[On Dominique Venner, French man who shot himself in a Cathedral after the country legalized gay marriage]
Venner chose an effective, if questionable way to sacrifice his life for a greater cause: the awakening of the French electorate. What were his other weapons? He wrote books all his life. They had, it seems, no impact outside a small circle of conservative historians who read them.
"Did he consider the damage he was doing to his family?"
He did, he mentioned it in his note. Again, agree or disagree on the wisdom of it, his was a heroic act, intended as one and executed as one. Anyone who chooses heroism is bringing heartache to his family, in the same way, I think.

"Venner was a coward & a nut job. Nothing more."
And he doesn't sound very friendly either, despite his last name. ("Venner" means "friends" in Norwegian.)
Strange that annalex ignores Venner's six decades of work in far right politics. Evidently, Venner's activity in the OAS (which attempted a coup in France in 1962), his sympathy for fascist Vichy France and his part in laying the foundations of the modern far right in France did not succeed in "awakening the French electorate." Strange also that she defends a man from whom the anti-gay movement in France has distanced itself.
Did he awaken the French electorate? Doubtful, since they're not likely to repeal gay marriage.
How heroic is it to kill yourself so you don't have to live in a world where gay people have the same rights as everyone else?
Again, agree or disagree on the wisdom of it, his was a heroic act, intended as one and executed as one.
You're making an excellent case for the canonization of Budd Dwyer.
Very melodramatic, Venner. I feel sorry for the poor underpaid cleaners of Notre Dame who have to mop up your drama queen blood.
It wasn't heroic, but insufferably selfish and ostentatious, like something from a bad play.
@Hasan Prishtina
"..the OAS (which attempted a coup in France in 1962),.."
You forgot the part where they were setting bombs to blow up the civilians they swore, as militarymen, to protect, and were attempting to kill De Gaulle (in one instance a machine gun was employed, endangering not only the head of state but also his wife and an unrelated family).
"..his part in laying the foundations of the modern far right in France.."
In fact, in 1972, he was, with Jean-Marie Le Pen, one of the candidates to the post of chairman of the Front National .
Yeah, one less far-richtist; the only guys I feel bad for are the poor fellows who had to clean the blood after.
Isn't suicide a mortal sin in Catholicism? So this guy, according to his belief, just sent himself to Hell for no good reason. Way to go, attempted self-martyr.
sacrifice his life for a greater cause: the awakening of the French electorate.
Well, that kind of backfired, didn't it?
The French electorate is still sound asleep, and the majority of those who are awake approve gay marriage.
Better luck next time.
A senile old fascist gets so butthurt about the world growing a bit less unfair that he up and becomes an hero? As an actual member of said French electorate, my reaction oscillates between "took him long enough..." and "too bad he was already terminal and this was just his last trolling attempt. Imagine if we could weaponize fairness to induce the same reaction in all Reich Wingers..." And despite the 4chan lingo, there is nothing particularly heroic about offing yourself.
Wonder if ex-anal here knows that Venner wasn't a Xian. And despite claiming to respect Notre-Dame, he did profanate it with his blood (and piss and shit, unless he had the foresight to wear a diaper). Oh well, at least he didn't disrupt thousand of working people's day by jumping in front of a train, but I still feel sorry for the janitor and the restorers who may have to clean works of arts splashed with his blood.
Oh, so suicide is super-terrible, and everyone who commits it is going to Hell, but when a guy does it because he doesn't like that gay people have rights, he's considered a hero?
Your double standards sicken me to the core. The fact that you are making exceptions to your faith's rules to accommodate a cowardly bigot shows that you are not loyal to your faith, but that you only use it to make yourself feel that you are better than other people, and as an attempt to justify your hatred.
Heroic?
The guy was having a tantrum, he just took it waaayy further than most fundies would.
His death is just pathetic really.
~qaz~.
"agree or disagree on the wisdom of it"
He was a stupid cunt who basically Attention Whored himself in the ultimate way.
'Look at me! Look at meeeee-'
KA-BLAMMO!
Next question, analex.
@ragey
If I were so low as to want to kill myself, I'd do so in an out of the way area, well away from other people - in private - to ensure nobody else was hurt/killed in the process.
That's moral.
Being a complete Nucking Futs cuntbrain of an Attention Whore (Look at me! Look at meeeee!') and with a gun ...?!
Is that moral? You. Tell . Me.
...besides, I wouldn't want to kill myself - in private or in public - anyway; I like being alive, and want to be for as long as naturally possible. And there are perfectly good alternatives in making a public statement that ensures you keep being alive.
Can you say 'Protest' and 'Peaceful Civil Disobedience'? Rosa Parks did.
So...he left his children without a father, his wife without a husband, no doubt screwed them out of life insurance because I'm fairly certain it's null and void in self inflicted death. Not to mention the people who went to that cathedral to pray, possibly with small children, only to find his lifeless corpse. But boy howdy, the world knows that he doesn't want the gays to marry.
What a guy.
[EDIT]
@ Ragey, I'm sorry, but I have little respect for suicide at the best of times. It is a senseless act of selfishness that, in a fit of "freeing yourself of pain" inflicts that pain magnified many times over on the people around you. And I say this as someone who contemplated suicide myself. And this scuzzball just committed suicide out of spite, again, with no regard to what he would do to the people who care about him. He is low, and he offed himself in the most cowardly, childish manner. So if that compromises my morals, so be it, but in my eyes, he is worth nothing but scorn.
You know, you could try not being dicks to suicidal people. Oh, but you're too ~edgy~ to not be assholes. And saying"it's selfish", yeah, make people who are already feeling horrible about themselves feel worse. That makes sense. Idiots.
Confused?
