It's religion. Religion is a dominating force in human history and defines human interactions, and people smart enough to realise that have defined things in this context.
The French Revolution smashed Catholicism, in the sense it put Catholicism on the defensive from that point on (in the 19th century and to this day). In the Soviet Union, the Russian Church didn't recover until the end of that state. If Putin were stupid and betrayed his power center in the church, the Russian Church could be defeated again. That's why Putin is evil, after all.

Correct, but I cannot support broad immigration bans, since it depends on the individual in question.
I've seen evidence that the 2016 Turkish coup was long-planned, well-intended, just the right people (Davutoglu, "purged" by Erdogan) was not present to be the beneficiary, yet the military launched the coup as a last-ditch effort since no alternative was left since this coup plan had been effectively destroyed. But I remember that evening, when I rooting for the putschists the way I root for my sports teams, and the accounts of the coup from reporters in Istanbul and the stories of fighter jets abovehead, I was cheering like they scored a touchdown or a goal. It was incredible. I was at a restaurant with my family, and fanatically checking the news on the coup with my phone. I was very disappointed that by the time we left the restaurant, it was evident that Erdogan's thugs had won the conflict. Reflecting on my own thoughts at the moment, it was comparable to how I treat my favourite sports teams losing. But in reality, it was a major conflict, and the good guys lost. The same guys who would've preserved the modern Turks as a great nation.
But yes, Ataturk was right in suppressing Islam. No less than the French revolutionaries and their descendents and ideological spawn were right in suppressing Catholicism. People should be doing this now--finding ways to infiltrate religion and minimise and destroy its strength. Christianity, after all, has tons of preachers who don't believe in the Bible, don't believe in anything I'd think being a Christian meant--they are pretty much walking arguments of the successful secularisation of Christianity. One day, I hope many, many imams will end up the same way--evidence of secularisation of Islam.
But I know certain people on FSTDT are huge supporters of Islamist groups like those of the Muslim Brotherhood and related Islamists who decapitate children to prove their point.
