Many of the Founding Fathers were Freemasons, and Romney, the next candidate you're going to vote for, belongs to a cult that stole many of its stupid secret temple rituals and symbols from the Freemasons, right down to the secret handshakes they think they'll need to get into heaven and the "sacred" masonic symbols on their magic underwear.

@sandchigger: Actually, you have to be a Freemason to join the Shrine - it's a group made up of high level Freemasons. IIRC, you have to be a 32 level Freemason to become a Shriner (my grandfather was one, and my ex-husband was invited to join the Shriners)
Oh, and atheists can't join. You don't have to be Christian, but you DO have to have belief in a "higher being"...

That you're willing to lie your ass off? It certainly does. There are no group prayers in most Masonic lodges. There is often a moment of silent prayer during which the Mason may pray to whomever they like.

The only issue I have with the freemasons is that they don't allow atheists to join. You don't have to be especially Christian, but you have to express belief in a god. Not that I care to join or anything.

Actually, Shriners support three hospitals in the U.S. which tend to severely injured children with no regard to the child's ability to pay. They are neither more nor less boring than any gathering of 60+ year old men, but do do an awful lot of good with their fezes and parade antics.

Ugh this shit again. Freemasonry is basically just religion for people who don't see the need to kill people over the specifics of their faith, and who are interested in actually studying the myths and mysteries that all modern religions are based on. If you don't like religion, fine, don't join. But all idiots like this do is prove that they are so intolerant that the idea of a group that rivals their claim to being religious or spiritual, but doesn't hate anyone unlike them, is "evil" and "satanic".
PS, the majority of Masons are Christian. My grandfather was one. Increasingly, the younger generations of Masons include a lot of neo-pagans, even a few so-called satanists, but the one thing that is incompatible with freemasonry is atheism.

exactly, I posted earlier in this thread (post #1407552 ) as I mentioned earlier I was born with both feet severely deformed, every doctor my mother took me to basically said "buy her a wheel chair stick her in it and get her used to it for the rest of her life" then my mom came across the El Jebel Shrine, took me five years of intense surgeries but I can walk now
they also helped with some other congenital defects I had in my eyes and my spine (I was severely messed up physically)
because of this, badmouthing the Shriners is a SEVERE hot button for me
Man these conspiracy theorists crack me up. I grew up in and around the Masonic order, and the best way I can describe it is that it is mostly a social club for old people who believe that it gives greater moral meaning to their lives. In practice 99% of they do is squabble amongst themselves over things such as dues, dinner, and internal politics. Between all of that they do a lot of fundraising for various charities.
Also, just to clarify a few things: You do have to be a fully-initiated (3rd degree, or "Master Mason") member of the Freemasons in order to become a Shriner. In years past you had to belong to one of the "expansion pack" organizations, either the Scottish Rite (receiving the 32nd/33rd Degrees), or the York Rite (joining both the Royal Arch Lodge, and the "modern-day" Knights Templar), however this is no longer the case. There are persistant rumors that the Shrine may one day drop it's Masonic membership requirement altogether, but this has yet to be taken seriously at any of their national conventions.
To join, you can't be an atheist in standard British/American Masonry, though the French Grand Orient and it's descendants think otherwise. I am unusual in that when I joined at 18, I was still a religious church-going Christian, and at 19 I had a bit of faith crisis. These days when I do go to Lodge I tell prying members that I am a Humanistic Deist, but the truth is that I believe as much in God as most of you. I like the organization a lot, I just wish it was a little more open minded with regards to women and the non-religious. After my Dad and Grandpa have shaken off the mortal coil, I'll probably transfer my membership into a French/Continental Lodge.

Attributing any radical Islamic motives to the Shriners is pants-on-head crazy. It's a social club of mostly White, Christian men who dress like clowns and drive silly cars in parades to raise money for children's burn hospitals. Yeah, they're practically Satan incarnate.
Masons don't pray individually in lodges. They have group prayers, and since (most) Masonic groups admit Jews, Muslims and Deists to their ranks, generic God prayers avoid sectarian bickering.
There are some Masonic subgroups that are Christian-only and emphatically so. The Knights Templar are the biggest example. They have big celebrations on Easter weekend and Ascension Day, as well as the feast days of St. John the Evangelist and John the Baptist. One of the more active Knights I know is an Anglican priest.

There are millions of rituals people are involved in that have no religious context, there's no reason to consider Football or Nascar noble and just because some waste of time priest leads you in the same damn prayer you say every day.
