On a Christian beheading an ISIS prisoner:
I must confess now that the old fleshy man in me thinks (dancing smiley)

"We are better then that."
does exactly what ISIS does.
"We are still better then that as we worship the right God.
I have no problem with that. There is an old saying that turnabout is fair play. Anyone in ISIS deserves the kind of treatment that ISIS dishes out. ISIS has murdered well over 100,000 people. It is the flip side of the "Golden Rule": "What you do unto others is likely to be done unto you, so watch what you are doing."

I agree, but I'm not a member of a religious group which professes to be better than everyone else and follows a man who professed pure pacifism. For a Christian to celebrate the murder of anyone, even an ISIS member, seems pretty darn hypocritical.
I'm pretty sure either "you" would be feeling that way because neither is inseparable from the other.
@DFM:
The Golden Rule doesn't have a flip side. There's no amendment saying "so if they barbarically torture & murder your people then it's perfectly acceptable to barbarically torture & murder them right back". When they treat you in a way you don't particularly appreciate, the spirit of the "rule" is that you should continue to treat them as you'd prefer them to treat you. It's certainly true that we sadly don't live in a world where we can always follow this philosophy (and expect to survive) but that is immaterial to the philosophy beyond explaining certain deviations.
I'll admit that it doesn't satisfy the baser parts of human nature but that's why we invented the first-person shooter. Now you can have the satisfaction of both taking the high road AND blowing someone's goddamned head off & flipping the bird at the fountaining neck stump (Brutal DOOM works well for this purpose).
We should get out of there and let the Shiite fundies and Sunni fundies cut each others heads off. We should cut off their oil supply so they have no money for bullets that way they have to do it up close and personal.
It leaves the christian fundies untouched, but maybe we can get the Catholics and protestants to follow the muslim example.

Certainly, the Golden Rule has a flip side. The Golden Rule is a mere codification of the principle that people generally treat others the way that they are treated. Not always, but usually.
The Golden Rule is an acknowledgement of that fact. It says, in reality, if you want to be treated well, treat others well.
Taking revenge against gross violation of the Golden Rule preserves the Golden Rule by the process of selection. If one treats homicidal terrorists with kindness, that merely convinces them that we are idiots and encourages them. If we treat them the way that they treat others, then we are delivering the message of the Golden Rule by enforcing it. When we permit terrorists to continue living, sooner or later they will wreak more mayhem.
The Golden Rule is not some arbitrary benevolent idea, it is an evolutionary adaptation to survival. It only works when retribution for its violation is enforced. Failure to do so is a negative survival trait.

The rest of the thread is actually commendable. They opposed what happened. I have to give RR credit for that.
And while I say the Daesh prisoner deserved it, it is hypocritical a Christian calls for it
Personally, I think the morality of an action is the same no matter who does it and who it's done to.
So in this case, I hold the Christian in just as much contempt as I do ISIS. I would hold them in just as much contempt if they were an atheist, too. Killing a prisoner is wicked when they do it, and it's wicked when we do it, too.

I wouldn't. The only thing those RR posters have proved is that stopped clocks are right twice a day.

I wasn't saying people shouldn't defend themselves or even that they shouldn't use deadly force to do it. I was saying that sinking to their level and engaging in beheadings, torture and the like just makes a monster of us, too. If someone has to die then they have to die. That's simply the way it is. What that's not is an excuse to needlessly draw their death out and become them. It may satisfy a baser part of our nature but it also leaves a mark on us, both individually and collectively.

I concede that you are correct. Thanks.
Wow. Just... wow. That's exactly the kind of thing we DON'T need. We don't want to be the monsters they say we are, and more importantly, we don't want to be the monsters that THEY are. Be careful when you fight monsters, the abyss stares back and all that.
We have to be better, or nothing is ever going to get better.
