Not at all, in fact it's making a considerable contribution to the decline of civilization.
Yes, the dark ages were just cool, weren't they?
- Get up in the morning from the forest and rebuild your hut that was burned the night before by the church because you couldn't pay your taxes.
- Bury all your relatives who died the night before of various plagues.
- Toil in the fields for long hours for your lord/church.
- Go to church and get told you're all evil and going to hell anyway (but remember to pay your taxes and slave in the fields).
- Eat a tiny meal that just keeps you from starving to death because the church has taken the rest in tithes.
- Kill a few cats because they're the source of evil and they spread the plague.
- And on a cold evening throw a couple of heretics on the fire to keep warm (but make sure you accuse your neighbour before he accuses you or it might be your family on the fire tonight).

Then why is it practically all pre-scientific religions seemed to do nothing but whinge and gripe about how awfully corrupt and evil and degenerate the world and the people in it were, and how it would all be better when you died and left it behind?

Were it not for modern science-which produced, among other things, the ultraound-my birth defect would not have been caught and I would probably be dead, as well as possibly my mother. So not only would I not be here, but my brother and sister would never have been born and my dad would be very sad.
