Where Did the Technology Come From?

Some claim that for Cain to go to the land of Nod and build a city he would have required a lot of technology that must have already been in that land, presumably developed by other "races."

However, Adam and Eve's descendants were very intelligent people. Jubal made musical instruments such as the harp and organ (Genesis 4:21), and Tubal-Cain worked with brass and iron (Genesis 4:22).

Because of intense evolutionary indoctrination, many people today think that our generation is the most intelligent that has ever lived on this planet. But just because we have jet airplanes and computers, it does not mean that we are the most intelligent. Modern technology results from the accumulation of knowledge. We stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us.

Our brains have suffered from 6,000 years of the Curse (since Adam). We are greatly degenerated compared with people many generations ago. We may now be nowhere near as intelligent or inventive as Adam and Eve's children. Scripture gives us a glimpse of what appears to be great inventiveness from the beginning.

The electricity to power the computer you're using? Michael Faraday.

The phone lines & telecommunications system you're using to connect to the internet? Alexander Graham Bell, and Arthur C. Clarke. The latter being an Atheist.

The internet you're usuing to post on Ruptured Retards? The US Departmemt of Defence, for creating ARPANET. And for making such easier to use? Tim Berners-Lee - a Unitarian Universalist.

The operating system(s) you have installed in your computer(s)? Windows, by Bill Gates - an Atheist. Apple OSX Snow Leopard, by Steve Jobs - an Atheist. Linux, invented by Linus Torvalds - an Atheist.

And that very computer you're using in the first place? You have to thank for that, the father of modern computing, Alan Turing - an Atheist and a homosexual.

There you go - all the reasons you'll ever need to stop using that computer, nay, leave your house filled with all those mod cons, and go live in a cave.

Bollocks. Messrs. Faraday, Bell, Clarke, the DoD, Berners-Lee, Gates, Jobs, Torvalds and Turing would like a word with you.

Only thing that made sense in that statement is the whole 'shoulders of giants' thing. That's pretty much a well-accepted fact.

But considering what we can do now, I have a hard time believing that we have slowly been getting dumber over 6,000 years (or more, considering the Earth is WAY older than that). Considering what we have accomplished technologically in the last 100 years alone, if the sons of Adam were way smarter than us, and they DID live almost 1000 years each, logically we should have robots, flying cars, teleporters, and jetpacks by now, no matter how dumb we've gotten.

So now I pose my own question: If you are right, then WHERE ARE MY JETPACKS?!?

Actually our brains are about 3% smaller than those of people living ten or fifteen thousand years ago. However the sophistication of the tools, art and culture of our ancestors matches that or modern humans who still live without the benefits of technology. They and we are equals.

We are not the smartest, but the most accomplished. Our accumulation and dissemination of knowledge elevates us, but is based on the achievements of those who went before; with each generation casting its pebble of learning onto the pile, we have built a mountain. It would be presumptuous of us to think that we were the mountain builders simply because our pebble is currently the highest.

In certain respects, it seems that humans are consistently becoming more intelligent, which would suggest the current generation may indeed be the most intelligent. This explains IQ inflation, for example. I'm of the opinion that this is purely environmental, as our culture has certain standards of intelligence and fosters these, but Stephen Fry has (via QI) given some interesting notes on the topic: Apart from IQ inflation, it also seems that a few centuries ago (wish I could remember details!), the ability to read in silence was considered miraculous. Reading without speaking the words aloud was unheard of, at least in Europe. Obviously, if you look at some of Europe's advances in the last millenium, its inhabitants were intelligent - but standards always change. In short, I agree with you, but I daresay if I did a swap with someone from the Middle Ages we would both seem incredibly stupid to the people we met.

@Anon-e-moose: Maybe cheating, but V-Ray (ultraviolet laser optical discs) is predicted to be the next standard format and is already in R&D. I would personally not be surprised if USB flash drives hit the market in a big way soon. Buy a whole TV series on a USB stick! Brilliant!
