The war on promiscuity picked up steam some six months ago when stores in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv belonging to the same chain were burned by radical haredim. In the Geula neighborhood in Jerusalem 'immodest' women were attacked with bleach which was sprayed onto their clothes.
Ultra-Orthodox rabbis decided to institutionalize their struggle, holding an emergency conference on the subject six weeks ago.
The event took place in the presence of the Lithuainia haredi public’s leading rabbis, including Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv and Rabbi Aharon Liv Steinman. The conference was intended for yeshiva students only, meaning married men, most of whom are fathers of young daughters.

As far as I'm concerned, if they had clothes on, they weren't dressed, 'immodestly'.
I've said it before and I'll say it again...

I know there are lots of good men, but it seems to me it's almost always men involved in these insane religious persecutions, and women who are the victims of their insanity. What is wrong with them? Do they hate their own mothers, sisters, wives and daughters so much?
And there you basically have everything that's wrong with fundamentalism tied up in a neat little package with a bow on top: the conviction that they are so absolutely correct and so completely sure of "God's" will that they have the right, no, the obligation , to force their beliefs on everyone around them by any means necessary.

In case you don't know, muslims have been doing this for 30 years.

Yes.
That's the patriarchy for you. They want to control their own mothers, wives, and daughters so much that they'll condone a potentially harmful act, be it spraying bleach or throwing stones, and shift all the blame for hurting anyone onto the women themselves. They make up elaborate stories about Adam and Eve, and engage in victim blaming, all so that the responsibility for violent acts upon women and others doesn't fall on them.
Its sick. But I gotta agree with Chan. No matter what they may claim/think, theres no way one can commit such acts against those they love.
Its either hate, or severe delusional psychosis, but it sure as the lack of hell aint love.
As an Orthodox Jew, allow me to state that Orthodox Jews are not a monolithic entity. There are plenty of Orthodox Jews (including myself) who have spoken up against people who do idiotic things like spraying bleach and the like.
In other words, don't judge us all by our lunatic fringe.

Dont worry. we work on a person by person basis. If you dont think like those monsters, then youre not one of them. Its important for moderates and non-fundies to speak out against their very loud-mouthed extremist factions. Otherwise, thats how they get power and recruit/raise even more of themselves.
<< You know, I hope that the next time these schmucks go after a woman for dressing "immodestly" that it turns out they're harassing an ex-IDF special forces member with a reasonably good command of Krav Maga. >>
Brian X: Seconded enthusiastically!
Incidentally, your comment reminds me of a newswire photo I saw while working at a newspaper back in the mid-1980s: an attractive, dark-haired woman in a black bikini, walking on a public beach and toting a BIG military weapon of some sort! She was an active soldier in the Israeli military, who (according to the cutline for the photo) had to keep their weapons with them at all times, even on holiday (though it's possible that was only a temporary measure being used at the time). It made for a pretty hilarious image and doubtless drew double-takes from a lot of folks on the beach, as I'm sure she was well aware -- hence the big grin on her face in the photo!

I wonder if they approve of strangers throwing bleach on those young daughters?
No no no, those girls were some OTHER guys' young daughters.
And, hey, if you're going to let your daughter traipse around with her calves and forearms showing, she gets what she deserves!
Confused?
