I'll take it one step further...
Anyone who is a christian must be, by definition, mentally ill.
welp.
nothing to add here...
Fish. Barrel. Shotgun.
That is all.
In all fairness, it's not stereotyping Christians but more about mentally ill people.
The statement "A lot of x are y" is not the same as "A lot of y are x."
As a mentally ill non-christian, I have just one thing to say: Fuck you.
It's perfectly possible to be mentally ill and still manage to have a view on life that meshes with reality and is not dependent on lies and delusions.
@JohnTheAtheist: As a completely sane Christian, I must object to your statement.
Also, this isn't like shooting fish in a barrel. It's like shooting fish in a barrel with the Mythbusters' car-mounted machine gun!
Wow. I don't want to poke fun at people who have a mental illness, so I won't say anything...
But I have noticed a lot of paranoia and people with issues at RR... So, um... Yeah.
Not funny. Sudden adoption of fundamentalist religious belief is a symptom of very serious manic depression; it's a reality that blights a lot of lives and can lead to suicide. It's a way of divorcing oneself from reality, and, if you imagine the mixture of utter (self) hatred and blind euphoria a lot of fundies go through, it's perhaps not surprising.
P.s.- no, it's perfectly possible to be rationally and moderately religious. Not the same.
his full post:
I have schizoaffective disorder which is similiar to bi-polar although I have always felt that bi-polars have it easy compared to us schizoaffectives. I take medication for my illness religiously because I have learned that I become completely insane if I don't. With medication I can act fairly normal although there are side effects. I just started a new medication that is better than the old one I was on. I'm losing weight and am less asocial.
Because I am mentally ill, I have done things and made choices that have been extremely damaging to myself and my reputation. I have done things in the past that I couldn't help which people simply didn't understand and they shunned me for it. On the other hand, I am more intelligent than most people. I have found that mentally ill people tend to be more intelligent/creative than "normal" people. I have several online friends who are mentally ill and they are all gifted in some way.
As a mentally ill Christian, I have two stigmas to live with. I have found that God seems to take special care of me, I guess because I am disabled after all. I have seem him do amazing things on my behalf. I've been saved a few times from very bad situations through what I believe to be divine intervention. I have not had an easy life. My illness has always kept me from being a successful person. However, I am currently working on a project that I believe will blow people away someday.
Anyway, whether to take meds or not is one of the big decisions every mentally ill person must make. I take them because if I didn't i'd probably be dead or in prison. If you can cope without meds than by all means you don't need to take meds.
I'm actually glad that I am mentally ill because I have noticed that a lot of mentally ill people are Christians. I'm also glad that living with adversity for much of my life has made me a much more down to earth person than I might have ended up as if I had been a successful person who got everything I wanted really easily.
<gets off soapbox>
I thought Poe, but after looking at the rest of the post... Well, if you say so, Jsmythe. If you say so.
"I'm also glad that living with adversity for much of my life has made me a much more down to earth person than I might have ended up as if I had been a successful person who got everything I wanted really easily"
Loooooooooooosssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer!
This is a bit tangential, but I continue be be struck by the fact that hearing voices is generally considered to a sign of psychopathology, unless those voices are of a religious nature encouraging, inter alia, the invasion of Iraq.
I have noticed that a lot of mentally ill people are Christians.
And vice versa.
I am currently working on a project that I believe will blow people away someday.
Uh oh... call the bomb squad.

Reading the other posts in that threat, I am a little frightened for the OP's safety. Some of the drivel they are suggesting concerning mental health treatment is horrifying.
Really? Most of their advice seemed pretty solid to me. Then again, I stopped reading at Jsmythe's post...
@#1024865:
Also, this person has been on their boards since April 2007. For those who are all very quick to call Poe: Do you actually read the quote in context before doing so?
In this case I must admit I didnt, it was just too 'in a nutshell' for me to say anything else. Of course this is the very essence of poes law. I couldnt tell truth from satire.
When you read the whole thing it is pretty obvious that it is not a POE. It also makes some of the comments here appear to be in bad taste. Really, this is an example of cherry picking, that line is sort of taken out of context.
Although I have to admit "I am currently working on a project that I believe will blow people away someday" is a scary fucking statement.

Was that an awesome episode or what? "There's no kill like OVERkill!"
You said it, we didn't. Well, okay, we said it thousands of times, but you're just validating it.
"I have noticed that a lot of mentally ill people are Christians"
You said it, we didn't! And thus, by definition, they're admitting that Richard Dawkins (loved ya on BBC Radio 5 today!) is the sanest person on the planet. As are everyone on FSTDT. I can see one of two things happening here, ladies & germs:
1- Jsmythe gets his arse b& from Rupture Retards faster than he can say '2nd Coming' by Buzzardnuts for his unforgivable heresy. Or:
2- Dividing By Zero admits defeat like the pussywhipped bitch it is, and is raped by the 'Big Crunch' of honesty by Jsmythe.
Wow, this should almost be on a t-shirt or something.
But, I really do pity the OP after reading the quote in its original context. Mental illness is a struggle to deal with, whether you're the person who has it or a person who's dealing with a person who has it. Thank god the OP has realized the importance of taking their medication on a regular basis, as that's at least half the battle.
I'm not sure I like the fact that you're a fundamentalist, OP, but kudos to you for getting some legitimate treatment for your mental illness. *salute*
"I'm actually glad that I am mentally ill because I have noticed that a lot of mentally ill people are Christians."
'In technical terminology... he's a loon.'
Dr. Silberman, "The Terminator"
Rebuttal: There are a lot of "mentally ill" people on FSTDT.
"Mentally ill" is a rather large brush to paint with. It refers to everything from depression to autism to who the fuck knows what.
Cue "atheists are retards" in 3...2...1....
now i think i understand y people become religious
its a way to end ur life here on earth, an emotional suicide
...kinda sad really
"I'm actually glad that I am mentally ill because I have noticed that a lot of mentally ill people are Christians."
And I'm actually glad that I am sane because I have noticed that everyone I know (certainly in FSTDT) that are sane are Atheists & Non-Fundies.
"I'm actually glad that I am mentally ill because I have noticed that a lot of mentally ill people are Christians."
Delusion = insane
Two or more people sharing the same delusion = religion
Honesty. So refreshing in a fundie.
Confused?
