Homeschooling works, but it's too easily abused by evil Christian parents. IMHO teaching Christianity to children is child abuse. They should be thrown in jail posthaste.

I'd agree with his first sentence. A lot of Christians decide to homeschool for "spiritual reasons" don't try to keep tabs on their children's progress, and their kids fall behind in spite of their conviction that they're giving their children a quality education.
I know one couple with 12 homeschooled kids and their kids are all intelligent and friendly. I also know another family who homeschooled their first and he passed his GED with flying colors.
However, I'll have to part company on the last part as I do know quite a number of believers who are my friends.
Unfortunately the site is down right now. NoDeity (my co-admin) says that our host was the victim of a DOS attack and is moving to a better server. There's no estimated time, which is really frustrating.
When it comes back, you can see it at http://www.graveyardofthegods.com/forum/
You'll be welcome to quote-mine from me again, I enjoy it. It's like a little surprise in the morning. ;)
>> I hate the religious people who abuse their children. <<
So do I, but we have a very different definition of "abuse".
If they don't meet requirements for home-schooling (which presumably means certain minimums in curriculum areas, including science), then yes, the kids need to be put in a real school or the curriculum brought up to scratch. But calling it child abuse to give an insufficient curriculum while homeschooling is a bit extreme, and calling it child abuse to teach them Christianity is more than a bit extreme.
Re #1540: No, he's not the most hate-filled goofball around. Just look at DoctorDoom for proof. But he's definitely not too far down the list.
Re #1541: 5 usually means "holy shit", either because it's so scary or so stupid. 1 means "lame, I'm not even sure why that made the list".
"I would like to start off by saying one thing. Religion its self does not encourage narrow mindness (at least Islam doesn't (Me being a Muslim an all)), its the people who take it either to literally, out of context, or just contradict it in general. Being religious is fine, and I have met plenty of religious people who are tolerant and open minded. I beleive we should never use the fanatics as a repersentation of all the people in any religion. This goes from Hindu's, to Muslims, to Christians, and as this very quote suggests, Atheists.
Personally, I would prefer people on this site to not do as the people who are quoted on this site do. I.E. make assumptions on other societies, religions, and people in general. It makes you look like an ass. I believe that this quote only proves my point."
That was me on a other post. Personally, this guy is just as bad. You know what the fundamentalists Christians say? The same fucking thing. Really, what the hell makes you think your any more right for calling Christians in general for teaching their beliefs then you forcing others to follow yours?
Your nothing but a hypocritical asshole.

I can agree with this.
IMHO teaching Christianity to children is child abuse.
I cannot agree with this. Yes, brainwashing is child abuse, but casually teaching them your religion is not.
I for one, completely agree that indoctrinating children is child abuse.
As a child, my academic/mental developement was stunted as soon as I was able to ask questions. The only thing I was really encouraged to learn was scripture. I learned early on that "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" and that educated men were nothing but god-hating fools and liars. Studying things such biology, geology, astronomy, psychology and many others were forbidden because they were blasphemous and contradicted scripture most of the time. As a teenager, if I was ever caught reading a book/watching a TV program or documentary about any of these things I was severely reprimanded and punished.
As early as 7 years old, I remember going to bed at night shuddering under my covers, wondering if tonight Jesus would rapture his church. I constantly feared that I had accidentally committed the unpardonable sin in my heart. I was sure that the 2nd coming was imminent and thought that maybe if Jesus came back, I would be the only one in my family left behind. I froze in shock and my heart pounded furiously everytime I heard a loud noise because I thought it could be the trumpets sounding the rapture. I just knew that after this, everything would turn to unimaginable chaos and tragedy and then I would be forced to take the mark of the beast. Later, I would be eternally tortured in hell.
My childhood was full of anxiety and fear. If this isn't child abuse, I don't know what is.
...Not to mention the fact that grandma and grampa were looking up at me all the time, suffering and screaming in the flames of hell like they would forever... all because they never "accepted Jesus" into their hearts.
"IMHO teaching Christianity to children is child abuse."
Do not misuse or overuse the term 'child abuse'. Actual child abuse is nothing like bringing a child to Sunday school and youth group. Many friends of mine went to church weekly as children and they're healthy, happy people who love and have great relationships with their parents. There are many valid reasons to not teach religion to children, but comparing child abuse to religious teaching weakens the meaning of the phrase 'child abuse'. The majority of children are not abused by being taught Christianity.
Well, Franc, I'm a fan of yours and Alleee's work, but I think you are a little over the line on this one. At least you're willing to back yourself up, unlike the Christian fundies.
religion can count as a form of psychological abuse...threats of physical violence to control an individual can be just as damaging as the physical violence, and when you repeatidly tell children that they are going to burn in hell that is a threat of violence.
it'd be like telling your kid you'll shoot them unless the voted democrat or republican
