Hmm some event could make these chips not only acceptable but desirable. They might control behaviour so that a former "believer" or "homophobe" appears to be "cured" of his or her "madness". May Jesus deliver us from this!

Well, since fundie Christians are pretty gung-ho on the idea of controlling the beliefs of others, and the liberal humanists pretty much want to let you think for yourself, I don't see why the findies aren't embracing this idea. Poof! Instant Believer! Cure for Homosexuality! Cure for Islam! One little brain chip and you can program everyone to be good little fundies just like you...
Oh please. If your side (and i shudder at the very thought of it) had access to this technology you'd do what the religions of the world have been trying to do for centuries; you'd make everyone a robot for god. You may fear it being used against you, but I'm sure you'd embrace it in a heartbeat if it was at your disposal.
Neophobe!may be used as some kind of weak thought control (perhaps by implanting memories of classical Pavlovian behavioural conditioning) but that doesn't make brain chips equal thought control.
By the same logic, you should stop using the internet immediately because it can be used to transmit virii.
the point that "if the fundies had access to this technology, they'd use it on all the non-believers" is sadly correct. That would make them hypocrites.

1st scientist: "Ok, Mr Inprayer, we'll just insert the chip into your skull, you may feel a small a moment of discomfort"
1st scientist: "There, that wasn't so bad was it? How do you feel?"
Inprayer: "Fine!"
1st scientist: " Not different in any way?"
