I'll bet Wally also believes that:
* The Earth's flat.
* The Moon's made of cheese.
* There are sea monsters over the horizon.
* Lightining is God honing his mean javelin skills.
* Thunder is the sound of "Rip Van Winkle" Gnomes bowling.
* Misplaced socks involve little Sock Goblins with reside in the washer/dryer.
* There are guys in the ATM machines with tiny printing presses that print money on demand.
* Lucy & Ricky, Bo & Luke, Dr. House, The News Anchors, Alien Monsters, Joel/Mike & The Bots, The Olympics, The Super Bowl, etc. all literally reside in that box/screen in the living room.
* The world was literally Black & White before circa 1966.
* Light bulbs glow because of magic!
* Wind is caused by trees, sneezing.

...that, and the V12 Merlin engines in such, licenced by Rolls-Royce Aerospace of Britain. Originally in the Spitfires & Hurricanes that - in WWII - defeated the Luftwaffe and made Hitler cack himself at the thought of invading the UK in the Battle of Britain in 1940.

No USA required. Certainly no 'God' required.

I think you hit it well. Lots of pilots were probably concerned about being shot at.

Not quite accurate. 11 American pilots fought in the battle of Britain in British Aircraft. Not many, but they were there. Soon after the BoB the USA gave (under the lend/lease program,...which "lend" was forgiven) hundreds if not thousands of aircraft to Britain to fight the Nazis. 848 P-40 Warhawks alone (Yall called them TomaHawks and later KittyHawks). I quit looking up after that. I figure 848 for one aircraft type was enough. Saw one of them at Duxford air museum. Just some facts, but no intent to take away the incredible valour of the Tommy's at the BoB.

With over 10,000 hours of flight time, I have never prayed or seen any intercession of gawd once. This "you gain a better understanding of faith" is just religionist talk for "I dont understand real science, so I revert to make believe". And as for pilots not flying for atheists??? Sounds like christinsanes are the ones who do the persecuting here. And you appear to venerate their actions. Screw you wally.

So, those (fundie) pilots of said P-51 Mustangs; I guess they don't have fuel indicator gauges on the instrument panels in their cockpits, eh? If their planes fly purely by faith (must be the next stage in aircraft control systems* evolution, after 'Fly By Wire' in the likes of the USA's F-22 Raptor, British/German/Spanish/Italian Eurofighter Typhoon, French Dassault Rafale, Chinese J-20 etc: Fly By Prayer), then surely it wouldn't matter if they don't have exact knowledge of their fuel levels; even if their reserve tanks run out, all they have to do is 'pray', and the engine will continue to run, amirite? Or why bother with fuel at all? If they need fuel gauges, then they don't have much faith in their 'faith'.

Then there's the little matter of the Hawker-Siddeley Harrier; the first successful VTOL plane. What, so it's not it's Rolls-Royce (them again! As with the P-51 Mustang/Spifire/Hurricane's V12 Merlin engines) Pegasus jet engine - with it's vectored thrust nozzles that means it can take off & land vertically; nay, even fly backwards and sideways - it's actually the RAF/Royal Navy/US Marine (in licence-built Harriers) pilots praying?! [/hyper-sarcasm]

In which case - considering the Harrier's VTOL facility - why even bother with waiting for that so-called '(C)Rapture' you lot have a hard-on for? You can just 'faith' your way up to Heaven, can you not?! [/smartarse]
