Wow, a bit of a jump in logic, there. Since when have atheists not been able to marry?
And, an "a-theist" doesn't even believe in a god in the first place("a"=no; not + "theist"=someone who subscribes to the idea that there are deities to be worshiped). It makes NO SENSE to rate an atheist's overall ability to love against their love of something that an atheist wouldn't even think exists and is probably indifferent to.
Now, how does an atheist treat other PEOPLE, who DO exist and are VERY real? That would say more about their overall ability to love.
"atheists can't love someone if they can't love God."
I'm afraid I don't see why this would be so.
"This is why they can't marry."
Someone should tell that to the government so that they'll stop issuing marriage licenses to us.
How many times have I read fundies say they love 'God' more than their wives, husbands, and children? Too many fucking times not to be disturbed & distrustful of their feelings, that's for damn sure.
my missus would like a word in your shell like!!!!
and for the use of a non sequitor in a fundie quote lets go to our international judges.....
<drum roll>
british judge-"thats a cracking display there, it was pure and a good performance...i give 10
<cheers>
american judge-" i have to agree with my brit collegue, it can only be a 10
french judge- an awesome display in the failure of logic, but lacked subtlety, but still worthy of a 10
spanish judge- no im sorry it can only be a 10
<the crowd go wild>
and there you have it folks an average of 10
and the winner of the non sequitor is......
Marianne Liz!!!!
Oh believe me I love. I end up hurt and disappointed but I love.
*sigh*
And you can love someone and be with them without marrying :) Of course you fundies generally see this as a huuuuuge sin. But atheists can marry if they desire.
Also I don't wanna marry God :P
Actually it goes: If you can't love yourself, you can't love someone else either. (or so I have heard it...)
And none the less we got our licence to get married even that we weren't members of church at the time we got married (and still aren't) because we're both atheists.
Oooh, a strawman competition!
Deists can't love someone as they are too much in love with a fantasy ideal of perfection. A mere human can only come second-best.
Plus they think their actions are constantly being watched and graded so they can gain postmortem entrance to a nice place. This means they can never be really selfless and altruistic as it's always really about getting more good behaviour points.
They also think women are second-best. This causes huge resentments and power struggles, resulting in slyness and manipulative behaviour or overbearing bossiness.
This is why they can't stay married.
Once again, thank you for telling me how I feel and think and what I'm capable of.
I don't suppose you would believe it's easier for me to love beings (human and non-) that I can see, speak to (and receive a clear answer, whether audible, tactile or visual), touch, and receive love back from than it is for me to love an incorporeal being who apparently doesn't care to give us any evidence of his existence other than several-thousand-year-old writings.
I think this is an obvious Poe. It's homosexuals they go on about not marrying, not atheists.
@ raider of the lost fridge: Theists believe in an all-powerful god(s). Deists believe that a god(s) existed at one point to start the universe, then left it to its own devices. They don't try to appease the no-longer-present sky lord.
Atheists, do you know why your "marriage" (if you're "married") isn't really a marriage?
Because you don't believe in GOD, that's why. Without that belief, your "marriage" lacks the spiritual blessings of GOD and therefore really isn't a marriage at all, is it?
You may as well have just signed a lease agreement. (After all, this is all a "civil union" is.)
Your thoughts?
GOD bless you-
Captain Art Griego
That's the question Marianne Liz responded to.
Once again another xtian is convinced that xtian's own the copyright to marriage and can dictate who can and can't get married. If I could get married I would in a heartbeat. But it's illegal here in Ohio.
"atheists can't love someone if they can't love God"
That's why some Atheists have relationships (as do I). At least they love someone who actually EXISTS.
"This is why they can't marry"
Some choose to have non-committal partnerships (me included), some choose to marry their partner. Secular facilities that have as much legal recognition as church services exist to fulfill this need. Two Words: Registry Offices.
Proved wrong much, Marianne Liz?
So why are marriage licenses are issued by the state (at least in the US) and not the church?
Why don't employers require a church affiliation when adding your spouse to your insurance benefits? Or the IRS on your joint tax return?
Fundie stupidity knows no bounds.
Marriage existed before christianity and it will be here long after your cult has mercifully departed this earth like all other failed experiments.
The level of fail you exhibit with your ridiculous assertions and dark ages mentality will be the death of you.
I thought it was the other way around. "If someone comes to me with a gift and hates their brother or sister, leave the gift, go back and repent."
Or "If you can't love your neighbor whom you can see, how can you love your god whom you cannot see?"
Oddly enough, your own bible says that if we marry a Christian, we get a free ticket to heaven. Thus, I am married to a Christian...
I guess I don't believe in marriage the way you do.
I believe that love is all that matters.
I know I am naive, perhaps a bit of a dreamer... I think it is romantic, sweet...
And for what it is worth, I absolutely love my partner...
I don't know if it will last. I guess it will, we have been together for a long time.
We do occasionally think we should get married but it somehow never seems to be the most important thing in our lives.
Anyway, I wish you well if you find love, whoever and whatever you may be.
Love really should conquer all.
Peace.
atheists can't love someone if they can't love God.
Total bullshit. Are you honestly claiming that because I don't believe in your "god", much less "love" him, that I therefore don't love my children, or that I am incapapable of loving another person? You are most certainly mistaken.
This is why they can't marry
So your saying that both of my mattiage are what? A figment of my imagination? What about two of my very close friends, both atheists who have been married to each other for going on 20 years? Does their marriage suddenly not exist just because you say so?
You also seem to be under the (incredibly mistaken) impression that there is some law preventing atheists from getting married, there is not. This is why there really should be mandatory standards and testing for homeschooling. So that we don't wind up with any idiots like this one who don't have any actually knowledge about the law, or any other subject, but instead are just taught nothing but ideological talking points. That's fine for a parrot, but at least teach your kids how to think for themselves.
@ Vince:
They already believe that. They also think all non-christians have sex with anything that moves and have a secret agenda to destroy them all spiritually.
Pfft. As if I'd share my brilliant plan with anyone else...
Wrong on so many levels. My dad is an Atheist and I am a Christian, and he still loves me even though we agree to disagree when it comes to religion.
"This is why they can't marry."
I bet you meant to say, "This is why they shouldn't marry."
Well, why can't they marry? Marriage is both a religious and government provided institution. You can get married at a court house without a religious ceremony and vise versa.
So what you're saying is that love is required in order to get married? If you don't love someone you can't marry then, then the opposite would also be true, you can marry someone you love. Would you please explain this to the gay community?
You can´t trust in the love of a fundamentalist bible believing christian.
Because they love god more than even their wifwe and family, they would willingly torture or kill their relatives (like their wife and/or children) as long as god or the bible demand it (and there are lots of examples within the bible, about god ordering that you should kill even your relatives if they don´t believe in YHWH)
Marriage is a relic of the past and I, for one, don't even want to get married. I will be with the woman I love because I love her and not because there's some contract binding us together. So take your marriage and shove it up your ass.
I'm Atheist
My boyfriend is Atheist
We're going to have an Atheist wedding (no church, no priest)
We're going to have (hopefully) Atheist children, if they choose to follow God, it's their choice and I'll love them no matter what they believe (I'd still prefer intelligent children though)
so ner *pokes tongue out*
Huh? What has love to do with gods, or marrying for that matter? Lots and lots of people around the world marry for economic reasons, or because their parents tell them to, or to get away from their parents.
Or are you saying that love is imaginary, just as gods are? No, that makes no sense either, that would make marriage imaginary too, or something.
Now I am thoroughly confused.
Easy Marianne Liz. If your an atheist and you want to get married, Just see Quote# 63794 by Rick on Y! answers.
There is no such thing as premarital sex you marry some one by having sex with them.
So we don't need to love God, all we need to do is have sex with someone.
You can't beat the sage advice on Y! answers for solving these little dilemmas.
"atheists can't love someone if they can't love God. This is why they can't marry."
And I love spaghetti because my house is made of bricks.
See? I can do a complete logical disconnect, too!
Been married for 10 years with 2 children..never once have I cheated on her. Not because of a god mind you. I can ask your god to forgive me of cheating on my wife and it doesnt change my heaven status.
I dont cheat on her because I dont want her to cheat on me.
My parents were/are both atheists, and were happily married for 14 years until my mom died after being hit by a car.
Reality disagrees with you.
Confused?
