This is the part of the novel where he learns that his father and brother were actually just figments of his imagination that were supposed to be reflections of his inner self. He looks in the mirror afterwards, realizes that he has become what he saw in the two "cultists", and gouges his eyes out in a fit of madness...
Oh, if only fundies had that much self-awareness...

Doesn't it drive you nuts? They can't understand the simplest concepts if it requires them to consider the possibility that their cult's doctrine is wrong. It's almost like they were brainwashed.

A cult is just a religion that isn't popular enough yet. All religions were once cults. The so-called absurdity of, say, Scientologist beliefs is only socially acceptable to mock because it isn't popular enough yet.

While one definition of sect or cult is a small non-mainstream religious group, there are criteria that can be used to attempt to evaluate if a group fits another definition of cult, a high control group for instance. It's true that the JWs are one, I was also raised in it. Millenarist apocalyptic Rapture-Ready too, as others have pointed out.
