Yeah it’s almost as if the government drew “red lines” over those cites in the 1930s saying what parts were “good” and what parts were “bad” allowing mortgages and real estate value to go to those “good” sections. Then, somehow after World War II they decided to build highways so the people in the “good” sections could drive out to the suburbs, take the equity with them (and into jurisdictions that are wholly separate from the city to prevent the city from getting those resources), and build highways through the “bad” sections making them even “worse”.

But nah, it’s got to be the Democratic governments that have taken root in those cities following all of that.

And don’t get me started on your TV show. Like most other quiverfull families you were hovering around the poverty line barely able to adequately care for the kids that you were bringing into the world. Then you get a TV show and suddenly you can cover your bills, use that to form connections with powerful figures in the Christian authoritarian movement, then act all high and mighty against people in this world struggling to get by on the meager resources they’re allowed advocating for policies to slash away at even that straw of security. Exactly, the Republicans were first getting into bed with the Christian Right at the time and they were celebrating the fact that this disease was dropping gay men left and right. Although, evangelical Christian Surgeon General C. Everett Coop sided with Fauci and the science and tried to educate the public about the facts of the virus rather than fanning or not putting out the flames of fear like the White House.

It took Rock Hudson and Ryan White (a straight white kid) to really change opinions in the Reagan administration, and it’s not like the first Bush or Clinton were that great (albeit way better than Ronnie was) when it came to HIV policy.

Although he was more famous for the disputes he had with ActUP in the 1980s (he was advocating caution with regards to experimental treatments for HIV they wanted to go faster than what the science suggested at the time), conservatives have more or less always hated on him. He dared suggest that HIV should be taken seriously by the government, that it could be prevented with the right precautions, and that resources should be made available to create drugs to save lives. Meanwhile, conservatives were literally celebrating the AIDS crisis and actively getting in the way of preventative measures and further research.

Read her statement carefully, she never said any of that. She pointed out how demand for various documents have been wielded as a hammer against Blacks and other people of color. The line about birthers makes sense in that context although it requires more context. All she’s calling for is implementing these policies in a manner that doesn’t disproportionately negatively affect POC.

Because you know what else they’re frequently accused of? Spreading disease.

She should have articulated this a bit better but she’s not too far off he mark though. She said nothing undermining vaccines just pointed out that being forced to show documents has been seriously problematic in US history. If anything it should be the councilwoman quoted here because she’s trying to reframe the issue and ignore the issue of structural racism.

For people of color in the US “documents” have been a major issue; a way of forcing them to prove that they belong. By law free Blacks had to have documents on them at all times or else they’d be arrested and enslaved. Technically, any non US citizen must have documentation at all times or else. Given what we know about law enforcement in the US I could easily see a scenario where a vaxed Black man forgets his card, the cops get called, and he’s extrajudicially executed.

There is a shortage of them and we need to reserve them for the people who need them the most. If we let “the market” (aka the wealthy) decide that then there would have been a shortage in a critical area.

A cloth mask won’t provide the same level of protection, true, but that’s because in most situations we don’t need that level. Yet they’re still effective in cutting transmission.
