I have read through the comments posted on crossroad.to, concerning anime/manga. I have to say this about most of the readers comments DEFENDING anime/manga: Do you (anime/manga fans) not realize that you are replacing life with this anime/manga hogwash? Going into excruciating detail about some FICTIONAL cartoon characters as if they were real? Don't forget, that anime/manga is directly associated with the anime/manga that portrays girls AND women as throwaway toys, only good for sex and abuse? I have seen some of the most brutal of the anime in years past, and, technically speaking, ALL anime/manga is of the same roots. You can't have one genre of anime, without realizing the extent and brutality of the others.

Anime is MAINLY for adults, evidenced by the storylines. Some anime is just plain BORING. Some is DISGUSTING. ALL of it is like watching soap operas: The gullible and reality-denying individual treating fictional characters as REAL, hence the troubling trend of little kids acting like they are gods, superheroes, wizards, and animals. Even if there WERE such a thing as CHRISTIAN anime, the roots would STILL be there. One could not perceivably "christianise" something that is inherently evil.

No matter how many of you DEFEND anime/manga, you NEED to realize that this genre of entertainment is nothing short of witchcraft, REGARDLESS of the messages/storylines presented. Anime, like other ungodly trappings in life, has been designed to rip you from the real world (God's creation), and stuff you into a state of mind that neither pleases God, nor will ever draw you closer to Him. Take it from someone who KNOWS about this topic. When you begin to blur the lines between good and evil (whether it's a little or a lot), you push yourself farther and farther into the chasm of depravity and insanity. Anime/manga is a product that is best flushed back into the cesspool from which it came.

There is so much fail and stupid here I don't even know where to begin. I guess I'll start by pointing out that anime and manga fans, just like fans of all fiction, know the difference between fiction and reality, and talk about characters as if they were real (itself a questionable assumption) just for fun, with the full knowledge that such characters do not exist in the real world. If you're only going after anime fans, Todd, then you are being a major hypocrite. Either that, or you have all the subtlety of a sack of bricks.

Secondly, there is some major ignorance about this medium. Though I am amazed that Todd H. has managed to avoid the so-called "Animation Age Ghetto" (and I must give him some credit for that) he fails totally and utterly when he claims that all anime is filled with nothing but violence, objectification of women, and porn. (But now we know just what kind of shows he is watching...) Japan is far behind the West when it comes to gender equality, and this is a bad thing, but that doesn't mean that Japanese people and their media have no respect for women.

As for it being witchcraft, that took this screed from "ordinary" fundie to batshit super-insane fundie. Not even the most diehard otakus think that any fantastic stuff shown in anime actually works. It has nothing to do with the occult. Do fundies really seriously conflate everything they don't like?! Because this is the most pathetic attempt I've seen to link anything to witchcraft.

The Great Mouse Detective has a stripper in it. Bambi battles another buck to the death for a female.

He also cracks a woman's head open in the start of the movie. In the Beatuy and The Beast Gaston is thrown off the castle and falls to his death. In All Dogs Go to Heaven Charlie has a nightmare where he is sent to hell and is tortured by demons. This movie also features animals smoking, drinking, and gambling.

Lets go back before anime, in Bambi, the title character fights another buck to the death for a female. In Snow White the witch falls off a cliff and is crushed by a boulder. So no, it's not only anime that is violent.

Interesting that you think even the most innocuous anime is terrible and it should be shunned in favour of the Bible. Parts of the Bible are so disturbing that even the medium of Lego cannot detract from its staggering brutality and callous disregard for humanity as a whole and individuals (often women) in particular. The only difference between the Bible and some of the more brutal anime is that while virtually everyone can tell that anime is fiction and therefore for entertainment purposes only, billions of people are entirely deluded and fully believe in the Bible.

It's easy to understand why fundies have always been so outraged against any work of fiction that contradicts their holy book even slightly, because the nature of religious fundamentalist is an inability to distinguish between reality and fantasy, and they naturally assume other people are the same way.

If Todd H. is so fearful of anime/manga and their influence on children, he should probably watch Neon Genesis Evangelion, the most Christian work of fiction ever created next to the bible itself. It's backstory has a global flood, contains lots of gratuitous violence and a group of nutcases that fuck over the entire planet by following the commands of some ancient texts, the cast are the most screwed up people imaginable, angels actually look like angels instead of the fluffy-winged pansies Medieval European painters invented, and anyone claiming to understand the ending is either lying or just as crazy as the person who wrote it. Fundies would love it.

Also, some of the most powerful female characters I've ever encountered have been in an anime or a manga, and even if they're sexualised they STILL managed to be complex and interesting (as Revy and Yoko can attest). Indeed, despite Japan's horrible sexism, in general its fiction is more fair to women than that produced by other nations.

If you have a rock-solid opinion that a form of art can't be improved, then you're just trolling. Because if you hold the opinion that something can't be improved, then you gain nothing from pointing out the flaws. The only option left would be to quit criticising these "evil" things and let the evil speak for itself - because if something is irredeemably evil, people just might notice that on their own.

But as usual, fundies tend to be wrong on this. If anyone happens to stumble on, say, an anime with actual artistic merit, their point is invalid and they should perhaps reconsider it.

I mean, I understand why they'd hate on anime/manga of all things, considering that a lot of popular manga/anime themes (hentai, harem, reverse harem, magical girl, girls with guns, yaoi/shounen-ai, yuri/shoujo-ai, shotacon, lolicon) and many elements and ideas of the more popular ones (demons, reincarnation, inanimate objects having "souls" i.e. Beyblade, Yu-Gi-Oh! cards, etc. violence/gore, nudity *gasp!* and religious themes and symbolism) are like the epitome of evil in the eyes of many fundies. That last one, Manga Messiah, I actually own. Not kidding. XD My mom saw it somewhere, don't remember where, and just because it had "manga" in the title she thought I'd like it. She gave no thought to the fact that a) I'm an atheist (and technically so is she!), and b) The book is hardly worthy of the name "manga", as it was clearly written and drawn (badly) by Americans and the art is crappy even compared to the crappiest of American cartoons, let alone compared to manga/anime. It's a "manga" in name only. Also, it's heavily Bowdlerized. HEAVILY.

I will admit that it seems like a lot of female characters are a little too interested in getting married and becoming housewives for one of the male characters instead of simply pursuing whatever it is they started their series doing, which irritates me. But this is simply a cultural reflection. However - throwaway toys? Only good for sex and abuse? What series have YOU been watching?? Most anime series' depictions of women aren't anywhere near that.

Thank you. And yet, one of the things that's cool about it is that it often times has young people (13-25) as the main characters. The way these young characters are written isn't very patronizing, either, which is why I think so many young people are attracted to the medium - the depictions of themselves are not negative, and the shows don't talk down to them. In short, young people are treated with respect by the shows that they are watching. The protagonist has struggles coming of age just like you, but he/she can still fly a gundam or fight Queen Beryl's minions or locate crystal shards, which means that you probably could, too.

Take it from someone who KNOWS about this topic.

I honestly wouldn't hold my breath on that one, if I were you. History is replete with examples of how Christianity (along with every other monotheistic religion)has been used to legitimize various actions against fellow human beings that can easily be construed as "evil".

Think the Spanish Inquisition, for instance, or maybe the Salem Witch Trials. Those are actually fairly minor examples, off the top of my head.

The rest of your post is an almost classical example of syncretism: the attempt to reconcile disparate or contrary beliefs, often while melding practices of various schools of thought.

Decades ago, Pat Robertson - via showing "Superbook" on his Christian TV channel - effectively pioneered anime on US TV, popularising the genre there (even before the influence of the likes of Fred Patten & Carl Macek). America is the biggest consumer market for manga/anime outside Japan. Yes, that's right Toddy-boy. A Christian is directly responsible for Yuri/Yaoi/Ecchi/Hentai in the US.

Just been reading the site this quote's linked to, and it makes me wonder - as one of the anime series condemned by such being "Pokemon" - if the webmaster is a Slowpoke him/herself? When was the last time this site was updated?! Or mayhaps it's better if he/she is, and hasn't kept abreast of anime post-2000 (I mean - "Sailor Moon", "Dragonball Z"?! Their living under a stone levels are OVER 9000! XP )

For a start, one of the underlying motifs in "Kiddy Grade" (2002): immortality. As an 'ability'-user (C, then later G-class) in the GOTT, Eclair is never allowed to die, but is reborn in new bodies (many times in the past, re. flashbacks to her former lives; most of which were bloody & brutal, used by her Nouvlesse/GU masters for their own nefarious ends; thus Alv turning against the Nouvlesse). The concept of eternal life without 'Spiritual salvation'; no latest series of "Torchwood" required.

Then more recently, "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" (2006). In which a high school girl - without even realising it - is God.

Frankly, Toddy-boy, 'anime/manga that portrays girls AND women as throwaway toys, only good for sex and abuse' is the least of your problems. Three words: "Neon Genesis Evangelion".

While I've seen lots of catgirl cosplayers at anime conventions (mostly Felicia, from the Capcom videogame "DarkStalkers" and generic characters; non-series specific ones) I've yet to see anyone do similarly as Lotte & Aria, the Lieze Twins from "Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's" ;_; (*grump*). However, at an anime convention in the US several years ago, I had the privilege of meeting a delightful lady who was cosplaying as Eclair (from "Kiddy Grade"); posing here with her lipstick whip:

Toddy-boy here had better not watch the currently-airing in Japan anime series "Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon" then, if he knows what's good for him.

And not just for the Fanservice neither, re. the female characters, most of whom are... 'generously endowed', to say the least (and not just in the breast departments; some have hairstyles that'd make Vidal Sassoon want to commit seppuku!). Nor for one character who is the first 'Reverse-reverse-reverse trap' [/'Dropped a Bridget on him']. No, it's this factor:

Now, I love a story/plotline that I can really get my mental teeth into (thus "Babylon 5" is one of my all-time faves), but to compare "KSnH" to "B5" would be like trying to make a "Janet & John" reader seem like "Dune". Apart from the basic scenario plotline of "Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon", frankly I'm just going along for the ride; but the scenery's pretty! (imagine "Final Fantasy" or "Phantasy Star" turned up to 11). Toddy-boy's brain would Divide By Zero if he watched a few episodes of such!

The 'light novels' that "KSnH" are based on... well, let's just say that one volume of such could stop the door of Fort Knox's vault. "KSnH" as 'Light Novels'?! The phrase 'Oh, the irony!' exists for a reason.

Moral: Just as an iPod is a digital media player, not all media players are iPods, just because Hentai exists, doesn't mean that all anime/manga are Hentai.

PROTIP: The word 'Hentai' is now in the latest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. And the professors, scholars, academics, etymologists & lexicographers of the OED are ultra-deadly Serious Business when it comes to new additions to (certainly research for) the definitive lexicon of the English language.

I do not KNOW what you are TRYING to say in that SENTENCE. Actually, I DO know EXACTLY what you are trying to SAY. It is an idea KNOWN as "ALL ANIME IS NAUGHTY TENTACLES", and it is MISTAKEN. Yes, there is an adults-only SUB-GENRE of anime/manga called HENTAI, often featuring explicit SEXUAL content, and OCCASIONALLY rape or abuse. But the mere FACT that hentai like that EXISTS does not MEAN that ALL anime -or even all hentai- dehumanizes WOMEN. Anime HAS many strong female CHARACTERS that do not take KINDLY to perverts.
