what the fuck? how does wearing a fucking shirt that contains half naked women when 1. we have women walking half naked out on the streets complying about how they are being limited by school dress codes! 2. if it was a woman wearing a t-shirt that contains a half naked man it would not drive you nuts. instead you would not care! how does robbing a bank on the same level of that of wearing a shirt that contains half naked women?! this is a fucking false equivalence! holy shit! his shirt was not inappropriate. you feminazi bullied him into submission! I agree insofar as I think the current generation of "tumblr feminists" are over-sensitive, humorless morality police who are totally full of shit, but I think rhetoric like what this guy here is spewing is hurting the cause of people (like myself) who would like to see these pseudo-feminists called out on their bullshit in a respectable manner. Instead, this guy is merely confirming the tumblr feminist line that anybody who doesn't agree with them is a mansplaining tool of "teh patreearky". In short, this guy should eat a bag of dicks for discrediting legitimate criticism of the Anita Sarkesians of the world, and for only contributing to the breakdown of cool-headed intellectual honesty.

And you're right. It's not. The shirt is ugly as hell, but it's nowhere near as provocative as the "shirtstorm" manufactroversy is making it out to be. Not by a long shot.

It isn't. IMHO, I think the design is kind of cool. It's a bunch of sexy but badass pinups wielding guns like an army of Bayonettas!

Unlike the "feminists" complaining, I'm a VERY sex-positive feminist who has no problem with sexualized women, provided she's not in a degraded position. I LOVE sexy, beautiful, kick-butt dangerous women. I'm with Nicholas Krizov on this, both sides are ridiculous.

....you make your own assessment. Sure, it might be tacky in an "Artwork on the side of an old Chevy Van" way but to me, they're no different than Bayonetta, Taarna, Xena, Storm, Lara, etc. The way people are complaining, you'd think it was a shirt covered in butt-naked submissive groveling souls showing off their hoohahs.

I don't think the picture is ugly. As a shirt, it's pretty stupid but as a poster, it's not so bad.

People oogle people, men AND women.

Concerning these things, my worldview is a compromise "Have your cake & eat it, too"....I say....

It's not that you're doing something...

...it's HOW it's done.

For example, the reason I loathe those EVONY ads was because it was both false advertising but it became extremely objectifying to the point where it was just a close-up of a woman's boobs.

It wouldn't have been bad if it was a pic of a beautiful warrior lady on the battlefield raising her sword, making a battle-cry and being both sexy & awesome. However, we get non-existent damsels in distress & "BEWBZ"!

I LOATHE cat-calling/street harassment as well, it's little more than verbal sexual harassment/assault. They know she doesn't like it but they do it, anyway, because they're subhuman slime & deserve a baseball bat to the nuts!

We need more "Fun Feminists" who don't see males & sexuality as "THE ENEMY" or who obsess over "The Male Gaze"! Big deal! There's "The Female Gaze", too and I want to OOGLE THIS, DAMNIT!....

I was afraid I'd get branded by the other posters with the "MRA troll" scarlet letter.

Seriously, why do people insist on seeing the world as so black and white? Don't they realize that there are never only two sides to debate? How hard is it to grasp that, yes, it is in fact possible for you to both NOT be a feminist (or at least, not the "correct" kind of feminist) and NOT be an MRA or an incel?

I actually believe in the ideals of gender equality and what feminism used to actually mean. I think people should be measured and treated by their character and merit, rather than their genitals, boobs or beards. Hell, my favorite character in all of fiction is Ripley from the Alien movies - because she's a strong, badass woman, who isn't just there for sex appeal.

And I think we should be exporting feminism to developing countries where women ARE still treated like subhuman male property. Right now, women are getting their clitorises clipped or thrown on bonfires for allegedly cheating on their husbands (who can often beat or even rape them without ANY criminal repercussions).

But no. Western, American tumblr feminists seem totally obsessed with equating Third World misogyny and sexism with ugly shirts and catcalling.

Laura Croft's got big boobs? She's being exploited by the misogynist video game industry! The latest Tomb Raider game gives Laura a more modest bust - one that feminists had kept asking for for years? Now she's been stripped of her femininity by the patriarchy!

They can't be satisfied, because they're just looking to complain and shriek at imagined slights. It's like how the Christian fundies think they're being oppressed worse than the Jews under the Nazis, because people are saying "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas". Or like how incels claim they're being denied their God-given right to a free fuck.

And if you don't accept the tumblr feminist narrative of "teh patriarky", they'll call you a misogynist man-pig. And if you're a woman and you also say their narrative is full of holes, then you're a self-hating Stepford wife.

But fuck nuance, ambiguity, or shades of gray, I guess.

Let's get more feminists like you, who don't INSIST on seeing rape and misogyny in their soup. I vote for more SpukiKitties and fewer Anita Sarkeesians.

Look, if this guy was wearing it as a bouncer in a bar, it would be fine. Or as a store clerk in a comic book store, or any time he wasn't working or around kids.

But instead, he's a scientist for NASA, a government agency where women are extremely underrepresented. In a discipline where women are routinely driven out because of the sexism and harassment of their coworkers or fellow students creating a hostile work or school environment.

And he's not just wearing it, he's wearing it on television, and none of his coworkers were like "crap, dude, here, we need to get you something a little more professional, we can swap shirts for the TV interview."

He WORKS FOR THE GOVERNMENT. He is a scientist and a professional. And the GOVERNMENT has no problem with a shirt that would be considered 100% inappropriate in any other professional context? My company encourages crazy shirts on Fridays but would discipline someone for wearing that because it's a lot like playing softcore porn on a computer while working. There is nothing wrong with playing/posting wanking material in your own home or hell, even in public but you better believe you should expect backlash for it.

/I say this as someone who loves me some eye candy, but isn't going to post male models in undies by my desk at work

Does nobody understand the concept of context? The shirt is not inherently immoral, and those images are permissible in some contexts, so a shirt with those images is sometimes going to be acceptable.

Overly radical feminists: The problem is not that the shirt exists, it just doesn't belong in that context.

Non-feminists: Most of us don't want the shirt burned, we're just upset that someone wore it when giving announcements on the government's behalf. Imagine Obama giving a speech while wearing a bathrobe that had "I'm the President, losers!" written on it. You'd feel disrespected because the President called you a loser and feel that Obama should have been wearing a suit, right? This is rather similar.

I support gender equality, but I can't help but feel that this commotion over such a petty "issue" can only harm the feminist movement's image amongst the general public. This will only play into the negative stereotypes of feminism and put off many people who could see it as out of touch. The thing is, I do agree with the need for a more realistic portrayal of women in the media, be it in tv shows or films, but I don't agree with this fuss over nothing.

We don't know the man's view on women anyway, he's not a sexist guardian for the patriarchy just because he wore this flamin' shirt. In fact he may support campaigns to get more women involved with science for all we or they know; as I've said, his personal views are not known, so we cannot make any judgement over this. It's time to breath deeply, relax, and focus on real issues that affect women, instead of constant campaigning against things so minor. That way, feminism may be more accessible and presentable to outsiders, and all stereotypes put forth by its opponents will be seen as wrong by a larger percentage of people.

Thanks. I only know the animated feature, though, not the comic book....I think Taarna should stand alone.

Maybe I can find "Heavy Metal" online, download it, then edit it so it's just the opening & closing framing device with just the Taarna story in the middle.

The Loc-Nar comes to the house and melts the astronaut dad, he then starts menacing the daughter...cut to the Taarna sequence, which finishes with the end scene where the Loc-Nar is destroyed and the little girl morphs into Taarna and flies away on her cute pterodactyl-bird-thing.

I always thought the Heavy Metal stories were mostly hit or miss and the Loc-Nar telling the stories as a bit odd. The storyline & continuity issues are haphazard. Each cartoon works best as a stand-alone thing or told by a storyteller character akin to that old guy in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The Loch-Nar works best as a presence in the stories, not the guy telling them.

And how can it tell the girl the story of it's demise, which suddenly happens in "real-time"? It makes no sense.

Nope, in my edit, it'll melt Pop, begin to menace the kid...cut to Taarna story.....

That isn't to say he doesn't have a point, but at the same time, he's pretty much just as bad as the feminists who are upset about the shirt.

It's the same kinds of feminists who are outraged by Bayonetta and outraged by Samus wearing rocket heels in SSB4. Bayonetta is NOT an objectified woman, and even the woman who designed her sees her as empowering.

There are four kinds of feminists. The activist feminists who paved the road for advancements in gender equality, the advocate feminists who spread as much information as possible in the hopes it does some good, the couch feminists who are just looking for the next KONY 2012, and then the radical feminists, who themselves are split into two kinds - the kind that demand that women oppress men as revenge for their own oppression, and the kind that want women to wear burqas because they're so much more fragile than men and that's why men are evil.

The problem for me is that he was wearing it during an official interview with a news organization as a member of the European Space Agency. For a few moments, he was their representative, the face of science and progress.

And for those few moments, the face of science and progress looked like one more white dude that sees women as bodies first and persons second. Now, combine that with the overwhelming lack of women in STEM fields, and the institutionalized, subconscious sexism that continues to permeate STEM to this day, a bigger problem starts to coalesce.

You're right, it's just a shirt.

And it's just an assumption that you aren't qualified.
And it's just an assertion that you're incapable of learning or doing or succeeding without sleeping your way to the top (because your career path is controlled by men).

No, he was representing himself and no one else. Instead of looking at it through a collectivist lens, look at it through an individualist one.

Glad to see other people see shirt storm for what it is: the fevered knee-jerk reaction of radical feminists to a goofy shirt.

The more overused terms like "misogyny" and "rape culture" become, the less meaning they will have. Radfems seem incapable of comprehending this, and react to growing backlash by simply dialing up their whininess.

In this regard, they closely resemble fundamentalist Christians. They have become spoiled by a news media and internet climate that indulges their tantrums, allowing them to continue their delusions of legitimacy.

Just as fundies in the 80s snarled at "satanic" TV and movies, radfems of today see misogyny in the most trivial of things. And in both belief systems, women are childlike beings who must be shielded from the outside world at any cost.
