I don't know if what I'm seeing is truely what I'm thinking that I'm seeing.

I don't spend a ton of time on forums and that sort of thing. I post here more than anywhere else. The moderators know how long I've been around, and my small number of post show's just how much of an active poster I am.

But I do "lurk" a lot on all sorts of comment threads. Especially on many different news sites.

Consistantly, everywhere I go, when our faith is brought up, Christians, Christianity, our Lord Jesus, the Bible are all mocked and put down in some of the most shocking and vile ways.

It seems to me like it's EVERYWHERE!

I mean, in my day to day life I don't run into it a lot.

But online, you can't go anyplace without us being verbally ripped to pieces.

So your opinions.... what do you think. Am I getting an accurate picture about how our culture feels about us and our faith? Are we at the cusp of actual literal physical persecution here?

Or.... am I just stumbling on the reactions of a bunch of sad individuals that simply prowl the comment lines of all news outlets in the world to talk down and insult believers? All from the comfort of their mother's basements.

I'm of the opinion that this is really how the public at large is feeling, it's just that the computer lets them vocalize it more. People in day to day interactions are at this point, still too polite to act like this in person... just yet.

It's just so thick out there. The way people are speaking, they all think we're no better than ISIS and should be destroyed. Really, I see it over and over again.... these people are saying that we "christians" are no better than ISIS.

I think these lost souls are looking (though they'd denie it) for a reason to cut loose on believers and really start harming us..... it's just under the surface.

Yet, you don't see us tearing apart Quakers, Unitarian Universalists or non-fundie Christians & their beliefs. As the old saying goes, 'Those who don't want their beliefs laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefs'.

It actually sounds more like to me that Scilent is hunting down places to feel persecuted.

SWEETIE, IT'S CALLED THE INTERNET! People will have different opinions than you. How much of that crap did you post in order to have yourself ripped open? I bet a lot. I imagine conversations went much like this.

You do know that your day to day life contains much fewer people than there are online, right? And that people online comes from the whole world, which contains worldviews different from the ones prevalent in your corner of the US, right?

And again with the being on the cusp or at the cusp of something! Why are fundies so focused on the cusp?

Literal physical persecution? Why don't you ask the people who survived the concentration camps, or the ones whose whole families were killed off in Rwanda, in former Yugoslavia, in Turkey, in Daesh territories, ask them if your faith being questioned and mocked is as bad as having your father disappear, your brother hacked to pieces, your mother raped and your little sister taken as spoils of war. THAT's what physical persecution is like.

Where are you writing from, Scilent? I'm writing from the comfort of my room in hubby's and my house (sure, the bank owns most of it, but still).

People are probably saying that Christian fundies are no better than Muslim fundies. Moderate Christians are just as good as moderate Muslims. The Daesh seems to have created its own form of "pidgin" Islam, which it wants the whole world to obey, or else. Good luck with that... It's kinda like if the Amish or the Church of Latter Day Saints armed themselves and wanted to force the whole world to be Amish or Church of Latter Day Saints. Sounds funny like that, doesn't it? But as Daesh have the tanks, weapons and other military equipment which the Iraqi army were provided with by the US, the Saudis and the Russians, and then just ran away from when the shit hit the fan, they are rather formidable, all the same.

It's usually the radical believers who harm others, not the ones lacking belief in petty, insecure war-gods. It might be under your surface, so you're projecting it onto others, dearie.

Yes, there is a big difference between how people act online and in person. That's due to a number of factors, including anonymity. It will also have to do with the quality of the particular online community.

An important one to consider is that if you are reading blogs/message boards in which people are DEBATING, it is not necessarily mocking to state a personal opinion, even one that would be heretical to some other individual. For example, after a childhood raised in a mainstream Christian denomination, after much research and thought, I have rejected the Christian "message." If I were to explain my reasons for this rejection, it might upset you even though my explanation is merely my own path and I respect the right of every individual to make their own spiritual decisions.

You also need to understand that many of us non-believers feel inherently disrespected by YOUR community. A past president even stated he didn't believe atheists were properly citizens of this country. Atheists and non-Christians have actually experienced that physical persecution you are afraid of. The Unitarian/Universalist church I attended at one time had several times in its history experienced arson and bombing.
