[Re: a parent complaining about his son being taught that people are animals]
So do tress. Tell your son your teacher is not quite right in the head.
And I want to add to those who agree that on a "scientific level" that humans are animals, that you need to step away from the scientific understanding of these things. The same science that says we evolved from primates is the one telling you you are an animal.
They're wrong.
There are animals, vegetables, minerals...and HUMANS. Science doesn't get the distinction because science is spiritually dead. Don't fall into that trap. Calling you an animal is like calling a giant redwood a speck of dust. They're so far removed from each other the comparison is absurd.

Linnaeus would be glad to know that there are only four kinds of things: animal, vegetable, mineral, and human. That tidies up the classifications quite nicely.
Which type is God?
"Calling you an animal is like calling a giant redwood a speck of dust. They're so far removed from each other the comparison is absurd."
You've never seen a redwood seed, have you?
Other than we match chimps bone for bone, take a look at your fingernails. Animals usually have claws or hooves. Our fellow primates all have fingernails like we do. Isn't that an amazing coincidence?
The supposed words of Jesus:
Luke 9:27 I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.
Luke 21:32 I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.
Matthew 16:28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.
Why can the 'Rapture Ready' crowd not grasp the implications of those quotes?
Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid.
Words fail me.
I'm reduced to endlessly repeating stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid...
Well, most humans are classified within the animal kingdom. Fundies, however, belong in the mineral category - i.e., "dumb as a rock."

If by "spiritually dead" you mean "uninvested in arbitrary distinctions preserved solely for the purposes of the ideological project of human exceptionalism"...you're right.
Since science is more useful to the rest of us than bowing to your unjustified anxieties, I suggest you get over it.
Curious then that humans have all the mammalian characteristics.
You may smell like a slime/mold and think like a vegetable, but even you, Angyl, are an animal.
We're the bee's knees ... we're the cat's meow ... we're the top o' the heap ... we're God's little cutie pies ... we're some pumpkins ... we're real gone galoots from the jazz institute.
Oh, and our genetic makeup and that of a chimp are almost 99% identical.
Science doesn't make that distinction because we act, have bodily functions and work like animals, with a superior intelligence and conscience BUT ANIMALS NONETHELESS. And be consequent. If you don't trust science DON'T DO IT IN A COMPUTER.

"No, clearly humans are protists!"
For all we know, Angyl here thinks humans are prokaryotes.
(Because prokaryotes aren't animal, vegetable, or mineral, either.)
What an arrogant fuckwad.
From earlier in the thread:
"She may be saying we are mammals.. make sure your son didn't get that mixed up. Mammals and animals do sound sort of alike. My son was taught that we are mammals."
Mammals, a subcategory of....?
Animals, vegetables, minerals and humans...right.
Are fungi vegetables, then? Are viruses "animals", or just ebil demons out to torture your precious soul?
You need to retake some very basic biology.
One more time:
Ecclesiastes 3:18-20 (King James Version)
18 I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.
19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
20 All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.
Human- Kingdom: animal; phulum: chordata; class: mammalia; order: primates. Humans are definately animals, and many sources include the genus Homo within the family of great apes in the primate oder. I'm proud to be an ape, Angyl, and you should be, too.
So, you ignore the fact that we are nearly identical, on a cellular and structural level, to all other animals on this planet?
You're one of those types that believes germs are demons, aren't you?
First they deny we are apes
Then they deny we are primates
Then they deny we are part of the placentals
Then they deny we are mammals
Then they deny we are vertebrates or chordata
Then they deny we are animals
Next they will claim we are not living things.
Although, they just claimed that minerals are living things. Humanity is doomed.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
