Perhaps the link is more simple.....academics hate their jobs, they are geeks to they hate their social life, and this self-loathing creates their doubting of God?

Strike THREE!!! You'rrrrrrre OUT!
Why would self-loathing create doubts about God? Usually, the worse someone thinks his life is, the more likely he is to want to believe he's going to get his turn in the afterlife to laugh at all the cool, successful people who laughed at him in this one.
I'm an Oxford student, so I talk to career academics all the time on a one-to-one basis.
Trust me, they love their jobs for the most part (the ones that teach aren't too fond of marking, but otherwise). You have to to put up with being paid less than your skills are worth.
EDIT: I'm friends with many physicists (of which I'm one), chemists, mathematicians and computer scientists. I'm willing to bet they all have better social lives than you.
At least these "geeks" you speak about would have far better grammar than yours. Besides, I love brainy, "geeky" guys. All that intelligence makes them sexy to me.
Dumb guys... well, not so much. In fact, not at all.
Loser.
You Christians know all about self-loathing, don'tcha?
EDIT: Dammit, Doctor Whom beat me to it.
This is what passes for "simple" for this guy?
If hating your life should make you doubt God, the folks over at Rapture Ready must be in for a real surprise.
Or, maybe, more intelligent people understand the evidence better and rely on rational though instead of mythology.
Did you ever think of that?
Actually, those "geeks" are more likely to be happy, well-adjusted people than you.
So, how's God enriched your life?
not all academics are geeks, they're just much, much smarter than you. You're probably the person that bullied them in school because you feel intimidated by their knowledge. That said, this guy was more than likely homeschooled.
academics hate their jobs
Oddly enough, this is the assertion to which I take the most offense. "Academics" spend many years in college earning a degree so they aren't limited to jobs they don't like. Instead, they're (we're) much happier being writers, scientists, doctors, et cetera, et cetera.
Yeah, academics hate their jobs so much, they spend over 5 years studying (that's kinda like what you're supposed to do at homeschool), to get those jobs in the first place.
Of course, it's more likely that you just don't like them earning 10 times as much as you do, while having friends and being invited to parties.
Project much?
Maybe we shouldn't take our view of 'geeks' from 1970's frat house movies. Most 'geeks' I know are quite happy, and I work in IT.
As far as academics, they spend their life in pursuit of knowledge, what could be better than that? Well maybe a better paycheque...
Yeah, why study for eight years to have an academic job that you'll hate, when you can have a low-income no-prospect routine job that you'll love.
Oh, wait, that makes no sense, whatsoever.
All intelligent people are unsocial geeks? You need some social skills if you are to survive 4-10 years in university, stupid.
Academics are one of the best-represented careers among my friends and family. And while yeah, everyone has "I hate my job" (or, more often, "I hate my incompetent business-school-graduate dean"), I don't know any who would ever choose to do anything else.
No, it's much simpler than that. Smart people doubt God because there is absolutely no evidence for his existence, and the manner in which he is portrayed makes him a ridiculous fairy tale character that is impossible to take seriously on a rational (as opposed to faith-based) basis.
Confused?
