landmark" Baptists believe this self-invented, offensive and arrogant crap, and never will. Give it up.
It's Fundie "logic." As soon as some "good" Xian commits a transgression, even though Jesus will supposedly forgive him/her, other "good" Xians deny that he was ever really a Xian at all. It really is a very convenient system.
Catholics are Christians, you moron!
Not according to Jack Chick , they're not!
Catholics are, Christian, dumbass. Just because they don't follow your particular brand of Christianity doesn't mean they aren't Christian. Though I guess the relative sanity they have makes them less Christian, as it seems the craziest of the Christian groups also consider themselves the most Christian.
Not only are Catholics Christians, they're the original Christians, from which all other sects seceeded - first the Orthodox and then the Protestants.
To this day, they remain the single most powerful religion, sect and church in the world. (I don't remember the exact numbers, I believe it was something around 30-35% of the world, but don't quote me on this.)
The Catholic Church explains Jack Chick's objections, and provides similar scriptural quotes that are counter to the ones he gives. It just shows that you can find something in the Bible to justify just about any opinion you want to invent. I'm sure a Catholic would have no trouble writing a "Chick Tract" on Baptists, complete with quotations from the Bible, and do a similar hatchet job on their beliefs.
If you refuse to recognize catholics as christians when it comes to all the bad stuff done in the name of the religion you share with them, then quit claiming that christians are a majority in America - because without the catholics (the denomination of the vast majority of christians), you are nothing.
@Chan, yeah, I realize the Byzantine split had already occured, but I was referring to Christians in Western Europe, where the Crusades originated from. Apologies for being unclear.
Well, yes, the Crusades were the product of the Roman Catholic Church, which is Christian.
But that is not the only example.
And fundies are just as guilty of generalizing as those responding in kind.
The Catholics are the original Christians, stupid.
If you're only counting protestants, then Christianity is not the largest religion on Earth, dearie. If you split Christianity into different parts, Islam becomes the largest religion on Earth. About 800 million people are protestants, adhering to one of the 30 000 different denominations. Christ sure is a unifying entity, isn't he?
“BUT, I guess where my problem is, is with people lumping all of us Christians together”
Gee, wonder who does that.
Like when anyone arguing popularity lumps all christains together to say that the nation is 66% christain. But really, the Protestants are only 44% and think the Catholics and everyone else aren’t really going to their heaven.
Confused?
