Many times as a child I remember standing at Dad’s side when he would go into a gas station to prepay fuel. If the station carried pornography, Dad would scrape his money back off of the counter and tell the cashier that he could not buy gas there because he just noticed they promoted rape and child molestation. The cashier would look shocked, and Dad would point at the porn magazines behind him. The cashier ALWAYS looked guilty and ashamed. He would glance at us kids; we would all be looking at him with suspicious shock (are you a child molester???) before we turned and walked out.

Prick. The cashiers probably didn't have any say as to what magazines they carried. And way to stick that strawman up their ass while you're at it.
I wouldn't have minded. Plenty of other people out there who would want the gas. And the porn.
What happens if he already got the fuel? Or did he specifically always use prepay just to check for porn mags? (I'm sure he was very thorough in his perusal.)
Anyway, if this is acceptable I guess I get to go into gas stations and tell the cashiers they're immoral for selling hot dogs and beef jerky.
Well, you embarrassed the attendants and made yourself feel important and powerful, but you actually didn't accomplish very much because the attendants don't order the magazines. If you're going to try to cause problems, complain to the store manager.
Better yet, mind your own business.
I think you are mistaking the perceived expression of guilt and shame for the real expression of them thinking "What the fuck is this nutter on about?"
The brow creases a bit in both, so it's a mite understandable, but you've got to watch for the raising of one eyebrow to easily tell the difference.
A cashier is generally an employee with no say whatsoever over the merchandise carried in the store.
Beyond that, you were raised by a crackpot who taught you to behave the same way.
When I was a kid, I wasn't very aware of child molestation. I knew not to talk to strangers and how to respect others. I don't get how a parent can raise a child to stare at strangers and think them to be a child molester. Isn't that something like fear mongering? Making a child so paranoid, judgmental and scared?
Apparently, your parents stopped at nothing in their abhorrent behavior while raising kids.
I doubt the cashier was really guilty or ashamed, or believed they were supporting child molestation. They probably had stress showing on their faces because they were really thinking "Oh no, some religious asswipe! Why can't these people just keep their kooky beliefs to themselves? What's he going to do next? Does he have a gun? He shouldn't be allowed to brainwash those poor kids!"
Your dad was an embarassing, bombastic asshole too, eh?
Oh, well...You can't pick'em--you're stuck with the one gawd gived you. With counseling you can overcome.
If porn automatically magazines promotes rape and child molestation, I suppose churches, then, automatically promote fundamentalism and religious terrorism? I mean, since we're committing logical Suicide By Slippery Slope?
Face it, pal - every gas station has carried Playboy since 1962 or so.
Also, "child molestation"? Out of the numbers of porn-watchers and fundies who molest children, there are probably more fundies.
So, a cashier, most likely working for a pitiful wage, has to put up with your father's self-righteous godbag shit over something s/he has little or no control over. All because the manager or stock controller likes to have pornified images of women - yes, women, not fucking children - on display where minors can see it (when that is wrong in itself), it does not mean the clerk has to take the shit for it. Don't like it? Complain to the damn manager. Complain to the publishers of the magazines. Just DO NOT give some poor gas station attendant the heat for something that is not their fault.
I'll bet it was just an excuse for your dad to look at the dirty magazines. Gah. Fundies and pornography. Pornography and fundies. I hate them both.
Yeah cause the cashier at the gas station decides what items the store sells? This is someone who is working at an already-stressful job for a living, and you think harrassing them and making false accusations is something to be proud of? I understand you were children and your dad was the asshole here, but if you don't see how messed up it was now that you're grown and should know better, then you're a moron. And I'm sure you're teaching your own brats to do this kind of shit too. ARRGGHH you people piss me off.
Bet your Dad felt like a real big man, picking on someone making minimum wage, making an ass of him, not-so-subtly accusing him of being a child molester for being in the mere presence of porn, and not really putting himself at any risk, because if he fought back against his sanctimonious ass, he'd go simpering to the manager, citing abuse so fast it wouldn't even be funny.
I'm surprised they managed to find a gas station they could purchase from in clear "conscience". Don't they all sell beer & wine as well as skin mags?
And now these children are using the internet?
SCOTTY! EMERGENCY POWER TO THE IRONY DEFLECTORS!
As a former petrol station attendant I can safely say the "guilt and shame" you refer to was in fact a struggle to restrain themself from leaping over the counter and biting your father on the throat.
Those long weekend evening shifts... Christ, how they haunt me...
For one thing, no gas station sells child porn/child molestation magazines. Can the word 'illegal' sink into that cemented brain of yours?
Adult magazines are for adults. And I doubt the station attendant was ashamed; more like worried this rabid fundie was going to pull a shot gun out and go all self righteous in the place.
Ok... show of hands... who the hell had to "prepay" for their gas years ago?
I 've 40... until a couple of years ago, I'd NEVER seen prepay.
Let's just hope you never break down in the middle of nowhere, and the only petrol station around has a stack of nudie books, leaving you unable to buy petrol and stuck out there.
In fact, no. Let's hope that happens. Maybe you'd learn something from it. About pride and all that.
Umm the cashier is generally near the bottom of the chain-of-command and probably has minimal input at best as to the contents of the magazine rack.
I imagine most petrol stations in the US sell porn and auto mags like they do over here, and your dad's car was running on fumes a lot.
Child molesters probably don't buy adult porn either.
Your dad is/was an arsehole.
"The cashier ALWAYS looked guilty and ashamed. "
Um, no. That look is called, "What the bloody FUCK are you smoking, mister? O_o"
That's pretty messed up that a father would make his children believe that anyone who looked at/sold porn was promoting rape and might be a child molester. Seriously, WTF? Of course the cashier would be shocked that a guy would come into a gas station and say that infront of his own kids.
Oh, wow. These are the kids of Mr. Pearl? That explains everything. Crazy deluded nut-job makes more crazy deluded nut-jobs... He really should have gotten a good kick to the sac.
I'm SURE that the cashier looked ashamed. Couldn't have ever been surprise at such an inane statement, disgust that you would be so self-righteous and judgmental, concern that you, in fact, may be mentally ill? Because all of those are also appropriate responses.
Beka and gay,
You ha e to understand that those models were adults.
It is.not like when your daddy put that thing in your mourh.
It would have been very sweet, though, to see him pushing his car...check that... probably had the kids pushing the car, back to the station when they ran out of gas.
I would have been there in the doorway, waving the porno mag with a big smile on my face.
Reminds me of the thread on the old Teens-4-Christ where Bro. Randy tried to convince everyone he only fueled his car up at a gas station that refused to sell porn, beer, cigarettes and lottery tickets. Do those even exist?
Your dad, Michael Pearl, was a bloviating douchebag; and you, madam, are a complete idiot for choosing to follow in his footsteps.
thats horrendous!!! both myself and my wife look at porn, and we're not rapists or kiddie fiddlers, what a total retard. it makes me wonder did he then drive off with a full tank of fuel without paying for itbecause of "pornography" what a tosser
...and tell the cashier that he could not buy gas there because he just noticed they promoted rape and child molestation. The cashier would look shocked, and Dad would point at the porn magazines behind him.
Probably because he was thinking "Um, how do pictures of men and women in states of undress, taken willingly, promote child pornography?" Maybe he looked guilty and ashamed because there was nothing he could say that would have earned back his money? That's how I would have felt, and have felt, when I worked as a cashier at a major retail chain* and the customer was so upset about something they said they would never shop there again.
*Not Wal-mart, thankfully. :)
Your dad allowed you to enter porn-selling shops?
As far as the cashier is concerned, he/she is doing a job and is not responsible for your father's children. I doubt very much if your dad's protest broke any filling station to the point of bankruptcy.
But actually, I really don't believe your little tale. I see it as lying for Jesus.
Don't take it out on the employee. You think it's such a great stride for your god, but in the end, all you've done is piss off one lowly minimum wage worker.
Asses who cover up the porn in bookstores with other magazines are just as futile: someone has to go and uncover it, and it's not going to be the person whose decision it was to carry porn originally, it's going to be some poor young person who just wanted to get a job to help pay for college and would rather not deal with religious shenanigans. There are ways to disagree with a business, but making the employee feel like shit or adding to his or her work are not them.
Patches , thank you so much for that link!
Like I said, I've worked in retail, and I've dealt with a few irritating people...though, admittedly, none as irritating as Mr. Pearl!
Speaking as a cashier at a gas station, we have no say whatsoever in what is stocked.
And porn does not always equal child molestation.
I'd hazard a guess that very few child molesters are interested in pics of naked adult women. Furthermore, I've bought quite a few porn mags in my time and never felt in the slightest bit inclined to rape anyone.
I would say please come and live in South Africa, where we still have petrol pump jockeys and pay them directly without having to enter the store, but I'd really prefer it if you don't. We have enough assorted crazies of our own already.
First off promoting rape and child molestation? Read your fucking Bible and not to mention Josh Duggar. So yeah fuck you and your dad on that end.
Second you do know Cashiers have no say in what is sold right? Basically your dad was an asshole for nothing
Don't Michael and Debbi Pearl run No Greater Joy? And they are kind of known for abusing children. So really about the whole rape and child molestation, along with Josh Duggar and others, clear out your own closet before attacking others. Also the cashier had no say in what was carried in the store.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
