A pastor and his wife are in custody accused of killing three of their children by starving them to ward off evil spirits, police in South Korea said Wednesday.
The couple told police the children -- aged nine, seven and three -- had been ill, which they believed was a sign they were invaded by evil spirits after eating too much on Lunar New Year.
They then cut the children's hair to chase the spirits out and starved them from January 24 until February 2, only allowing them to drink water. Local media reports said the parents had beaten the children with a belt and a fly swatter numerous times.
The pastor, named only by his surname Park, and his wife, Cho, told police they tied the children's arms and legs with stockings. All three died on February 2, the first around 2am, the second at 5am and the third at 7am, according to police in the town of Boseong, more than 186 miles (300 kilometers) south of Seoul.
The bodies were found nine days later by Park's brother-in-law. Police said the couple was praying in the hope of resurrecting the children. Their eight-month-old daughter who survived has been taken into care, police said.

Oh, that poor persecuted pastor.
Praise the Lord our God, for He hath shown us His strength and His grace. Amen and Hallelujah!
Fucking religion.
There is no humor at all in this situation. I have stated before that one fundamental all fundamentalists seem to have in common is keeping women down, but another, still more disturbing, is cruelty to children.
And fyi, the Christianity in South Korea, while it has some good spots, has unfortunately been far too influenced by the worst in American Christianity, namely the conspiracy theories, theocratic crap, and the "God wants you to be rich!" gospel. I live here, and umm, I can't tell you how many times I've seen street preachers here with the whole 666, veri-chip, anti-Christ conspiracy crap. You could find a hell of a lot on S. Korea for FSTDT XD
The second-worst thing about this is that the parents will insist that they have no idea what they did wrong.
The worst thing is that many people (well ok, fundies) will agree with them.
How the everloving fuck does someone become this fucking insane? Oh, what does it matter, people will probably demand that they be released for "religious freedom".
On that note, did they do the same to the baby? How did she survive that?
Let the punishment fit the crime - but it probably won't.
"The bodies were found nine days later by Park's brother-in-law. Police said the couple was praying in the hope of resurrecting the children."
And that's a clear example of the inmates running the asylum. THIS IS WHY superstition and magical thinking needs to be actively discouraged in spite of bleats of persecution to the contrary!
The next time Troll/Poe/Nuts4Life deigns to show her face round here again, I'm going to simply link this quote to the page she dares to emerge from under her bridge and molest more goats on.
As a prime example of why I have a more than infinite hatred of all religious Fundamental ists, why their so-called 'beliefs' can never justify their existence, and why fundies should never be allowed to breed , never mind vote or run for political office. As they are all worse than Al-Qaeda. Without Exception.* From Rush Limburger to Fred Phelps & the WBC. Q.E. and D.
And why the likes of her - and their unjustifiable 'beliefs' - are & always will be inferior to Quakers, Unitarian Universalists, Buddhists, Sufi Muslims, Wiccans et al. Non -fundie beliefs.

Those poor babies! Such an awful thing.
But this is not a case of "crazy religious people" this is a case of "nutjob fucking people"
Ordinary Christians don't do this kind of shit. I've raised 5 wonderful kids to adulthood without having to do insane shit like this. My kids aren't crazy fundies.
Sometimes I feel like, why bother opposing religion? As long as I can be an atheist in peace, I'm good. At times like that, I need to keep this story in mind.
I agree with Rational Me that this atrocity isn't the crime of Christians so much as the crime of crazy fundies. My family is Covenant Church Lutheran, and they are all completely rational and down-to-earth. Religion only becomes dangerous when it throws sanity out the window.
Hopefully this will encourage other Christian fundy Koreans to return to Buddhism before it's too late.
@Anon-e-moose
I agree 100%.
As a NeoPagan, this Korean couple, and Fundies in general, make me lose my lunch! Those poor, beautiful kids! I hope the surviving child recovers. I pray the deceased are at peace (though that last statement would be nonsensical to many, but that's my worldview. No offense). May you thrive in Paradise, children.

And all because the kids had a tummy ache due to too many Lunar New Year goodies! What kind of an idiot, fundy or otherwise, would blame an upset stomach on devils? These non-parents are evil & bonkers, pure and simple! What's wrong with some ginger tea & bedrest? And what's with the brutal, violent "exorcisms"?
I can see a ritual involving praying, chanting & "laying on hands" but starvation, drowning & beatings?! THE HELL?! Why all the violence? Methinks these weirdos are just sadists who use "exorcism" as an excuse to go physically postal on kids! Jesus didn't clobber the demoniacs!
This is f-cking disgusting. F-cking, f-cking digusting. Belief in divine/magical entities is and always has been an absolute scourge upon humanity. I cannot express just how much this disgusts me. I cannot express just how much hate of stupidity and superstition this instills in me. How many people have died and suffered because of this kind of sh-t? Granted, there are many perfectly sane religious folks. But when this kind of insanity exists...
This particular tidbit is nothing short of MURDER OF CHILDREN. Nothing. Less.
And they call ATHEISTS evil/depraved/immoral.
FOR. F-CK'S. SAKE!
We have science. We have the microscopes, the tissue samples, the experiments, and the methods that all prove that disease is caused by pathogens. How can you possibly grow to an adult, be exposed to all of this, and still believe in demonic possession?
Why . . . why is it that the three biggest religions always seem to attract the nutters? Just . . . seriously, what the fuck, do these people not realize what they did to their kids is seventy flavors of wrong?
You know what I hope? I hope this pair never wake up from their fundie delusions. Because if they do, they'll have to confront the enorminity of the evil that they have done. If they become even close to 'normal', the grief and guilt will drive them insane. There's enough misery and despair in this world, I don't wish for any more, even for these 'people'.
@Street Sharks
Religion, and all other forms of superstition and magical thinking, should be non-existent.
Making them illegal unfortunately is not effective. Education, in the long run, might be.
Anti-Theists like Robespierre & Street Sharks irritate me to no end! Anti-Theists are Atheist Fundamentalists. They are too stupid to make the distinction between good spirituality and bad spirituality. I am a Wiccan...I DO NOT WANT TO BE LUMPED WITH THIS DERANGED COUPLE, THE WESTBORO HATE CULT, THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, THE SBC, PAT ROBERTSON, TONY PERKINS, TEABAGGERS, RINOS, AL QUEDA, HAMAS, THE AYATOLLAHS, HEZZOBOLAH, THE TALIBAN, THE "SAFFRON" HINDUS, THE LRA OR OTHER RELIGIOUS PSYCHOS!!! I believe in Science, Reason, Logic, etc.
I BELIEVE IN THE FREEDOM TO BELIEVE OR NOT BELIEVE! TRUE FREEDOM! I RESPECT & HONOR ATHEISTS...I DO NOT RESPECT & HONOR ANTI-THEISTS! SO EAT CROW, FUNDIES...THEISTIC OR OTHERWISE!
Thank you.

Actually I don't rule out the existence of god (though I think that one who cares about us, whether good or evil, can be denied for sure). However, I do object to letting one's life - and how we influence other people's life - be based on fantasy.
Irrational thought is only as harmless and civilized as it is forced to be.
I'm sure most belivers are good people, but their harmless nonsense makes harmful nonsense more difficult to spot and stop.
@SpukiKitty
South Korea's official religions being Buddhism, Taoism and Korean Shamanism. North Korea's of course being the Cult of Personality of Kim Il-sung & Kim Jong-il*.
Not even in the latter, do believers in 'Juche ' do that to their own children.
And that's the difference.
Korean fundies. British fundies. American fundies. Six of one, half-a-dozen of the other.
Be seeing you. [/"The Prisoner"]
*- Kim Jong-un's has yet to develop.
Anon-e-Moose: That's IF Jong-Un fails to avoid his father's course. I'm hoping he'll instead endeavor to be Sejong Mk. II. Granted, not a very high probability, but I don't see any reason yet to believe that it's actually AT zero.
As to the situation...What's especially troublesome here (besides the obvious) is that this seems to be a clear case of prayer-as-sorcery. It is, however obliquely, forcing God to do work one can do by oneself. (Never mind you'd expect demons to be at work with something MUCH more baleful than upset stomachs...) I know I have a hard time seeing anything short of maltheism as blasphemous, but I wonder why Christian fundamentalists don't see this as coercing God in some way.
Out of curiosity, do we know what the brother-in-law's spiritual allegiance is--atheist, Buddhist, Christian, Taoist, shamanic, etc.?
Sure, they were just driving some demons out. Right. It's not like they were child abusers or anything.
I don't think you can blame religion for this kind of behavior, people are quite insane on their own.
Horrible!
The parents of a 14-year-old, and a pastor, are in custody in Sweden for torturing their daughter because they where convinced she was a witch.
Even in mostly non-religious Sweden, there are fundie assholes, who destroy children's lives.

Happily, she survived and is now living elsewhere. She's proud of herself for daring to tell someone about her life.
(after reading the first two pages of comments)
Felt like puking too upon reading the OP, but...
Methinks we need to ascertain one thing before unilaterally accusing faith. That is, which came first? Faith or insanity? Did pounding beliefs for a few years (the murderer is a pastor, after all) led to actually believing in them to that unhinged extent, or did a previously existing proclivity to psychosis found a cozy niche in religion?
We just don't know enough to tell at this point.
This being said, religion far too often is an enabler of batshit, but I'm not quite ready yet to brand it a cause of same.
Uh....while this sounds horrendous, the story as told here doesn't really ring true.
Humans don't starve to death in nine days.
Confused?
