No, the ever-increasing population problem, mixed with the ever-increasing costs of raising children are what contributed to declining birth rates. But even then, our population continues to grow and we're not in danger of becoming extinct. I hate when idiots point out lower birth rates and then run around in a panic claiming we need more babies or else we'll all just disappear.

Birth rates decline pretty predictably following the decline of infant mortality rates which means that couples no longer have to have many children in the hope that a couple will survive beyond the age of five.
