It's simple to get a fairly accurate measurement. Count the generations (32 years average between generations) from Jesus back to Adam. Keep in mind the preflood extended ages, and voila. You have a fairly accurate estimate of 6500 years. Science has honed it to 6854 years using radiometric dating.
