Then why do atheists only quote the parts in the bible that describe God's wrath and never quote the parts that talk about his love? The answer is simple; to try to jsutify their hatred of God. So sorry, but again the actions of atheists contradict their words.

Yeah, the parts where we hear about God's love? What parts where we hear about God's love?
Maybe you mean the stuff Jesus said, like the Beatitudes? The meek shall inherit the Earth? Blessed are the peacemakers? How about that bit about it being easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven? Yeah, you know, that's actually really good stuff. A real, solid code of ethics. Too bad it freakin' contradicts everything his "dad" said, did, or commanded his people to do.
Jesus, I've got no problem with. It's just too bad that you people decided to modify the Jewish religion to incorporate him as a god; his teachings would have been much better off as a philosophy, a la Buddhism. Like Ghandi said, "I like your Christ, but I do not like your Christians; they are so unlike your Christ."
...I lost the point in there somewhere, didn't I? Sorry, I work retail, and it's been a long week and a half.
People only do that when fundies like you try to claim that you believe in a loving god. I went to religious instructions as a child for several years and all they ever teach you is the warm and fuzzy stuff in an attempt to brainwash you, so when those children grow up they tend to be ignorant of the extent to the other side of things. In which case it's perfectly logical to show what kind of nutcase actions your dictator god is capable of.
Because the rest of your so-called 'good' book has quite a seamy underside that, for some odd reason, doesn't seem to get quite the press that your few and far between 'love' quotes get.
If you didn't cherry-pick your belief we wouldn't have to point out the inconsistancies, lies, contridictions, etc.
Huh! I never knew people looked at it that way. That's an interesting interperetation of what quotes are used, and a neat way of lumping a huge class of people all together. Personally, I do my best to not quote the bible for fear of misquoting it and looking like an asshole.
To Ed-
Calling Buddhism a philosophy over a religion is a little bit... Off, I think.
Siddharta's departure from the Hindu / Later Vedic traditions (I have been told) seems to mirror the actions of Jesus. However, as it stands Buddhism (or at least, the form praciced primarily in China) not only carries with it all of the mythology of Hinduism (rejecting those parts which give rise to a caste system, of course) but has actually created elements to create its own unique mythology (e.g. the Boddhisattva Kuan-Yin).
@Carico
Then why do atheists only quote the parts in the bible that describe God's wrath and never quote the parts that talk about his love?
BECAUSE THEY SEEM TO BE THE ONLY PARTS THAT YOU FUNDIES SEEM TO UNDERSTAND AND APPLY. 'Nuff said.
I would make another question, why do KJV idiots only quote the OT and not the NT, THE REAL FOUNDATION OF CHRISTIANITY?, easy, because Jesus seems not to justify their stupidity. And the atheist quote the wrath of God for two reasons, One, BECAUSE IT EXISTS, I´m sorry. Second, because, as you say, it justifies why it´s difficult to like such an idea of God, and third, because fundies quote those same excerpts most of the time, to justify their hate. Be consequent.
I tend to focus on the wrath parts because there's just so darned MANY of them. That whole Old Testement thing is just chock full of them! And then you have the New Testement where you have a kinder, gentler God/Jesus/Bill Gates who does silly things like cursing a fig tree to never bare fruit simply because it didn't have any figs OUT OF SEASON when he was hungry.
Wait, maybe I SHOULD focus on the love parts. Like getting drunk and impregnating your own daughters! That's GOTTA be love. Right?
Then why do creationists only quote the scientific publications that describe what is either unknown or has been subsequently proven to be wrong and never quote research that proves beyond a reasonable doubt that evolution happened? The answer is simple; to try to justify their hatred of atheism. So sorry, but again the actions of creationists contradict their words.
There fixed.
Sure Charles Manson was a murderous, cult leader, bent on the destruction of humans. But nobody ever talks about his wonderful homecooked, green pepper meatloaf.
You , know this Carico, is a scary one. I can see her straping on a bomb to blow up some atheists for her god. I mean if you really wana prove your love to god, theres nothing like killing something. Hell, even god killed his son.
Listen, I know God, whether He's there or not, has his good side. But some of his fan club members contradict themselves by saying He shows ONLY love. You can be religious, but don't try to force me.
Then why do Christians only quote the parts in the bible that fit with their particular worldview and never quote the parts that talk about his love? The answer is simple; to try to jsutify their hatred of everyone who thinks differently to them. So sorry, but again the actions of Christian contradict reality.
Better? Good.
Atheists quote Bibble passages of God's wrath because we want to point out that your supreme Gawd of love and peace often acts like a murderous dictator. It's up to you, as his supremely self-satisfied followers, to explain the disconnect. Which you can't, so you accuse atheists of hating a god we don't believe in any more than we believe in Isis or Dagon.
Since atheists don't even believe that God exists, the question isn't about why they hate him, since one cannot hate the nonexistent.
The question is, considering all the atrocities attributed to him in the Bible by his own worshippers, why would anyone NOT hate God if he DID exist?
~David D.G.
This is the same guy who says we have to take the Bible word for word literally from page one. Of course, when people point out some certain literally interpreted passages that would cast God in a less than appealing light, he's all "Oh, well those don't count as much. I'll just blame you for bringing it up so I can keep pretending God never did or said anything like that." And you call us out for picking and choosing, you damn hypocrite?
Atheists only quote the angry parts because that's all they hear. You're aware that non-religious people aren't widely known for reading the Bible on their own, so they all have to go on what you quote -- and when you talk to them, you only whip out the angry bits. I've told you a dozen times already, you're doing it all wrong. Stop treating the non-religious community like your doomed adversaries and start rescuing who you can, since that's supposed to be your mission.
You poor, sad, abused creature. He slaps you around, brings nothing but misery to everyone he touches, and you just respond with, "but he loves me". All the "love" you talk about does not excuse the evil he does, or the evil done in his name. If the Joker donated a billion dollars to foreign missions and malaria research, he'd still be the fucking Joker.
Lets do a little statistics, using those from The Sceptics Annotated Bible. As of this very good website, the bible contains:
- Absurdities: 1770 entries
- Injustice: 1473 entries
- Cruelty and violence: 1251 entries
- Intolerance: 683 entries
- Contradictions: 456 entries
- Doubtful "family values": 396 entries
- Misogyny: 370 entries
- Things incompatible with science and history: 375 entries
- Strong words / Swearing: 190 entries
And on the other hand:
- Good stuff: 477 entries
Sorry, "Carico", but simply from pure statistics, the bible is a book where the bad things outweigh FAR the good stuff.
The fact that so many fundies seem to just want to kill, imprison, exile or threaten an eternity in the flames of hell for everybopdy who doesn't agree with them is a pretty good indicator of the god they believe in.
Love seems to be almost foreign to them as medieval Japanese is to me.

Your argument is not only invalid Carico, your 'beliefs', and what they're based on (certainly the bigotry of fundies like you) are not only blown out of the water, but the space-time continuum as a whole.
nope, we point out the countless cases of rape, genocide, crime, murder, corruption and overall stupidity in the wholly babble to get that 'omniscient, omnipotent, omnibenevolent' out of your head.
or just google: 'epicurus god' and watch your belief be splattered.
Because even if your god did exist, the many words describing his love are empty promises.
Also, when you love someone, you don't constantly threaten them with eternal torture if they bow down and do everything you say.
“Then why do atheists only quote the parts in the bible that describe God's wrath and never quote the parts that talk about his love?”
God is often described as omnibenevolent. Infinite mercy. This is impossible if he ever DOESN’T offer mercy to anyone.
So when a bleever says ‘God Is Love,’ we kinda HAVE to point out where he’s a vengeful prick. I mean, really, you’re terrified he’ll find fault with you and throw you (or others) in Hell, but you swear he’s a Loving Being. You sound like a victim in an abusive relationship. “He’s a good father. Yes, he threw Mary into the furnace, but he attended EVERY SINGLE ONE of Corbin’s little league games!”
"The answer is simple; to try to jsutify their hatred of God.”
I hate god about the same that i hate Lex Luthor. Or Darth Maul. Fictional characters are supposed to be good or bad people, but sometimes the writers are inconsistent.
“So sorry, but again the actions of atheists contradict their words.”
How in the fuck is that a contradiction?
God as written in the Bible is sexist, judgmental, misogynistic, bigoted, whimsical, unstable, and irresponsible.
God as we see him in real life is… Well, we don’t.
Confused?
