I think religion should have absolutely no bearing on the passing of laws and electing of officials, etc.

THE COUNTRY WASN'T FOUNDED ON RELIGION!! Only a couple colonies were, if you can call c.100 people a colony.
Lots of people came to America for religious freedoms yes, but most came on charters and for money.
The country was FOUNDED on FREEDOM.
