People can become an atheist for many reasons. It could be a result of anger, frustration, resentment etc. due to some unpleasant experience, relating to a church or religion (although its not likely you'll get an atheist to admit it). Another could be the individual's inability to rationalize the concept of God. We all have a tough time with that, even the clergy have difficulty with the logic. I don't think we can reasonably fault, any person for that, because I don't believe anyone can fathom infinaty or omnipotence and omniscience, we just can't corral those concepts in our minds, so we can see them clearly. The belief in God, in my opinion, is reliant upon reasonable probabilities and faith, not the rationalization of impossibly imagined concepts. Many atheists are just trying to be rational, with out applying the unknowns to the equation.
[Dear god: if you really exist, please, give me one sign by making irony and stupidity hurt. Ahmen!]

"although its not likely you'll get an atheist to admit it"
Yeah, because all atheists are keeping those things locked up and aren't at all open about things. Or alternatively atheists won't admit it because you just made it up .
"It could be a result of anger, frustration, resentment etc. due to some unpleasant experience, relating to a church or religion (although its not likely you'll get an atheist to admit it)."
Because it's not true.
Many atheists are just trying to be rational, with out applying the unknowns to the equation.
Which unknowns? I ask because if the equation works without these "unknowns" then it's pretty fucking likely there are no unknowns to apply to it.
"Many atheists are just trying to be rational, with out applying the unknowns to the equation."
What unknowns? You can't understand something, so you honestly think no one else can? Pretty laughably conceited, or else you must think the world works by 95% magic.
Funny, the only thing I find difficult to fathom about God is why would he give humans free will and the ability to do right and wrong, and then not only interfere, but impose massive and unnatural rules on us?
Um... isn't this a bit like shooting yourself in the foot: The belief in God, in my opinion, is reliant upon reasonable probabilities and faith, not the rationalization of impossibly imagined concepts
I'm not sure if I should be angered, offended, or saddened and disheartened that no one who ever comes up with crap like this ever provides the possibility of; "Arrived to the conclusion that there is/are no god(s) through intellectual reason."
I cannot speak for other atheists, however, I started becoming an atheist when I was quite young. I knew instinctively, that the "bible stories" were just that, stories, not unlike the Bros. Grimm, et al. I then went through a guilt phase, brought on by knowing in my heart that religion and god worship was a load of bunk, but, wanting to believe in something more. After much bible study, many years of searching, and even more bible study, I came to realize that what I knew as a child, I still knew. The stories are nice, sort of morality plays or explanations for the unexplainable.
The "unknowns" to which you refer, are what science is all about. It is not to attempt to know the unknowable, but, to attempt to know all that is knowable, and to test that knowledge. This testing is then reviewed by other scientists, and they try to replicate the tests. Once the tests have been replicated, a theory is developed to explain the results of the research. This theory is then, once again, peer reviewed by experts, whose duty it is to find the holes in the theory.
In short, Kravenhead, no matter how much you tart up your language, a goat fucker is still a goat fucker.
"People can become an atheist for many reasons. It could be a result of anger, frustration, resentment etc. due to some unpleasant experience,"
The unpleasant experience is the intense stupid emanating from fundies.
"even the clergy have difficulty with the logic."
All fundies have difficulty with logic.
"Many atheists are just trying to be rational, with out applying the unknowns to the equation."
Many fundies try to do logic applying only unknowns.
It is the result of finding that the Goat Sodomisers Guide to Brainwashing the Gullible (the Bible) is the biggest crock of shit ever invented by man.
I have no problems with any of the 2863 man-made one-true all-powerful gods of mans' history + of course the almost 4000 "gods" created on the internet games, it's just thier fan club that pisses me off.
BTW Kravenhead, my job of over 56 years is translating the ancient scripts that the "bible" was initially based.
It's full of shit.
I don't have any difficulty at all in rationalizing the concept of God.
God is a delusion. That is a concept which I can corral in my mind. Yes, I try to be rational. That way lies sanity. Unknowns I can deal with. Religious folk have to make up Gods, because they can't deal with unknowns.
How arrogant is that? If it's unknown, and you can't face that, make something up! Don't ever, ever admit that you are uncertain about anything. Daft, I call it.
fergus
When you have "unknowns", you try to find out what those unknowns are. Then, when you find out, they will be "knowns".
Is this hard to do?
You people just can't grasp the concept of someone who was raised as an atheist , can you!
I didn't BECOME an atheist. I always WAS an atheist.
Jews, Christians and Muslims use the same god. It is intriguing how everybody's god, who is the same god, tells them to kill the apostates, infidels and heretics ... which are the words many of them use to describe one another.
Clearly then, god wants people dead. Ergo: To be alive is to defy god. Life can be pretty good, very good in some cases. god is extremely jealous of that.
god wants people to be stupid as well. I'm inclined to think this is caused by god's low IQ and poor self-image.
I also think god is impotent, because there has been no verifiable evidence in modern times that would indicate any action on his part. So, either he is dead, he has given up, or he has found something else to fuckup.
I don't know if Krak-in-head has noticed that all significant advances in civilization have been traced to one enlightenment or another. Religions tend to work in the other direction.
You know, for a fundy this guy is fairly reasonable. Of course, "reasonable for a fundy" is about the same as "tall for a dwarf", but at least he's not making atheists out to be demon-worshipping pill-popping sex and murder maniacs. By the standards of the posts we get around here that's pretty progressive.
"Many atheists are just trying to be rational, with out applying the unknowns to the equation."
Most Christians are just trying to be rational while applying "Goddidit" all over the equation.
Eh.
The conjecture here is reasonably justifiable - shitty experiences with churches are a common reason for a lot of people to go "Fuck all y'all" and leave a religion. It's his refusal to admit that sometimes people just think it through and come to the conclusion that there isn't a God which is kind of amusing. But.
All in all, meh. Contains a circular argument and the usual logical fallacies, but not particularly fundie in the OMG WTF sort of way. 2.
It could be a result of anger, frustration, resentment etc. due to some unpleasant experience, relating to a church or religion (although its not likely you'll get an atheist to admit it). Another could be the individual's inability to rationalize the concept of God.
Or maybe because reason?
We all have a tough time with that, even the clergy have difficulty with the logic.
This is actually true, at least the clergy part. All the logical fallacies fundie preachers and Christian appologetics use are the living evidence of that.
For me, and many other atheists, it seems the more we learned about religion, the less sense it made and the more ridiculous it seemed. More atheists than fundies seems to have actually read the Bible.
"Many atheists are just trying to be rational"
Implying that being a theist means you're irrational then?
Yes, in that case, I'd much rather try to be rational.
"People can become an atheist for many reasons. It could be a result of anger, frustration, resentment etc. due to some unpleasant experience, relating to a church or religion (although its not likely you'll get an atheist to admit it)."
Many Atheists have admitted this, you just haven't listed the main "unpleasant experience" they site: Hypocracy and willful ignorance of it.
"even the clergy have difficulty with the logic." Because it has no logic, it's not even internally consistant.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
