That would only be true if tolerance involved turning a blind eye to what one is tolerant towards, but that's not the case. If I am tolerant towards, for example, someone who uses drugs, I am not obliged to shrug off his running a meth lab out of his lab.
Interestingly enough, I've come across literature from leftist groups that advocates moving away from tolerance to acceptance for many of the reasons lesley states. I say we ditch tolerance too, but only so the slogan "live and let live" can get a foothold. No one can misinterpret that, no matter which side of the political extreme they hail from.

Well we did tolerate fundies and theocrats and that led to, well, all so many problems. Such as accountability to Christians. Enabling terrorists like Cantwell. Wait, why are you so upset? I was agreeing!
