The authors of a new book on atheistic living held a contest in which they invited secularists to submit their suggestions for “10 Atheist Non-Commandments.” (By the way—isn’t it interesting that they are doing what the devil has been doing since Genesis 3: trying to counterfeit what God has done?)
According to CNN, this contest received 2,800 submissions from 18 different countries. But really, what is the point of atheists writing up a list of non-commandments? What is a “non-commandment” anyway? They have no basis for their moral views other than their own opinions, which can vary from atheist to atheist on certain matters! Without an absolute standard given by our Creator, atheists have no foundation for their moral beliefs, as the name “non-commandments” implies. Morality simply becomes “everyone doing what is right in their own eyes” (Judges 21:25). Of course, these non-commandments are just a mockery of the commandments handed to us by our Lord and Creator. Another verse that sums up what these increasingly aggressive atheists in our culture are doing is this one:
Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! (Isaiah 5:20).

Ken Ham is a 63-year-old adult who had (I hope) a normal upbringing. The fact that he needs some higher authority to tell him what's right and what's wrong seriously troubles me.
The morality that God teaches us. Is it good because God says it's good or is it good all by itself?
If it's good because God says so, how do I know killing children will not be good even if God one day says it's good? Would God never say that? How do you know? Because He is good? How do you know?
If it's good all by itself, why can't we discover what's good without God's help? Are we somehow unable to see that so we need God to teach us? Then how do we know that what God teaches us is really good? Because he is good? Once again, how do you know?
@anothga
God says "follow everything I say because I am God. Even if I sound like a monster I am actually doing good."
Satan said "figure that shit out for yourself. I'm a snake, what do I care? Just don't follow the bearded guy, he's an arsehole."
Morality simply becomes “everyone doing what is right in their own eyes” (Judges 21:25).
As long as you're not hurting anyone else, I don't see why that's a problem.
Of course, that would make it harder for people like you to control everyone else's life. Which is a good thing.
Ken, if you need a book to tell you what is right or wrong - and that that book is your ONLY source of morality - then please stay the fuck away from my loved ones, you sociopathic piece of evil shit.
"(By the wayisn’t it interesting that they are doing what the devil has been doing since Genesis 3: trying to counterfeit what God has done?)"
"Morality simply becomes “everyone doing what is right in their own eyes” (Judges 21:25)"

So, you're making an argument against atheists, by referencing a book that literally none of us believe to be legitimate or authoritative? Tell me, does it hurt to be this stupid?
I find it interesting that when Christians are in charge, opposing views get suppressed. When they lose that power and their opposition speaks up, they claim the opposition is being "aggressive." I think it's a sign that they are losing.
Genesis 3?
That's where the snake tells Eve that if she eats the fruit, she will be able to tell good from evil?
There's some questions there.
Why were they punished if they could not, before eating the fruit, know that eating the fruit was wrong?
Why did god not want humans to be able to tell good from evil?
Why did the snake have better intentions for mankind than this "loving" god?
Why am I punished for the actions of someone 6,000 years ago?
If mankind gained knowledge of good and evil from eating the fruit, then why do we still need god to tell us ?
If the story is true, are you sure it's your god you should be worshiping? Wouldn't the evil one do everything he could to convince you he was the good guy? How do you know he hasn't succeeded?
So the serpent was Satan? Then why did God punish all snakes by removing their legs? All Satan did was take their form or possess one of them yet the snakes were punished for it.
Then again your God is all about disproportionate retribution.
"They have no basis for their moral views other than their own opinions, which can vary from atheist to atheist on certain matters!"
And you have no basis for your moral view other than your own opinion, which can vary from mythologist to mythologist on certain matters.
They have no basis for their moral views other than their own opinions.
Hi Ken;
Is the Biblical moral view good?
Is Satan bad?
How did you determine that?
Here's a couple:
If Satan is evil, how come the omnipotent gobs couldn't just destroy/eliminate him? Is gobs not omnipotent? Pretty much the "Problem of Evil"...
If Satan is punishing souls, isn't he doing gobs' will/work? Wouldn't that make him good? And if Satan hates gobs so much, why would he want to do anything like what gobs wants?
What absolute standard? Thou Shalt Not Kill. Well, not unless they live in an area that God has designed for His People, or unless she's not a virgin at her wedding night (impossible to determine, btw), or unless they work on the Sabbath, or...
Atheists use our evolved empathy, which helps us put ourselves in other people's shoes and nudges us to treat others as we want to be treated.
Morality simply becomes the Golden Rule, which predates Christianity, btw.
If you stop persecuting non-Christians, we will be less aggressive.
@Dr. Razark,
Man you hit the nail that time with me. I remember my mom telling me that shit when I was about 5, and I had those exact questions for her then. It was nonsense, and I got bullshit answers.
Then she went into the Ark Story and if I'd known there were such things as atheists I'd have signed up on the spot.
Her dad, my grandpa, was an evangelical preacher so she had a head full of it. I don't know why she held off for so long telling me these things, maybe Dad made her leave me alone until I could think a little bit...but anyway, thanks, Dad.
I care about doing the right thing when I can, and trying to pick the most moral option out of those available to me. Nobody held a gun to my head or threatened me with torture to get me to read about effective altruism and send the money that I chose to donate to the most cost-effective option.
As a rule of thumb, most people who want to do things will be interested in information on how to do those things. If someone wants to do morally correct things while being an atheist, then they will be interested in advice on how to do so, regardless of whether they believe following that advice is mandated by an entity that will brutalize them if they ignore the advice.
It's really depressing when I semi-agree with these assholes. I do, however, think it's mildly tacky and just slightly pathetic to have these "non-commandments" which only reinforce the concept of athiest pettyness and desire to have their own religious community that all sane people hold to be false. I have several Athiest friends, and I know that idea is a load of horseshit. But please, people, don't prove those idiots who believe that right!
Without an absolute standard given by our Creator, atheists have no foundation for their moral beliefs
Christians have the most relative morality possible as all it would take for an immoral act to become a moral one would be for god to say so.
Without an absolute standard given by our Creator
So, God is bound by that same standard then? Cool...
About this God who sends lying spirits to deceive people... that violates that standard. And if you dare say that what is evil for us is good if God does it, just remember...
Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil
Oh, and an Absolute Standard means ALL are held to it... no exceptions.
So let's see, a couple of quotes from your book of "absolute" morality:
"Thou shalt not kill"
"Then I heard the LORD say to the other men, "Follow him through the city and kill everyone whose forehead is not marked. Show no mercy; have no pity! Kill them all old and young, girls and women and little children. But do not touch anyone with the mark. Begin your task right here at the Temple." So they began by killing the seventy leaders. "Defile the Temple!" the LORD commanded. "Fill its courtyards with the bodies of those you kill! Go!" "
"Anyone who is captured will be run through with a sword. Their little children will be dashed to death right before their eyes. Their homes will be sacked and their wives raped by the attacking hordes. The attacking armies will shoot down the young people with arrows. They will have no mercy on helpless babies and will show no compassion for the children. "
So which is it? Don't kill, or kill them all, including children and babies?
Sounds like a real absolute standard, and a good basis for moral views.
Morality simply becomes “everyone doing what is right in their own eyes” (Judges 21:25). Of course, these non-commandments are just a mockery of the commandments handed to us by our Lord and Creator.
Somehow these two sentences made me like the 10 non-commandments better than I previously did.
"everyone doing what is right in their own eyes" is exactly how things work in America, and I decidedly would not be surprised if the term "non-commandments" was chosen specifically to mock the 10 commandments.
@angrycatholic
Since the Ten Commandments are held up by fundies as the basis of American Law/ Constitution a regular rebuttle is needed against it. I know you don't mean it this way but your "petty" remark plays into their "Atheists should just shut up and be happy we let them exist" mantra.
Everything in that stupid book is not only needing rebuttle but is completely fair game in a free society.
Their Ten Commandments: Mostly about self-enslavement to Christianity.
The Non-Commandments: Sensible suggestions to live by.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
