"Now, I saw that speech Obama gave to children, nothing particularly radical jumped out at me. I really think people are overreacting. It was a lot of encouraging children to get an education and work hard and not let other people convince them they're doomed to failure. How is that a bad thing? Shouldn't we want our children to go to do the best they can? Or am I missing something?"

Who is dooming America's children to failure?
Fundies like the Texas Board of Education, Answers in Genesis and the Creation Institute.
Too easy
You meatwhistles invoke hitler into everything , don't you?
Seems like you're the ones with the desire for a new hitler...
You know, if you have any real problems with anything Obama has done, or his policies or whatever, go ahead. I'm not entirely satisfied with him so far either.
But this is just grasping for straws that aren't there.
I swear, Obama could walk out into the Rose Garden in April, off handedly remark about it being a lovely spring day, and the RR crowd would talk about his upcoming persecution of Christians with hay fever.
Hell, I'm convinced that if Obama declared a personal awakening and that he was now 100% opposed to abortion, there'd be a segment of the Rapture Ready crowd that would join Planned Parenthood.
"Yeah, he gets the children to respect him so that when he does say something radical they think to themselves "I saw this guy is 1st grade and he was really nice and I will do anything he says". That's the problem!!"
=====================
That's the best (yet) defense of RR paranoia. Don't even think of letting the kids 'trust' this guy - regardless of what he's saying *now*, he *might* say something 'radical' years from now, and they might believe him! Oh noes!!
Yup, sounds psychological to me too.
Psychological problem in your part to be more certain. And no, playing with RaptureRetads isn't going to do any good for you. Maybe, instead, you could go outside and meet the real world. It misses you.
Who is dooming America's children to failure?
Probably those who want to replace evolutionary theory with a talking snake & magic tree.
Sounds a little Hitler-esque to me.
Sounds a little Godwin-esque to me.
"This sounds psychological to me"
You are dense, aren't you.
"Who is dooming America's children to failure?"
Their parents, the abomination that is the public education system in this country, various media and society at large.
Just off the top of my head.
"Sounds a little Hitler-esque to me."
I don't believe I recall any footage of Hitler encouraging any such thing. Still, even if he did , so what? Hitler was a vegetarian and enjoyed painting. Should we ban those too because Hitler did it?
A little further up the thread we find:
I opted my kids out of the first speach. I sent a letter to their school saying that I did not agree with the socialist agenda of the usurper and my children would not be indoctrinated into the obama youth. My daughter told me her teacher gasped when she read the letter.
A parent objecting to their child attending a 'speach' in favour of education would make me gasp too, let alone the rest of the nonsense.
Well, thank goodness that at least one poster over there has some bloody sense!
If I'd had a speech like that from the president at the time, or anyone in a position of authority actually, I think I would have done a better job in school.
Now for your more typical RR poster , who does NOT have any sense (sense of irony included):
....and thats why my kids are in a christian school!!!! My kids will never ever go to a public school, if I can't aford christian school than I will homeschool. I will NOT let my kids be brainwashed!!!!
Who is dooming America's children to failure?
Gee, I dunno, the ones that say the "worldly" education is worthless as they will be Raptured so any effort to better themselves is for nothing?
the other day I was visiting my parents and found an interesting permission slip on the table.
my youngest sister goes to a public middle school, and it was a form for parents to sign if they did NOT want their child watching the presidential address to students.
WTF. he's the freakin' president talking about freakin' education, it's not a PG13 movie.
What have the Roman Catholics got to do with it? Just because Hitler, possibly the most infamous Catholic of the 20th century belonged to a different Christian cult to yours, doesn't make that cult any worse than yours. Nor did Hitler's membership of the Roman Catholic Christian cult lead him to evil. I'm sure he would have been just as evil had he been a trainee pilot in a wannabe aerobatic Christian cult.
@Berny: I know a few reasonable people who believe the Rapture will happen - at some unpredictable time in the future, and it should make no odds on their day-to-day lives as it may not happen in their life-time.
Then again, that's a sane interpretation of a religious belief, and so not appropriate for RR.
This sounds psychological to me
What the fuck is that supposed to mean? Do you even know? Do you really expect anyone with a shread of sense to believe that there is A) Some secret psychlogical brainwashing Jedi Mind Trick, or B) That the aforementioned technique could effect anyone who saw or heard a single speech.
Who is dooming America's children to failure?
Who? The people who are advocating removing established scentific facts from the classroom in favor of religious nonsense. Who else? The people who ear their ignorance like a badge, people who push this idiotic idea that being educated is somehow eliteist and anti-american.
Sounds a little Hitler-esque to me.
How the fuck is encouraging kids to work hard and stay in school "Hitler-esque"? Where were your condemnations when Dubya and Reagan expressed the exact same sentiments in their back to school speeches? Or is it only "Hitler-esque" when it is said by anyone other than a conservative christian?
There is no possible way that these people's kids go to Masterman. I'm assuming those in the thread talking about sending notes to school and whatever else have kids in schools who were going to show it on channel one or something.
As a teacher, yes, it might be a little difficult to get a note from a parent going on and on about how their own president was a fraud and a speech about working hard and learning was hitler-esque indoctrination.
But, it sure would explain a hell of a lot about what is wrong with your kid.
"It was a lot of encouraging children to get an education and work hard and not let other people convince them they're doomed to failure."
He forgot to add, "unless, of course, you're Jewish. Then, you're just totally fucked."
@MarylandBear Springtime for Hitler and Germany.
Deutschland is happy and gay!
What the? Did you read the italicized paragraph, 1angel4u? (Very arrogant nickname, btw.) Obama does not want people convincing children that they are doomed to failure. If a Republican said the exact same speech, you'd be applauding him. Admit it.
Okay seriously. People need to fucking stop comparing everyone they disagree with to Hitler. Or if you do decide to do it, say it to a Holocaust survivor's face, I dare you. You'll rightfully get a verbal evisceration and a possible (justified) punch to the face.
THIS SOUNDS PSYCHOLOGICAL TO ME
PSYCHOLOGICAL ANYTHING IS BAD
MAKING CHILDREN FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES IS BAD
God you're an idiot
"Who is dooming America's children to failure? "
No-one said that. Fuck, I have the quote out of context and even I can tell that. What they said was that children are being discouraged, convinced that they're probably going to fail. Which does happen. And the only way children can exceed expectations is if they overcome that.
But to understand the distinction, I suppose you'd have to see children as people rather than resources to be brainwashed.
You see, Hitler had an education, therefore anybody who has or gets an education is as bad as Hitler.
Wait a minute, that still doesn't make any damn sense.
"It is our duty now to begin to lay the plans and determine the strategy for the winning of a lasting peace and the establishment of an American standard of living higher than ever before known. We cannot be content, no matter how high that general standard of living may be, if some fraction of our peoplewhether it be one-third or one-fifth or one-tenthis ill-fed, ill-clothed, ill-housed, and insecure....
... We have come to a clear realization of the fact that true individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. “Necessitous men are not free men.” People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made. ...
...We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for allregardless of station, race, or creed.
Among these are:
... The right to a good education."
- Franklin Delano Roosevelt
I bet that sounds a little Hitler-esque to you too.
I was amazed by the comment from 'Reason&Hope'
If Mr. Nice President told me as a child to study hard, etc. and that was good advice, then when Mr. Nice President tells me as a teen or a grown-up to do something else, I'm all the more likely to do what he says.
What's Obama supposed to do when even giving good advice to young kids is seen as a sign of his evil intentions?
Who is dooming America's children to failure
He didn't say "America's children are doomed to failure" - he said "don't let other people convince them they're doomed to failure". Believe it or not, there are plenty of inner city kids who have been told exactly that. Obama would know about these things. That's why he's the President of the US; not President of East Bumblefuck, KY where white rednecks like 1angel4u live in their little "everybody's like me" cocoons.
Crap on a cracker, I swear, if Obama ran into a burning building, saved ten adults (including a pregnant woman) and twenty children, singlehandedly convinced Al-Qaeda that Terrorrism is wrong, cured AIDS and Cancer, and solved World Hunger, Conservatives would still be blathering on about how he's a terrroist/nazi/illegal immigrant/all of the above.
I am so tired of the Hitler stuff. It is ridiculous to pull the Hitler/Nazi card in American politics. If encouraging kids is "Hitler-esque" then we must have it so extremely good here.
Obama could cure cancer, find a source of unlimited money that will never run out, bring world peace and shake hands with Jesus Christ and RR would still find a way to call him Hitler.
> This sounds psychological to me
Speaking to children is psychological. What an insightful revelation. Not.
> Who is dooming America's children to failure?
Dunno - the ignorant people? Just a hunch?
> Sounds a little Hitler-esque to me.
Speaking to children is "a little Hitler-esque"?
Quit speaking to children then, you little Hitler. If speaking to children is a little Hitleresque, then we're all one small step from invading Poland.
I saw a car run a red light this morning, therefore Hitler.
As for who is dooming America's children to failure....obviously it's the fucking Christians. What kind of dumbass question was that?
Confused?
