you said it roger. Call me a bigot but I think that was just silly for her to have to reveal that about albus. I mean she could have at least left it to the imagination. if you want to be gay whatever, thats your concern, but dont’ write someting like that in a childrens book. Thats like encouraging kids to be gay, which is wrong in my opinion.

I still don't know how it's possible to encourage or convince someone to be gay. It's just so far out and removed from actual reality that I am completely stopped in my tracks every time I read something like that.

Actually I wish she hadn't done that myself, but that is a critical, not an editorial opinion. I prefer the characters in a book to have a bit more mystery and kind of like to make up their pasts out of my own imagination.
It wasn't in the book, unless you read between the lines, as it is meant to be. Not hard to figure it out if you can look into Dumbledore's actions and attitudes in the 7th book, but it's not explicit.

1. She said he was gay in response to audience members asking if he'd ever loved anyone.
2. It's never mentioned in the books. And no, it's not encouraging them to be gay. Dumbledore didn't go around telling students how awesome cock is.

I heard JK Rowling said that she thought of Dumbledore as gay, not that he definately was or wasn't. Just her take on it. And she NEVER said it in the books.
And the wand jokes were always there.
She did actually confirm that Dumbledore was gay and in love with another wizard. It is a shame she couldn't/didn't actually mention it in the books. It shouldn't be a big deal...
Now the fundies who hated the books already are going to harp on how Harry Potter supports witchcraft, satanism, and 'the gay agenda.'
seeing as the final book has been out for some time and she /just/ made this announcement, I can't see how it affects the books. Sure in retrospect you can draw whatever conclusions you like, but it doesn't actually change the text itself that makes absolutely no explicit mention of Dumbledore having any sexuality at all!
What's ironic is that these are the very idiots who have been defending the Potter series from detractors claiming it's witchcraft and an abomination.
Blam! Once a character is gay, suddenly they "see the light". I hate to tell you guys this, but the Bible says "thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" in there too. More cherries, anyone?

The characters are products of the writer's imagination. If it made sense in the larger context for a certain character to possess certain characteristics, then what's the problem?

You are a bigot. It was never explictly stated in the seventh book that Albus and Gellert had a relationship. It was clearly stated that they used to be friends, and then enemies, but it was never stated point-blank that they were once a couple. No one is encouraging kids to be gay. YOU are encouraging kids to be narrow-minded, homophobic jerks.

I was vaguely annoyed by that reveal because it was not implied in the slightest in the actual text and it struck me as JK wanting to gain acolades for a token (sexual) minority, and since Dumbledore had never shown any sexual interest, it wouldn't contradict anything.
The books were written over time, and so as the series went along, they were written for an older audience. The last book in which this event occurs was targeted at older teenagers, not itty bitty children like you think.
Oh yeah, Dumbly is gay, I soooooo want to be just like him ...
Stop being stupid, just because a character is gay doesn't make the children to be the same, and even if they did want it, who cares? What matters is that the children are happy.
She didn't write it in a children's' book, stupid. She said that in an interview.
I'd rather be as intelligent as Dumbledore is, than as gay as he is.
