I was just thinking what if the image of the beast is just another word for TV? If John would have seen this in his vision it would have been like a "picture" come alive an image. Now think about this everybody is forced to go digital. How else could everybody be forced to worship the beasts image unless they were all in the same place at the same time? Well with TV this becomes possible. What if with this digital switch they can monitor when your TV is on and what you are watching? If your not infront of your TV with tuned to the beast network at 7pm and "worshipping" his image they come to your house and kill you...

I was reading through the thread. The amount of misinformation about the digital conversion in the Bible Belt where most of this fundie nonsense originates is astounding. The TV stations should have just done it like they did with the conversion from AM to FM: one by one, they went off the air on AM and went to FM and let people figure it out for themselves that they needed FM radios to get their favorite shows. For a brief period, they sold FM converters mainly for AM car radios, but eventually cars all had FM, and now the converters are only sold through restorer catalogs for people with pre-1975 antique cars who want to keep their in-dash factory AM radios. I predict 10 years from now the only people with digital converters will be antique TV restorers.

It just proves the old saying: no good deed goes unpunished.

If I'm reading the whole fundy doctrine right then I can safely draw these conclusions.

1. In fundie land only one sect goes to heaven
2. They assume they are part of that sect
3. Suicide is a ticket to hell either way
4. They don't give a shit about living, it's all about heaven

Knowing these I'm surprised the fundies aren't begging people to kill them so they can go be with their precious jebus up in fluffy cloud heaven.

For that matter why doesn't one member bite the bullet and murder all the others. They all go to heaven, he accepts Jesus and repents in prison and they execute him.

The whole sect goes to heaven and they don't have to be afraid of teh scary atheists anymore.

I find it shocking that anyone is this ignorant about today's technology. How come they're using the computer? It must be connected to Satan somehow... no? What's even more shocking is the fact that they say "I was thinking". They wouldn't know what a real thought was if it bit them in the butt!.

It's too bad "The Rapture" is just a fairy tale. The world would be so much better off without these idiots. Just imagine! A world without such bigoted, fearful, angry, small-minded, self righteous, hate mongering world-haters, would be so much better. If they don't care about the earth, why don't they leave? Jesus isn't coming to carry them off, not now, not soon, not ever!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA The conspiracy theories in that thread are awesome. Notice how someone who actually works in the field of repairing digital cable boxes assures them that there is no spying going on and it goes completely ignored.

Of course, the "herd mentality" is frightening on RR. People are all like, "I kinda like my digital cable" and here come the tinfoil hat wearing freaks with their subliminal message/Illuminati spies/mark of the beast theories and all of a sudden everyone jumps on the tinfoil hat bandwagon. "Wow, I never thought of that before. Maybe you're right. I'm going to send my cable box back tomorrow!"

If people can be that persuasive over the internet they are, most likely, a danger to society. Stop wasting precious space, Crapture Creeps!

*facepalm* End of the World... and digital TV??? Fundie stuff is weird enough, but when they bring in technology, it gets even weirder.

We here in Finland already went digital and we did not immanentise the Eschaton by doing so. All it did was get clearer reception and more channels. (Well, most of the time. When stuff is broken, it's really broken and you can't see a damn thing.)

And last I checked, DVB, ATSC and other DTV standards still do not do return paths unless specifically implemented in the viewer's end (e.g. you have set top box connected to the Internet). If you just have aerial cable, you will get stuff in, but you still won't get stuff out. It's all based on the old television infrastructure we've had in place for decades.

Even rudimentary knowledge of technology would tell you that there's some big problems ahead if your set-top box would suddenly become a transmitter, especially if the idea would be to send viewer data clandestinely. One of the basic properties of radiowaves is that you can't just tell someone to go listen to another band; if someone actively transmits something, it can be detected. I mean, it'd be darn easy to just tune in to the radio frequencies the thing uses and see that the thing is transmitting something (doesn't matter that it's likely encrypted, it's the presence of such transmission that's incriminating). Especially when we technophiles who could figure this out just effing hate it when some corporation wants to screw the public and compile marketing data without anyone knowing. Some Demands would be raised. Questions would be asked.

Digital TV standards are all open standards which are available for free (disclaimer: just reading what the sites say, I didn't feel like downloading them); go ahead and get a copy and see for yourself. If you actually go and implement these, then you probably need to pay for licenses and stuff. But still, open standards.

Business as usual over at RR, I see. And by "business" I, of course, mean "mass hysteria borne of self-reinforcing delusions and staggering, willful ignorance."

It's actually an intriguing psychological situation - what does one do when one's entire worldview both prevents one from seeking, gaining or applying the knowledge and techniques necessary to comprehend and engage with the modern, scientfic and technological world we live in, and simultaneously gives one the unshakable belief that one is, in fact, fully equipped to deal with anything the world can serve up? The result, in this case, seems to be furious, hopelessly wild guesswork against a background of terrified bewilderment; the guesses being so crazily unrestrained because the guesser simply cannot conceive that they might not have the answer or the ability to develop it, let alone that it might be possible for questions to exist that are simply unanswerable, either by over or under definition, or just being plain nonsensical.
