One of the newspappers over here (do i need to say its the Daily Mail?) ran a story about if you break one you will have to quickly open all windows and that because they could KILL.... when in truth they meant if you break one in a pretty much air tight room and inhale the gas you might feel a bit sick for a couple of hours.

The answer to what? Since they're about five times more efficient than their incandescent equivalents, I assume you don't mean any problem to do with fuel/energy consumption. As I understand it, they use more energy and materials to manufacture, but since they last about 10 times longer, that means the rate of manufacture should be 10 times less and thus reduce the amount of energy and material used for production. And if only people can be persuaded to recycle most of the ones that fail, mercury release shouldn't be a problem either. I'm curious, then - what's your objection?

While I have encountered a florescent tube that had vaporised mercury in it, it was in a physics labs looking at ultra violet light and I was given instructions to be careful with it and run away and set off the fire alarm should I happen to break it.
