[I know tons of Christians who never try to convert atheists to Christianity.]
Then either they don't really believe, or they just don't mind if you suffer in eternal hellfire and damnation.

Wrong. I know some too. I even like them. They respect other people's (dis)beliefs, instead of trying to coerce them into converting with threats of eternal hellfire and damnation.
Now STFU and go to your room.
Nope, those are the bearable respectful christians who aren't trying to impose their beliefs on people, you should learn to be like them so people won't just slam doors in your face or ignore you whenever you talk.
Everybody hates sanctimonious pricks.
there is very little if anything in the bible that can be interpreted as saying that good atheists go to heaven, so i agree completely with SmartMuffin that christians who tolerate atheism are either hypocritical, callous or just naive about what the bible actually has to say.
Well, actually I think those that don't preach or evangelize or go off the deep end are more true to their faith. They just live their faith and respect the rest of the human race. They accept that they aren't any better than anyone else.
Something fundies are incapable of.
In short, if your not a gay-hating, woman-hating, liberal-hating, democrat-hating, jew-hating, atheist-hating screaming asshole....then your headed for hell.
No wonder Christians churches are losing parishoners.
To tmr:
I'll absolutely agree that tolerance is a good and helpful thing, especially since its had a large part in ensuring that i havent yet been burned at the stake, but christianity only ever praised meekness because they were under the romans' heel for so many years that they had to 'own' that domination, and make it a virtue. Once they got power, the "have faith or die" evangelical aspect really comes out, because now they had the power to spread and enforce their beliefs that they once lacked. While its certainly much healthier than old christianity, new christianity focuses on harmony, love and peace to the point of contradicting essential doctrine. In reality, we really SHOULD have inter-religious tolerance; we dont need any hindu vs. catholic holy wars breaking out in the streets of big cities here in america, but at the same time, hindus are polytheists, (in a sense) idolaters, and non-believers in christ, making them a group of people 3x over hated by the bible. I can't blame people for wanting peace and to hold onto their religion at the same time, but hypocrisy bothers as much as, if not more than, fanaticism, and at least with the religious fundamentalists, they at least stay more-or-less true to the brutal and cruel documents that they have based their religion on.
Sorry to rant like that, though. I do think if theres any peace to be had in the future, its going to be through people shifting to watered-down, tolerant religions, since i dont see people abandoning their spirituality entirely anytime soon.
I have to admit that SmartMuffin is right.
Lets assume that you are a fundamentalist Christian who is 100% without any doubt convinced, that people who don´t believe in Jesus = god get thrown into the fiery realm of hell.
Then it would be your holy duty for altruisms sake, to do everything that is possible, to spare other people the fate of having to spend the rest of their afterlifes in hell, no matter how ridiculous or annoying your attempts at converting other people look.
I can blame fundamentalists for staying true to their faith in the literal truth of the bible despite reality shows us clearly that their faith is incorrect, I cannot blame fundamentalists however for the logical consequence of their faith, i.e. trying to convert as much other people as possible.
On the other hand I also cannot blame other people (for example non fundamentalist friends of fundamentalists) that they finally get so annoyed by the fundamentalists that they try to avoid their presence ;)
From a fundie point of perspective, that actually kinda makes sense, doesn't it? If I thought everyone who didn't believe was going to burn, I'd try to do something about it.
Whoever made religion definately managed to make it a no way out scenario. If you even doubt for a moment god's existance, you're sinning! So I guess that means to be able to convert, you can't be completely sure of your ideals then. Weird...
I have to admit I would hope somebody would do anything in their power to help me avoid an eternity of torture if that's what they truly believed I was in for. I just wish those people would be humble enough to consider the fact that they also may be wrong and there may be something real they need to be saved from. If you truly believe you can save somebody from something terrible you should do everything you can to do that, but there's a right way and a wrong way.
"Hey watch out, you're gonna get killed"
"How do you know that??"
"Look behind you, there's a train headed straight for you"
"Oh shit, thanks" ------- Correct.
"Hey watch out you're gonna get killed"
"How do you know that??"
"There's a train headed straight for you"
"I can't see a train anywhere, in fact I'm not even on any tracks. We're on the top floor of a skyscraper"
"I said, there's a train heading straight for you"
"How is that even possible ??"
"I don't know if I mentioned this but there's a train heading straight for you"
"How could a train even get up here ??"
"Train !! you bastard, It's a train you wicked bastard !!! train !!!" ------ Incorrect.
Or, maybe, they just are smart enough to realize that we've heard all this crap before, and will only despise you if you deem yourself superior enough to try to coerce us into thinking like you.
christians who tolerate atheism are either hypocritical, callous or just naive about what the bible actually has to say.
Or maybe they're actually decent human beings who remember that other people are human, too. Maybe they still have a tiny shred of empathy left, and understand that berating and threatening people constantly is a horrible way to gain friends, let alone converts.
Or they realise that trying to force it will only result in driving their target away and possibly earning them a black eye or a bloody nose if they REALLY push it. Like if you try to hold my door open with your foot when I say "no thanks" and go to close it? Hope you weren't big on walking anyway.
And for future reference, you are not a smart muffin. THIS is a smart muffin:
