My Mom and her siblings use to have to go and select a branch off a tree to get spanked with. And my Mom carried over that tradition, except she kept a belt hanging on her door to beat the daylights out of us, and I mean beat, not spanked! Whipped I should say! And then, dared you to call CPS! 911! Anyone! image

Kids could not sue parents then, but they can now! I think some parents are afraid of their kids today.....

Fuck the 50s and it's creepy super-conformity, stepford wives, and hatred of anything not white. Fuck the constant fear of nuclear war or Russian attack. The 50s can suck my dick. We live in the present, not the past, so get used to it.

Actually, most sane parents aren't but that's because they know you're not supposed to beat the shit out of their children. And a child won't sue (or even THINK of suing) unless you give them a really fucking good reason to; like beating the daylights out of them, for example.

Hear, hear. My parents often piss me off and sometimes I feel like I hate them, but reading about stuff like this really puts stuff into perspective... The worst my parents have done is yell at me really loudly and even call me names and insult me, but that rarely happens (every parent blows up sometimes XD). Even if she's often busy or stressed out, my mom really does love me and she doesn't try to hide it she still calls me weird pet names, and I'm 18! I usually take it for granted, but at times like this I feel really grateful that I can be so sure of her love.

I used to have to go get the switch, too. One time when I was about 4 I picked one about the size of a soda straw and had to go back and get a "real one", so to save on extra trips I picked a pretty stout one and it hurt like hell. I thought I may have overdone it.
Shortly after that I found a whole tree branch lying in the street and dragged it home to stock the warehouse, so to speak, and I wouldn't have to travel so far abroad seeking the punishments due me. At this point in my life I expected there would be many. Why Mom could just point out the proper size cudgel and I would pluck it and bend over. Quick justice, and ever onward and upward to new peccadilloes.

Unfortunately . . . the branch was covered with tar, unbeknownst to my small self, and I had ruined my clothes in the fetching. So what was a mother to do?
I don't think I ever had to go fetch a switch again, she just had the Old Man beat my ass half off when he got home from work, all cranky and looking for a scrap. Many times I wished I'd been able to just keep the old tar branch.

As someone who was beaten regularly as a child (my so-called 'father' used a horsewhip on me quite liberally), this hits close to home.

You are an asshole if you believe that beating a child with a straw or a belt or a horsewhip or any other utensil is the proper way of 'disciplining' children. It takes them a long, long, long time to get over that trauma. And even so, many never completely recover. As an adult survivor of extreme childhood physical, verbal and emotional abuse, I curse you and people like you to die the most horrible death known to mankind if you and your kind ever lay a finger nail on an innocent child (no matter what his or her age).
