A fundie asks:
Why are some non-Muslims are smart?
For example, Albert Einstein, who never did sujood in his life. Also, Mozart, Da Vinci, and so on. What do these people rely on to make their brains smart?

SOme of the answers are reasonable, but then we get this:

lol use your brain, you don't need to be a Muslim to be "smart" in matters of Dunya. The fact that they may not believe in one God means there lacking intelligence somewhere

This is unfortunate, in part because it mirrors an opinion I heard voiced several times last week at a fucking interfaith PEACE CONFERENCE!

And the whole time I was thinking, "But that doesn't answer my question about whether the Islamic Caliphate you want - and these are moderate Muslims who openly admit to their desire for a Caliph to govern across Islam - would also try to govern us?." (They believe such a figure could unify the disparate Muslim groups, of which there are 73 with Shia and Sunni dominating. The moderates recognize their fundies as being just as dangerous to them as to us. They announced to my question that one of their own at that mosque had been killed - "martyred" - a month earlier by another Muslim who considered him too Westernized.)

The problem here is we are not speaking the same language (and I'm not talking about English or Arabic or Farsi, etc.) I'm talking about the metalanguage different cultures speak; children grow up learning it without even realizing. And now that we and they are all adults, we're trying to find a way to bridge two cultural languages because the truth is neither side really seems to understand the other. We could speak and we could share, but there was some kind of barrier - languages just didn't fit together right. It's impossible to explain unless you find yourself surrounded by an entirely different culture where things that seem alien or even monstrous to you are seen by them as good whereas they see evil in your culture that you don't recognize as such.

Mathius_dragoon: I don't feel like attacking someone who clearly has such a tenuous grasp of the English Language. At this level of fluency I just wouldn't be sure if I was really addressing their viewpoint or not.

There's a meme that gets around: "Don't make fun of someone who struggles with English - it means they know another language." or words to that effect. I'm guessing this person has English as their second language... So making fun of that, or saying that their argument is invalid because of it does not mean that counter-arguments to them are automatically valid.

On the other hand, we can shred apart the argument and its logical flaws, and the general sentiment.

Some say it's smart to proof-read before you push the Send/Submit button. Not muz1234, though.

Education, work and life experience, questioning everything, seeking new knowledge; those are things that "make the brain smart".

Funny, Christianity says the same thing; that it turns fool into wise people. But most high-intelligence people and scientists and doctors and similar, are non-religious.

You're lacking intelligence somewhere else, dearie. Your post is barely coherent, and if you are partly aiming it towards non-Muslims, you ought to explain Muslim terms. The more intelligent you are, the more you realize how much you don't know, and that others don't know as much as you do. Being smug about being smart is a sign of lack of intelligence.
(And yes, I know I'm dancing or teetering on the line of smugness here too, but I try to stay on the right side, informative rather than smug).

I explain it by having people watch Abbot and Costello doing "who's on first". I always thought the conflict between Christian fundies and Americans was that kind of problem - they're talking about 2 different things but using the same words.

I read a muslim book(written in English) that had a section that I couldn't understand. After reading it a dozen times I realized the problem was

1. The phrase "mere materialism" was used to mean reality, and

2. The word "reality" was used to mean muslim theology.

This little bit of word redefining turned a page into incomprehensible gibberish until I figured it out.
