The Vatican struck back Friday at a U.N. human rights committee that issued a scathing report on sex abuse by priests, accusing it of straying beyond its mandate and discrediting the U.N. as a whole by adopting the "prejudiced" positions of anti-Catholic advocacy groups.
The Vatican said the U.N. committee had ignored both the Holy See's unique status and its efforts to address the abuse crisis in recent years, noting that it had provided this information to the committee in writing and in person. It blasted what it called the "absolutely anomalous" publicity the committee gave its report and promised a full response at a later date...
Specifically, he accused the committee of giving more credence to the positions of "well-known NGOs, prejudiced against the Catholic Church and the Holy See" than the Vatican itself. In ignoring the Vatican's own explanations and data, he said, it appeared the committee had written the report before the Vatican made its case at a daylong hearing last month.
He said while it was wrong to blame the United Nations as a whole for the committee's "grave shortcomings," the organization itself "bears the negative consequences of what was done by one of its committees, beyond its competence."

If you're so concerned about the NGOs, you should have done a better job not letting things get this far. Of course, in the Catholic church that means supressing the truth so it won't come out. So these anti-Catholic organizations have very valids points. Your 'unique status' does not put you above the law like you like to believe.
"You can't thumb your nose at the whole organization just because of a few people. You should ALL be ashamed of yourselves for what the committee did."
To be a pope requires an unparalleled ability to unconsciously embrace hypocrisy. That's why it can easily take days to choose a new one: an individual unequal to the task might one day say "wait a minute... what the FUCK did I just say" and tear the whole institution down.
So the Church got around to making some minor efforts recently, most of which consisted of shielding the Church from any sort of punishment; and most NGOs are upset by child rape.
Wow. Maybe they should change their name to "Holy Can't-See."
Whenever I hear the Catholic church talking about its efforts to address the sex abuse issue, it reminds me of a Monty Python sketch where the Navy Captain was talking about accusations of cannibalism in the Navy. "There is no cannibalism in the Navy. And when I say 'none,' I mean there is some, more than I'm willing to admit. But all new ratings are warned that if they wake up with tooth marks anywhere on their body, to report it to me so I can take every measure to hush the whole thing up."

But you shouldn't blame the Catholic church as a whole when some of its priests molest children and bishops cover the whole thing up. Gotcha.
OHP FTW.
"Unique status." Sounds like special pleading to me. Surprise, coming from Mother Church.
"Beyond its competence" kind of sums up the whole alleged mouthpiece for God thing you guys have going on. I guess it takes one to know one.
The Vatican said the U.N. committee had ignored both the Holy See's unique status...
As the inhabitants of the Vatican are at best honestly delusional but much more likely frauds and charlatans ignoring their supposed 'status' is exactly what the UN should be doing.
To be fair to the RCC: I think that report strayed a bit off topic when it urged the church to change its views on abortion, birth control, and homosexuality. Everybody knows that's going to happen and I think that the curia's mouthpiece was reacting to that.
Maybe the Vatican would have a bit more credibility, if they hadn't been busy raping children, covering up the raping of children by priests, lying about all the child rape, threatening the victims of child rape and their families with excommunication, telling the victims of child rape to not tell anything to the secular authorities, blaming the victims of child rape, etc.
Such activities are rather frowned upon, and a few token 'efforts' aren't going to get you into the good graces of anyone.
Electing a new PR-guy/pope in an effort to polish up your tarnished image also isn't helping stopping all the abuse.
Now, the next thing I want to hear from the Vatican is as follows:
Anyone in the catholic church accused of child abuse will be handed over to the secular authorities. If found guilty in a court of law, the abuser will be immediately and automatically excommunicated and defrocked, with no hope of ever rejoining the catholic church in any way.
To be fair the Holy See does indeed have a unique status at the UN, in that the See is the representation of a single person in the last remaining absolute monarchy on the planet, one that is essentially stateless at that. Since the Catholic Church is the only one of the major religions without a territorial basis and with a guy in charge, the See has a seat at the table. The only other instance in which a similar situation were to occur would be if the Dalai Lama was given UN representation as well, but the complications arising from the Tibet Question would make that impossible.
Now back to bashing kiddy-diddling priests.
tbf, amnesty international has a pretty well-known axe to grind against the vatican since catholics stopped giving them funds, and it's amnesty that issued a recent report condemning the current church for child abuse while only including historical cases that have actually been addressed, which does look axe-grindy.
especially when you compare it to their lack of reporting or uncovering of pretty much any other child abuse scandals
So, Catholic church should be allowed to abuse people sexually because they are the Catholic church?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Oh wait, you're serious. Let me laugh even harder.
