I never said he was a muslim. My argument has been that he has muslim fathers. And that IS the truth. That will set the Arab street on fire, if the US elects this man as president. They only need to hear that the US elected the "son of a muslim". We all know how they act...they don't need the truth to set them off. They construct their own truths. Anyone educated on islam knows that.
THAT does not make us look "crackpottish". Ellison, a muslim MN congressman DID swear in on the Quran. That should have never happened.

Yeah, he swore in on Thomas Jefferson's Quran. You know, Founding Father, third president, writer of the constitution, etc..
Of course! Ellison should have been sworn in on a book in which he takes no personal meaning. That would have made so much sense. Because swearing in doesn't actually mean anything, right? It's just this thing we have them do to look all official-like.
If anything, as a Christian, I'm pretty sure that swearing on a Bible when you're not of a Jewish or Christian faith would be blasphemy. Not that I'm going to insist on legislating that, but it would make me uncomfortable.

As for swearing, refresh my memory as to what Jesus said on the subject.
@#522362: No people should be swear on something that is sacred to them to uphold the laws of our nation. It makes sense because the book is sacred to them it means that if they are devout in their belief then they won't brake their promise (in theory anyway). This doesn't mean that only religious people can be elected, since I'm sure plenty of us here have some book that we would consider worthy of taking a vow on, but it is basically a symbolic contract to the people. The fact that Christians only want people to swear on the Bible, whether or not they believe in it, just shows want length they are willing to go at the force their religion on people.
To the fundie: I believe that people outside America hearing we elected the son of a Muslim will America as a progressive nation and will probably respect us more, especially after 8 years of Bush.

And yet that didn't "set the Arab street on fire", as you put it. Your hypothesis fails.
One thing is true. No one should swear into a US Government office on a religious text, and that includes the bible. However, since some are sworn in with the bible, a non-christian should be allowed to be sworn in with his religious book. That is what freedom of religion is about.

Yes, just like the streets of Ireland were set on fire when John F. Kennedy became president. The IRA destroyed Big Ben in vengeance! The pope gleefully pranced around the Sistine Chapel and gave everyone headaches with his version of Handel's "Hallelujah!" Man, they don't care if his father was a muslim or not. The moment he's not, and the moment his father was RAISED muslim, but became atheist later on, their concerns are rather to "kill the infidel"
Apparently you're not a guy educated in Islam. When Carlos Menem converted to Catholicism and was elected president of Argentina, no muslim country gave a damn. Moreover, they do know he's candidate, and they don't give a damn. Maybe they're intelligent enough to know that religion is not genetic, specially if you haven't seen your father since you're two years old. And anyway, if they misreact so much, it's their problem, not ours.
If you can swear on Bibles, Muslims can swear on Qurans. They're not all that different. And besides, the words of the oaths don't promise anything TO the holy book. They just HOLD the holy book to look good in photo ops.
I am now also firmly convinced that people capable of using the simple pronoun "they" as if it is a racial slur exist. I just wish I knew why.
