I saw 80s and 90s. And while I miss my high school years and teen years, let's bees honest. The 90s weren't like the family movies. Hell Married with Children was closer but still inaccurate. Of my friends back then I was one of the few whose parents were still married.

Side note: this must be how people who remember the actual 50s feel.

I was a teenager in 1991. And my experience of the early ’90s bore little resemblance to the media of the day, or at least any of the media that I saw. Those idealized views of the world were always a phantom for most, but by the 1990s it was a phantom of a world which was already long gone.

For pretty much all of the 20th Century, western entertainment was very heavily geared toward the sensibility of middle-class whites, due to that category of people being most able to access and afford mass-culture entertainment. There were exceptions, of course (witness conservatives bitching about Sesame Street’s “excessively liberal” treatment of race for its entire existence, since 1969!) but it was largely seen as justified, from a purely economic perspective. There was a gradual increase in “nontraditional” audiences of various sorts over the 1980s when mass-market media became much more accessible, but it wasn’t until the very end of the 1990s that most media producers realized just how much of an untapped market there was out there, and even then most of them were cautious about backlash from middle-class whites for another decade.

Now that media markets are highly fragmented, and on-demand access available to virtually everyone, there is little economic justification for not catering to a wide variety of audiences - and most of those audiences are going to want their “politics” (the political is the personal) reflected to some extent. Demanding that media cater only to you used to be a privilege; now it’s an entitlement, and a particularly unrealistic one at that.

Oh, brother! Now the 1990s are the fabled “Leave It To Beaver” land. Meanwhile, this guy’s Dad is probably lamenting 1969 is the time things went downhill while grandpa is blaming 1955.

Yes the 90s weren't exactly the family show that some people want to make out. Good old days though, grunge music and flannel shirts for everyone, freedom for me. And we all had a whole Millennium to look forward to!

I know! The 1990s was awash in cynicism. Even a certain anti-racism movie felt it necessary to add a tacked-on cruel-twist ending to what would’ve been a god movie, thus undermining it’s aesop… because… angst and cynicism is “cool”!

Fuck American History X The REAL ending is “Big brother saves little brother from NeoNazism and breaks the cycle of hate… which can be stopped and escaped from! The End!”.

Edit out the fatalistic cockamamie B.S. last scene with the kid getting turned into swiss cheese and that’s the real ending!

With the bad ending, the ending becomes either or both…

… NO WONDER STAR WARS WAS SUCH A HUGE SMASH (and Heaven’s Gate was a bloated bomb)!

Look, I understand that the war will be hard and the bad guys win a lot of battles (and in the case of some of these films, the negativity was more a call to examine ourselves so we don’t have endings like that in real life. The protagonists of Easy Rider were actually losers with no plan or direction, they ‘Blew it’)… but I also feel that, if a happy ending is unavoidable, at least make it bittersweet…
My take on the end of Heaven’s Gate… after the mess that went down, the main character realizes that he was doing things the wrong way and resolves to use his wealth and influence to get into politics and take on the Cattle Barons that way! That’s how it should have ended.

Funny thing is, before 9/11 and the “War on Terror”, the 1990s do seem almost idyllic. With the exception of the Yugoslavian mess, it seems some things were getting better… The Iron Curtain fell, Russia seemed to be on the track of being a free country, the Berlin Wall fell, etc.

That reminded me of thoughts I’ve had about something near the ending of The Hunt (2020), for anyone who have seen that:

As Athena Stone (Hilary Swank) and Crystal Creasey (Betty Gilpin) lay on the floor, with serious injuries they’ve just inflicted on each other, Athena, being a classist, gets a big suprise when Crystal reveals that she has read Animal Farm.
How it could have gone:
Crystal: “Sophomore year, high school, English class. We were divided into groups for book reports. My group got Animal Farm.”
Athena: “High school??? What… you never finished middle…”
Crystal (interrupting): “I TOLD you! You’re thinking of Crystal M-A-E Creasey! I’M Crystal M-A-Y Creasey!” (beat) “Wrong Crystal, miss Stone!”
Athena (like in the real movie): “Whoops!” (dies)

The 90's were good and bad. But I think we had good reason to be optimistic then. But then people like the OP decided that the good future we were headed for where they weren't allowed to bully anyone who didn't conform to their bigoted authoritarian fantasies was unacceptable and they lost their collective shit. That, plus 9/11 and the dumbass "war in terror" surveillance state paranoia and now we've got a genuine fascist movement running amok.

I don't know if miserable as much as they probably were born after the 90s. It's akin to the idea of watching Pkeasantville or Leave it to Beaver or Happy Days and thinking the 50s must have been fun times but not knowing what was really going on. Hence why I states what I did in original post. I loved the 90s. But I do not wish society to go back. I will keep my high school memories. But will never understand the rose coloured glasses of nostalgia for times one didn't experience

A lot of what appears to be progress isn't. Favoritism is still bigotry. Bigotry of low expectations is still bigotry. Equality of outcome is impossible. So having such a standard will get you nowhere except perpetual conflict.

For example an individual like Jacob Blake will never admit that it isn't "systemic racism" or "racist cops" keeping him down, it's his own ridiculous public behavior and refusing to act like anything resembling a decent human being. A guy like that will never amount to anything no matter how much of his ass people kiss. You can even give him a million dollars, he'll probably just blow it all on drugs or whatever like most people who come into a lot of money they never earned.
