"preposterous and toxic "pray away the gay" programs."
Why are you so intolerant of those who become straight? You have made a statement which qualifies as hate speech and yet you think you take the high road. Your post shows intolerant Bibliophobic anti-civil rights politics.
Your hate-speech intolerance is what is toxic.

50 bucks says Daniel Paul is straight. another 50 says he's never bothered looking up the founders of EXODUS international *the leader in pray the gay away* and see how succesful they think it was. Of course this idiot will probably just ignore it, just like he ignored the mountains of medical studies saying homosexuality was normal and unchangeable in favor of some church literature supporting his bigotry.
/Why are you so intolerant of those who become straight?/
We're not intolerant of them, we just can't stand the hateful institutions that people like you have set up in order to brainwash them into becoming something they're not.
/You have made a statement which qualifies as hate speech and yet you think you take the high road./
Saying that something doesn't work is hate speech? Give me a break.
/Your post shows intolerant Bibliophobic/
That is not a word.
/anti-civil rights politics./
As opposed to you people, who tell homosexuals day in and day out, "You're sinful, horrible abominations! You must repent of your sin and if you don't, then you're just being lazy or defiant towards God's will!" and pressure them into being something they're not. Cry me a river, you hypocritical whiner.

Mirror, mirror on the wall...
I'd rather hate the bible than to love it so much that I'd want to fuck it. At least, that's the way fundies make it sound. And it's funny, a fundy bitching about supposed "hate-speech". That's what we call IRONY.
I'm guessing people like Daniel Paul think they're cleverly capturing the civil rights/oppressed minority flag here. However, a couple often-used graphics here (the pie chart, the illustrations of oppressed people v. a megachurch congregation) quickly put the lie to that. At least nobody is asking Daniel Paul to change who he is at the core or expect to be treated as a second-class citizen (at best). They just want him to mind his own onions.
Then again, "repressed busybody who wants everyone else to be miserable" may describe what DP and other fundies are at the core.
Yes, Daniel Paul, we should all be intolerant of hate speech. Now, what was that you were saying about those silly and ignorant "pray away the gay" programs?
Firstly - he was intolerant of the programs, not the participants. If he's intolerant of any group of people, it'd be the organisers/
Secondly - "hate-speech intolerance" - 'nuff said.
because
CUNT
they don't become straight; they suppress their homosexuality.
And GreenEyedLilo: lovey, take some time away from the homophobic sites, it's not good for your blood pressure xx
Stating this has not worked is simply the truth. It has not worked, it will never work, and you can pray 'til the cows come home. At the end of the day, they are still gay, and you are still delusional.
@889056: "/Your post shows intolerant Bibliophobic/
That is not a word. "
Well, technically:
Bibliophobe (n.): a person who hates, fears, or distrusts books.
Bibliophobia (n.): A dread of books.
So "bibliophobic" should be valid, though it doesn't mean what Daniel Paul obviously thinks it means (fear of the Bible).
Still, dictionary.com redirected me to the above words and "bibliophilic," and didn't acknowledge "bibliophobic," so... *shrug*
anyone think of that south park episode when butters gets sent to the "gay camp" when daniel paul says 'pray away the gay programs'?
@a mind far far away
they probably have some pretty nasty paper cuts because of fucking it too much
Because 'becoming straight' is a lie. One doesn't 'turn gay', and one doesn't 'become straight'. You can get a homosexual to live a lie through browbeating and threatening him/her with eternal torment and being disowned by family, or remain celibate, but that doesn't change his/her sexuality.

...pass the pipe, plz!
Here's what the American Psychiatric Association has to say about "pray away the gay" programs.
"The potential risks of 'reparative therapy' are great, including depression, anxiety and self-destructive behavior, since therapist alignment with societal prejudices against homosexuality may reinforce self-hatred already experienced by the patient."
"Many patients who have undergone 'reparative therapy' relate that they were inaccurately told that homosexuals are lonely, unhappy individuals who never achieve acceptance or satisfaction."
"The possibility that the person might achieve happiness and satisfying interpersonal relationships as a gay man or lesbian is not presented, nor are alternative approaches to dealing with the effects of societal stigmatization discussed."
"Therefore, the American Psychiatric Association opposes any psychiatric treatment, such as 'reparative' or 'conversion' therapy which is based upon the assumption that homosexuality per se is a mental disorder or based upon a prior assumption that the patient should change his/her homosexual orientation. The American Psychiatric Association recognizes that in the course of ongoing psychiatric treatment, there may be appropriate clinical indications for attempting to change sexual behaviors."

It's the pot calling kettle black. Flame war ahoy, sailor!
aaa , it's the pot calling the stainless steel kettle black.
In fairness, I have no doubt that there are many people who have changed their sexual self-identification over the years - and that means either way, from gay to straight and other way round. In fact I've met quite a few of them over the course of my life, and have spent New Year's Eve in the company of my (gay) mate, his beautiful ex-wife and his two awesome kids.
And as long as that change of heart is done freely and without coercion there's nothing wrong with it. In fact it just goes to show that human sexuality is a continuum rather than a black and white either/or affair. But what's wrong about those "pray away the gay" programs is that they get humans as their most vulnerable, i.e. when they are unsure about their sexuality, and send them on a massive guilt trip that fucks up their minds even worse.
Hmmm..... my post didn't show up yesterday. :\
Anyway, I was wondering how many of Exodus' success stories, involve marriages of convenience. Or couples that met there that have special arrangements.
Bury them further into the closet, maybe they'll find Narnia.
“Why are you so intolerant of those who become straight?”
because they don’t.
Being gay isn’t a choice, changing that is not something you can choose. I couldn’t even switch between being a boob man and an ass man.
“You have made a statement which qualifies as hate speech and yet you think you take the high road.”
No. It’snot hate speech to hold you (or anyone) responsible for the choices they make.
Klansmen saying blacks are inferior is hate speech.
Blacks saying the Klan is racist is not
"Your post shows intolerant Bibliophobic anti-civil rights politics.”
I would not give two fucks about someone saying they’ve changed from gay to straight EXCEPT that other fuckknucles will point to them and say ‘HE did you, now you should be forced to.’
And it’s not about the Bible, since you guys aren’t equally upset about mixed fabrics, spare ribs, or teh Sabbath being on Saturday. You’re just using it as a justification.
“Your hate-speech intolerance is what is toxic.”
Yeah, i haven’t played ’I’m rubber you’re glue’ since 4th grade.
Confused?
